Prayers for those children. Sounds like perhaps an aortic aneurysm or something? How awful.
As someone else posted, if the divorce isn't final she would be next of kin. DH's aunt died suddenly when her kids were 7 and 10--she was separated from her husband but since nothing else had been done, he made all the funeral decisions as he was her next of kin.
