Hi
we're going on the May 6th 3day wonder....We are bringing my 72 yo mother with us...here's the problem.

Her Birth Certificate has her name as Marie Irene Beaudette.

Her Drivers License has her name as Irene Y Harris

Dreams Unlimited contacted DCL and they said to have her cruise documents call out Marie Irene Harris, this will match her birth Certificate. they stated that it is not uncommon for people to use their middle name as their first name.

do you think they will question the "Y" that she has in her middle name on her drivers liscense? She does not use Marie at all...the "Y" is for Yvonne (her mothers name)?

Thanks for your help

Kyle

I would call also. My mother was from Ireland, and when she named me my first name is a family name, that you don't use, instead my middle name is my known name.
When I booked my trip I explained this and they wanted my name EXACTLY HOW IT APPEARS ON MY PASSPORT, OR BC. Now all my docs have me listed by legal first name that I never use.

Since the guest is using a birth certificate and driver's license, the first name and middle initial should be as it appears on the BC. If the last name is different because of a marriage, then the last name should be as it is on the drivers license.

Just make sure that you call your travel agent to make any name change because DCL will not be able to do it for you directly because of the contract with all travel agencies.

It will be okay if the middle initial on the drivers license matches the last name on the birth certificate, right? I use my maiden name as my middle initial and have since marriage. I have absolutely nothing with my first name, actual birth middle initial and married last name on it...does that make any sense???

When we crusied on Carnival 5/03, both my sisters presented their BC and a copy of their marriage license and boarded with no trouble. We were told that they needed the ML to show the last name change.

Are you saying that I need both my birth certificate AND my marriage license if I am married?

Well, it certainly would be prudent to have a copy of your marriage license, given the discrepancy. However, this situation just illustrates why it is important to have a passport. For the purpose of international travel, your birth certificate and driver's license have no legal significance whatsoever. None. Other countries agree to accept them to make it more convenient for tourists, but the verifiability of a passport is unmatched. With a passport, you just show it at check-in, and you're done. To me, it simply isn't worth the hassle and risk of the "easy" birth certificate method. Especially if you've got more than six weeks till departure, go to http://travel.state.gov/passport_easy.html and find your nearest passport facility.

I would get her a passport. Since you have documents in hand already, you should be able to expedite the passport and you can easily have it in time for your trip. This will elimiante any question of an identity crisis while traveling. Good luck and have a good trip.

Hi

Thanks to all that responded...I spoke to the immigration department today and they said that everything is fine.
