Birkenstocks...good or bad for parks?

I love my Birkies but due to being overweight I am unable to wear them all day in the parks. I start having pain in my shins but I know that this is due to my weight and the fact that Birks are a harder walking surface than sneakers. However, when we were at WDW summer during Hurricane Frances I broke 3 toes and boy was I glad that I had 2 pairs of my Birks with me because I couldn't tape my toes and the way your foot sits in the sandal I could literally walk with hardly any pain. The front of my foot was totally purple and if I tried to put a sneaker on the pain was awful. Plus, I think they do great when they get wet.

WOW...I'm so glad I started this thread! It's great to meet all you Birki lovers! I got my last pair on overstock...they were exactly the pair I wanted! I had seen them the year before on QVC, but got them for much cheaper on Overstock! I'm thinking of picking up one of the waterproof pairs (for the waterpark)...not sure if they're as comfy as the originals though.

I love my Birks and wear them all summer, but found that I couldn't wear them at WDW. I always ended up with blisters on the top of my toes. I have to wear tennis shoes with comfy socks.

I wore mine to WDW and did great. The only problem is the big white strap marks they leave across my feet from getting very brown feet!!!! I have 3 pairs of the the Madrid style, pink and silver and white)

Looks pretty silly when you wear delicate strappy sandals!

Definitely remember to sunscreen the tops of your feet! Even though it was October I put sunscreen on my feet the days I was wearing my Birkenstocks and I came home with big white stripes across my feet. I only wore them 2 or 3 mornings, so I was surprised to have strap marks. That Florida sun is STRONG. :sunny:

I wear Birks in the park and I switch off with my Reeboks. Whenever I go back to the room I switch shoes and I find that helps. I do commit a fashion crime when I do it but I will wear socks with my Birks and jeans. My feet are just more comfortable to me that way and if it keeps me blister-free and able to go longer in the parks then I will do it! :)

I wear a pair of Birkis almost conatantly and I love them but I have a hard time walking all day in the parks with them. I tend to get lower leg pain when I try to wear them for a full park day. I think it has to do with walking on pavement all day. As others mentioned I take a pair of reeboks and switch off. This way I can wear my sandles for half days and still be comfortable. I am going to try a pair with a back strap this year and see if that helps. I do have a tendancy to grip with my toes even though I don't need to to keep my three strap birkis on. Old habits from years of wearing flip flops.
