We just got back from WDW and I have a question. We went to WDW when I was young. Not sure of the year, but it was before Epcot was built and the only resorts were the Poly and the Contemp. We stayed at the Poly. I remember getting on a boat at the poly to go to an island in the lake. It was full of birds (parrots, etc...) and nice trails. What was this called and when did it close? I'm pretty sure we passed by it several times during boat rides from WL to Fort Wilderness. It looked pretty overgrown.

The one funny thing I remember was that we were all starving and my dad said dont worry, we can eat something when we get to the island. Once we arrived, they promptly informed us that no food or drinks were available there. Angry family.....

Another thing: Didn't there also used to be a waterpark called River Country? I think I saw it along the lakeshore between WL and Fort Wildneress. Fun how trips bring up old memories.

Treasure Island...been closed since 97ish.

Yes River COuntry closed around that time frame as well.

It wasn't called Treasure Island, it was called Discovery Island. I think it closed down when Animal Kingdom was being built, & it's part of it now. I remember going to River Country too, & I think that closed down in '01 or so.

all the buildings still exist on discovery island. the birds were moved to animal kingdom. and river country still exists... but both discovery island and river country lay in ruins... and are a very disturbing site.

FWIW: Treasure Island was renamed Discovery Island in 1978
