This may be a stupid question but does it matter when your birth certificate was issued as long as it is certified? I had my certified birth certificate issued to me in 1994 before I went to Jamaica, however, someone told me that they thought a certified birth certificate was only good for 10 years and then had to be reissued, is this true? Also, could you believe it cost $61.00 to obtain a certified birth certificate for my husband from Boston. Of course, that price included fed ex but I thought it was alittle expensive. I guess it is worth it in the end for the Disney Cruise........ Thanks, Jeneen

Passports are normally ten years. I always thought birth certificates as long as they were certified were good for your life time. IE the one I have from the hospital I have is certified and is a legal birth certificate. Shouldn't matter when its issued. I'd be really surprised if you have to get a new one!

State certificates of birth don't expire ... but passports do after 10 years.

And I'm guessing you got the birth certificate thru a *retrieval company* ... much cheaper to go directly to the source ... usually the state's department or division of vital records ... you can do a google search for the web addy.

Here's the website for MA birth records:

http://www.mass.gov/dph/bhsre/rvr/vrcopies.htm

Cost is $18 per certified copy

Birth Certificates do not expire. I will be using one issued April, 1953 for my Magic cruise come Saturday.

I have been using my original birth certificate for years -- and it is over 40 years old! So no, they don't expire, just wear out.

I was gonna say that. Only expire when you do....

My 4 year old daughter and I were both born in Boston. I went to Boston city hall two weeks ago and got our birth certifiicates for $8 each - they are certified with a raised sail. The yummy part was the ice cream festival right outside on city hall plaza.

Unfortunately, we live in New Jersey and had to request the Birth Certificate for my husband over the internet and have it express shipped since we leave in two weeks. I am glad that you were able to go to City Hall to get your birth certificates, it makes things so much easier........ Thanks, Jeneen

Anlashokna...Silly question but you said...

IE the one I have from the hospital I have is certified and is a legal birth certificate.

Are you sure the hospital bc you have is "certified"? As far as I was aware hospital bc are just that...hospital certificates...and not a certified copy of your bc. They are like you said good for life....legal....and usable with just about everything a person would need throughout life...except leaving the country.

I always thought you had to order your actual certified bs...which can be done right after a baby is born and still in the hospital...but isn't obtained at the hospital...instead it is mailed to the home a few week after.

I could have totaly misread your statement...and just not understood what you were saying. But I just had to ask.
