Biggest Loser "Sizzlin' Hot" Summer Challenge

NOW FOR THOSE OF US WHO SET A GOAL FOR THE CHALLENGE!!!

NOTE: This list includes participants who have reported in within the last 3 weeks, once someone misses 3 weigh-ins they are dropped from this report.

How this works: You set your goal for what you want to lose in the challenge. Then I calculate your weight loss in the challenge divided by your goal to get a % to goal.

Anybody can change their goal at anytime (or add a goal) – all you have to do is send me a PM.

Since the goals are an individual thing, the list is just in alphabetical order to make it easier for everybody to find their own name. If there are any questions or suggestions please let me know.

We have done 4 out of 13 weeks, so the challenge is 31% complete.

Sorry to go MIA again. I don't know where the weekend went. Well, actually I do. I slept past 11 AM yesterday morning! My father had to wake me up because I had covered myself in blankets and it was too hot to have blankets on. Moving on...

Not much new to report. My weight has been slowly going in the right direction. I'm nowhere near my goal for the year or month, but at least I'm focused on losing the weight for myself. :)

Have a great day tomorrow everyone!

Here we celebrate our progress and recognize our superstars.

Thanks to ohMom-Molli for these clippies. They were used for a previous BL but we can recycle. Don't they look great!

 Those are great recycled clippies!! I hope to earn one to wear proudly!! Congrats all losers!!! Just want to send a shout out to all those M.I.A. Each week is a new START!! Do not worry if you've gained or haven't lost, the key is coming to support your losing habit...it can be done....sickness, injuries, stress, life always want to sidetrack what's best for us..stick to the great suggestions here and come post on those bad, wanna eat junk, not work out days!! I kept on too many pounds for too long because I just did not have it within me...I fluctuate with confidence in losing weekly and sometimes hourly!! I have moments where I just want to 'take a break'...the last break I took I added 90 pounds!!! Then I was just too discouraged to look back at losing it all over again! Well, third time is the charm..I'm down 60 pounds as of Sunday!!! Sure, I still have 30 to get back to my lowest 3 years ago and then another 25 to hit goal...but it's happening!! I couldn't do it without you all and love seeing the old and familiar names...donac, worfiedoodles, ohmom,...such great encouragers and there are many more, just so happy to be back to losing!

THANK YOU ALL!!!

Hope everyone is having a great start to the 4th week. I did go to the dr about my foot. It's a strain and I have to stay off the treadmill for 2 weeks and no weight bearing activites. Hope you all have a great week.

So, here I am – back after being MIA for almost the entire month of June. My mid-year promise is to be more active on this board. I promise. :thumbsup2

Some of you may remember that I walk 3.5 miles daily. It is something that I’ve been doing for almost a year and a half. I enjoy my walks – I get to clear my head, “snoop” on my neighbors, and earn some WW activity points.
About a month ago, I started getting awful heel pains – still not sure if it is a heel spur or plantar fasciitis (I currently have no health insurance, so I haven’t seen a doctor). I've had to drastically cut down on my walks.

It is killing me that I haven’t been too active, and considered getting a stationary bike.

But now I am rethinking that idea and am toying with the idea of getting a “real” bike. I need some help/opinions/suggestions. Here’s the deal - I’m not particularly coordinated. As a kid, my bike riding skills were about a 4 on a scale of 1 to 10. I probably haven’t been on a bike in over 30 years.

Where do I begin? :confused3

What type of bike should I be looking at? (I’m thinking a cruiser, right?) Do I have to worry about weight limits? (I’m currently around 210 lbs.) Should I go to a bike store, or can I just go to someplace like Target? I’m on a pretty limited budget – is it possible to get something decent in the $150 range? I'm just planning on using it in the local park's bike path - nothing too crazy or extreme.

I know these questions may seem pretty basic (or even downright stupid), but like I said, it has been over 30 years since I last rode (and was very wobbly even back then!)

I’d appreciate any input you guys have. :)

Thanks,
Laura

I have a confession to make. I've had McDonalds 3 days in a row!!!!!! Ugh, just saying it makes me want to hide my head in shame!!! They were all for convience reasons but thats no excuse!! I've made some bad eating decisions today, but i just packed both my lunch and my dinner for tomorrow and they are healthy! A nice big salad for lunch, with baby arugula lettuce mix, avacado, cucumbers, apples, turkey bacon, and a handful of sunflower seeds, and a tiny bit of my 40 calorie mustard wasabi dressing. Plus pinneapples and applesauce for snack throughout the day. Then for dinner, chicken salad (homemade so i know whats in it) on a wheat bun with carrots and grapes.

Dinner was tricky because i have to go right from work to class so i needed something handheld. This was the best I could come up with. I even washed and "plucked" my grapes ahead of time so i dont have to inspect them while driving. Does anyone else inspect their grapes before they eat them. I am so weird about grapes. I cant not look at it before it goes in my mouth.

I started my summer class today, spanish 112 and OMG! He teaches the entire class in spanish!!!!! I've only taken one semester so far of spanish so this is going to be REALLY tough. Plus a TON of work since its a summer class. I did understand 95% of what he was saying but its tough to keep up with and its going to be every night for the next month. I guess thats the best way to learn though?? Between this class and studying for the praxis this next month is going to be super stressful.

I will need to make sure to plan ahead on days that i have time. For me running around and stressing out means bad eating decisions. That is why i packed my stuff for tomorrow today, even though i am exhausted and i still have homework to do and work in the AM.

Today I went with boyfriend's family who are visiting from Cali to the science center. We have never been and im glad we went with kids, but it was really fun, and i really like hanging out with his family.

And finally, I don't know if i shared this info yet, but I gave my first tour at the new job! (Well that was saturday, i've actually given three tours now!). They've all gone very well and i'm pretty excited!!! I'm really liking this job so far, and i hope it stays that way because things are not great at the other job!

I'm sure i'll be telling you more about it but now i need to go get that homework done so i can sleep!

Laura!!
So sorry about your foot, if it is plantar, there are inserts you can put in your shoe that help greatly! My husband gets that and the Dr. Scholl's ($20 ones) really really helped him!
For the bike, yes a cruiser is your best bet...a really good one will run $350...if you were nearby, I would loan you mine for nothing! I think if you went to a quality bike shop you could find a decent used one or one on sale for around $200 and maybe even $150. Just get a very comfy seat...and by all means try them out, weight does not matter at all! I think it is a great solution!! And welcome back!!!

Ooo, I love this picture, Fran! I am running the Donald Half but I did not realize that it was the 15 year anniversary. Maybe we will have a special medal like the Mickey folks! :donald:

Lisa ... I think I saw the medal. I will see if I can find it and post it here. It looked like a really cool medal.

I am not where I hoped to be at this stage of the year. I had a great start but started floundering in February when I was injured. I need to buckle down and get on track to ensure that I am at or near my goal when I go back to WDW in November for the Wine & Dine and totally at goal when I am at the Donald. I did this in the fall and I can do it again so watch me go, go, go! :car:

:cheer2: Yes, you can! :cheer2: Yes, you can!

It's so tough to be the sandwich generation, Fran. Our generation is always the one stuck in the middle getting squeezed and squashed! :crazy2: I bet your mom knows that the party should go but maybe isn't quite ready to give it up. Hopefully she will after this last hurrah.

Thanks for listening! I agree, the sandwich generation is very challenging.

I feel your pain with the own business. :flower3: I would have a hard time working for someone else now because I love the great freedom and flexibility that I have but, as you know, it is relentless. You can never truly get away from your business. Ever. It is wearing. So it is really important to do what is best for your family, even if it means making someone else disappointed. :hippie:

My husband loves owning his own business ... but just like you said, he is tied to it. He considers hiring someone to help so that he could have a little freedom, however, with an employee comes additional pressures he is just not ready for.

And on that happy note I will go back to work. Have a great day all! :goodvibes

Here is the image of the medal I found. I looks awesome! :goodvibes

It is so bittersweet when our moms/aunts reach that stage and it's just hard to bring the families together! I admire your mom's tenacity...I bet it's a piece of life that keep her looking forward to something, each holiday probably brings back so many memories. Maybe she will be understanding and you can move her celebration to Labor Day? or Flag Day :) It is so important for our own families to find time together as busy as life keeps us..thanks for sharing...it really does make me feel better..I have analyzed my issues with my mom for far too long, no matter how much wisdom/understanding I gain on the issue, the facts don't change...we're just not close and it's soo hard to try to make it that way. I have three precious children that I have worked hard to have a different type of relationship with and I am thrilled to say it's working even with 3 teenagers! They keep me filled with joy that I lose when I focus on my own mom....I never give up hope, but just try not to have any expectations.

I have recovered from last night's snafu...it does sound calorie wise like a little bit, but the sugars/salts/fats in just that mini sampling can bloat me for days...I do not know why, but I just can not eat that stuff anymore! Over Memorial Day I had potato salad and bbq for just 2 days! And one piece of cake (very small), no sugar drinks at all! Hmm..I might have had one sip of Coke..just to taste but gave the rest of the can to dh! :) And I weighed 4 pounds heavier after 2 days (I know I kept the portions good!)....Within 3 I had lost them all, but it's crazy what eating that stuff does to me! Ugh!

Thank you so much for listening and understanding. I also have created a different relationship with my 3 sons ... and I have to say it is working also. But just as Lisa has said, it is hard being the sandwich generation.

Hello friends! Since I just started this here I am on way to reaching what I want in 2013 if I can just stick with it -that is the hard part for mel after a week or two not paying attention I just give up but I am working hard of fixing that..

I wasn't that great over the weekend but did manage to just stay within my points (using the extra 49 as well) However I did get in some excersise - we went to the beach yesterday and I was in the water swimming and goofing of with my Hubs for about 1.5 hrs.. boy can I feel it in my abs today!

my goal for the week is to manage my points better!

My co worker is on vacation so I might not have a change to pop in much so I am rooting for you all to have a GREAT week, feel better if your not right now, take a minute to breathe if you running your kids everywhere under the sun and keep moving forward towards a heathlier you!

Thanks for the positive words!

Glad the new job is working out! Don't beat yourself up about McDonalds. I sometimes just crave something from there. What I try to do is control what I eat. I usually get a kids happy meal or chicken snack wraps instead of the value meals. The funny part is that I love how it tastes ... but 20 minutes later is makes me feel terrible:sick:and I ask myself why did I eat that!

Oh, I am so sorry about your foot. My husband also has plantar fasciitis. He wears inserts in his shoes also and these seem to help.

I don't know anything about bikes. Hopefully someone on here does.

Intentional Weight Loss from Wikepedia

According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010 Executive Summary, which was released on January 31, 2011, those that achieve and manage a healthy weight do so most successfully by being continuously vigilant in taking in only the amount of calories that meet their needs and with physical activity.

Low-calorie regimen diets are also referred to as balanced percentage diets. Due to their minimal detrimental effects, these types of diets are most commonly recommended by nutritionists. In addition to restricting calorie intake, a balanced diet also regulates macronutrient consumption. Therefore, from the total number of allotted daily calories, 55% should come from carbohydrates, 15% from protein, and 30% from fats with no more than 10% of total fat coming from saturated forms.[14] For instance, a 1,200 calorie diet would consist of no more than 660 calories from carbohydrates, 180 from protein, and 360 from fat. Although counting calories seems difficult altogether, the long term benefits of calorie restriction are many. After reaching the desired body weight, the amount of calories consumed per day may be increased gradually, without exceeding 2,000 net (i.e. derived by subtracting calories burned by physical activity from calories consumed). Combined with increased physical activity, low-calorie diets are thought to be most effective long term, unlike crash diets which can achieve short term results, at best. Physical activity could greatly enhance the efficiency of a diet. The healthiest weight loss regimen, therefore, is one that consists of a balanced diet and moderate physical activity.

The golden rule in weight loss is to avoid foods that are high in sugars[citation needed], which contribute to increased body mass and are detrimental to the overall health. Further, weight gain has been associated with excessive alcohol consumption.[citation needed] Depression, stress or boredom may also contribute to weight increase,[citation needed] and in these cases, individuals are advised to seek medical help. A 2010 study found that dieters who got a full night's sleep more than doubled the amount of fat loss compared to sleep-deprived dieters.[15][16]

I am sure none of this is new to anyone on this thread, however, I found it interesting. And on that note ....

QOTD (July 3): What are you planning to eat on the 4th of July? How do you intend to resist and/or alter your eating for the day, in order to help with your intentional weight loss goal? (If you are not from the US, share a national holiday from your country and apply the question to that day.)

Well.....I have been MIA since I finished my week of coaching. Has been absolutely chaotically busy with the end of the school year and having to say n to some of my favorite students and colleagues.

Fell off the wagon with a big thump and though Lisah, Fran, Pamela, and Buffy have sent it by my place through messages on the DIS and MFP, I have yet to manage to jump back in. I am gathering up my resources and getting my plans together as best I can, but I have a big unknown ahead of me because I leave Thursday morning to spend 3 weeks in Norway and Scotland. Will be able to cook my meals while at a friends in Norway but always struggle to find what I need at the store.

Anyway, thanks to you all for checking up on me and keeping the wagons circling. I think I will manage to pull myself aboard though I feel like I am running behind it right now.......and have managed to find nearly all that I lost in Week 1 of the challenge......bummer.

I did promise myself that I would answer the QOTDs so I should do that now.

Question of the Day Friday:
Disney12403.jpg

Our journey around the world and into the future begins to today! EPCOT stands for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow and was a concept for a future world.

What in your health journey have you experimented with in order to help you reach your goal and create yourself a better tomorrow? Is there a certain diet you followed? Exercise plan? Did it work, or did you find that you needed to tweak it or start completely over because it just wasn't right for you?

My most successful loss occurs when I restrict my carbs intake. I try to stay high protein and high vegetables. I find that if I am in this pattern, I am not hungry but breaking it even a little can easily lead to binge carb loading......so that is not so good.

Disney121941-1.jpg

QOTD Saturday: As you enter the park you happen upon future world. Here we learn all about imagination and innovation. Most of us had already talked about our "one little spark of inspiration" so let's talk about these lesser known fellas. The jamminators are true innovators, using their cleaning supplies (which is all they have) to make awesome music. In what ways have you become an innovator on this journey? What health challenges do you face daily that you must come up with creative solutions to? Do you walk during your lunch break? Do you try and stand up most of the day, or perhaps use household items as weights if you are staying at a friends house?

I have given up the elevator at both home and work....take to the stairs.

Disney12803copy.jpg

QOTD Sunday: A Disney question today! Epcot is mostly known for the world showcase. A beautiful display of 11 different countries. Which one is your favorite and why? Which country would you put in world showcase if you could?

Favorite: Japan because I enjoy sitting in the tranquil gardens.

To add: India because it is very different from all the other countries represented and it has a vibrant colofrul culture and great spice in its food.

Disney121572.jpg

QOTD Monday: If WDW is known for something, it's gift shops! Epcot is one of the best place to shop besides DTD. With all the different culture's stores and Mousegears, there are plenty of different things to buy. Some people consider shopping a workout, which got me thinking: How do you define exercise/workouts? What is the least amount of work you have to do before you consider it a real workout?

A good healthy sweat derived from purposeful physical activity is what I look for to consider myself having worked out. I find that I can get this from cleaning my apartment actually, but I rarely count that as my exercise for the day.

Disney12815-1.jpg

QOTD: Wednesday. What do we all love? Food, of course! If shopping isn't fun for you, Epcot is probably one of the best places to try new and interesting food. What is your favorite restaurant in Epcot and what do you like to order?

Extra Question: Pizza is one of my "binge foods", as I call it, because I usually end up eating way more than I am supposed to and it triggers something that makes me want to eat more and more junk. What is your trigger food and do you take it completely from your diet or eat it every once in awhile and just try to control those cravings?

Tepan Edo is my favorite. I enjoy the chicken and steak combo.

Pizza is a trigger food for me too. I can't just eat one slice and combine that with my carb comment earlier......Pizza is bad news for my diet.

Disney12910.jpg

QOTD Thursday: One of my favorite things about Epcot is Illuminations. Epcot itself is a celebration of all cultures coming together and celebrating each others unique differences and lifestyles. Illuminations reminds us when we work together we can achieve the impossible and make the world a better place. In your journey to health are you more of a team player, or do you do better alone? Do you belong to a sports team, have a workout group, or attend WW meetings? Since we are all here on the BL thread, I assume we are at least a bit of a team player and do better with encouragement from others!

I tend to be a more solitary being. But I do need the push that others give by being involved in this challenge and MFP.....just need to use them now.....

Question of the Day:

Have you ever noticed how Disney uses water in some way or form in its movies and parks? Describe one movie scene and/or place in Disney that provides a “water” memory for you.

My favorite WDW water memory is Splash Mountain. The first summer I worked at WDW was 1992 when the were building the attraction. There were Cast Member previews that allowed us to ride the attraction before it opened to the public. I rode it 10 times in a row without getting off and just soaked up all the details while lots of jealous guests watched me sail by in my little log. So cool.

Question of the Day (June 30): What kind of fruit do you buy/eat? Are there some fruits you love and some you hate? And here is a challenge for the day …. Eat at least two different fruits today and try to do something different with one of them. (For example, mix some watermelon juice with some unsweetened tea, or make a fruit salad.) Share if you tried something different.

I tend to limit my fruit intake due to the high sugar content. But I am looking forward to the arrival of the white peaches that always come in the summer here. Much juicier.

Question of the Day (July 1): I think most of the BL participants live in the Northern Hemisphere (If you don’t I would love to know where you are from). So ... July is a HOT, HOT month. Since exercise is so important to a healthy life style (not just for losing weight), how do you adjust for the heat when you exercise? Do you do other activities that you typically don’t do in the winter months?

Outdoor walking and running is moved to early morning or later in the evening when the sun has begun to lose its punch. But I also utilize the gym for mid-day exercise if it fits best into my schedule.

Question of the Day (July 2): Well … ½ of 2012 is here. Since this day marks the midpoint of the year, did you reach the goal you set on January 1st (if you set one ... or are you half way there) and where do you envision yourself this January 1, 2013? :goodvibes

Yes, I am much healthier than I was in January which was my main goal. And being able to enjoy the roller coasters this summer was my main motivation and that is happening. For January, my goal is to be into 38 inch waisted jeans and trousers. That will help solidify me in the "healthy" zone.

QOTD (July 3): What are you planning to eat on the 4th of July? How do you intend to resist and/or alter your eating for the day, in order to help with your intentional weight loss goal? (If you are not from the US, share a national holiday from your country and apply the question to that day.)

Well the big national holiday here is August 1. There is not however, a big emphasis on food however. I will probably, focus on grilling my meat and veg on the balcony of my apartment while enjoying the day. As for celebrating the 4th tomorrow, I will Skype my family in WV and chat with them but be able to stay on eating targets by not having the direct temptations.....

Hmmm, it seems that answering these questions has helped to get one foot back in the wagon and I seem to be planning how to eat tomorrow and get my exercise in. Will do my best.

Have a great day!

Christopher

We have 2 cook outs to go to. One is steak, salad & grilled garden veggies so that's pretty easy to stay on target with the 2nd one i think they are going to have grilled chicken and hot dogs so I'm just going to have to go with the healthier stuff there. I hope everyone has a great 4th.

Ya know....I can't remember what my half year goals were! I do really like where I am halfway through the year, though. On January 1st 2013, I envision myself just shy of goal, probably. I have a plan for myself to lose one pound a week- this way if I lose a little bit more than that, I'm ahead of schedule, and then I don't set my goals so high I can't reasonably reach them.

That's a good question....for which I don't have an answer! I don't know what I'm gonna be doing on the 4th, but whatever it is, I'll be sure to stay within point range. Probably some grilled chicken and veggies or something like that. And I'll be sure to drink plenty of water to flush out any added salt as well!

Fun Side Note: I'm looking at apartments in Florida for when I move, even though I have no idea when it will happen. I'm basing a lot of my decision on proximity to WDW. That's totally normal, right? ;)

Well.....I have been MIA since I finished my week of coaching. Has been absolutely chaotically busy with the end of the school year and having to say n to some of my favorite students and colleagues.

I know how end of the school year activities can derail you! Glad to see you back here again. We missed you!

Hey ... I hope you do the same for me when I fall off!

So cool.

Christopher, every time you mention about working at WDW I am so jealous. You have some great memories. Splash Mountain is one of my favorite rides! This sounded like a lot of fun.

Sounds great! Sometimes it is the little steps that get us motivated to where we need to go.

Have a great day!

Those cookouts have healthy choices. My mom's cookout does not have a lot of healthy choices, hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, coleslaw, corn. I am bringing a spinach salad. I brought it last year and it was the first item that was gone. I think I am going to bring a turkey burger to the party too. I will have to sneak it in ....

That is a great goal and very reasonable.

Well the people on these boards won't think that unusual ... but off the boards, that may be a different story. :lmao: Happy "future" apartment planning.

We are having a traditional clam/lobster bake. Lobster, clams on the 1/2 shell, steamers with butter, shrimp, the usual.
I'm already trying to figure out how to keep my calories down to a minimum.
I need to browse MFP for calorie info.

This will be tough but I think if I drink water, limit my butter and cocktail sauce, and don't snack that day I can do it.

Anyway, thanks to you all for checking up on me and keeping the wagons circling. I think I will manage to pull myself aboard though I feel like I am running behind it right now.......and have managed to find nearly all that I lost in Week 1 of the challenge......bummer.

Christopher

I'm glad you found your way back to us, Christopher!! You know what to do in Norway even if you can't log food. Watch your sauces and butters, 1/2 plate of veggies and fruit, 1/4 carb, 1/4 protein.
You are going to both countries at a perfect time of year, lots to see and do, a plenty of opportunity to walk, hike, bike ride. Europe is the best for physical activity like that.
I can't wait to hear how it goes!!! I'm jealous!
But hopefully next summer we will be in Spain walking the El Camino de Santiago.

We are going to our friend's house for the 4th. I'm bringing a "lite" 7 layer dip with veggies. I'll also eat a chicken skewer and possibly a bunless hamburger. Lots of fruit and water. As for resisting, I find that if I have a plan I do better so I'm planning ahead of time what I'll eat.

Laura!!
So sorry about your foot, if it is plantar, there are inserts you can put in your shoe that help greatly! My husband gets that and the Dr. Scholl's ($20 ones) really really helped him!

Oh, I am so sorry about your foot. My husband also has plantar fasciitis. He wears inserts in his shoes also and these seem to help.

Thanks - I did get some inserts from CVS and they do seem to help WHEN I actually wear the appropriate shoes. I'm a slave to flip-flops (most likely the reason for the heel issues to begin with) and am working hard to wean myself off of them.

Is there such a thing as a supportive, but still cute, flip-flop? :confused3

We are going to an amusement park that does not let you bring anything in, not even bottled water, and they have nothing remotely healthy to eat. Turkey legs, pizza and beer are the staples there from what I have gathered. I think the only way I will survive without being a complete crank is to just give myself a pass for tomorrow. I'm going to try to eat small portions but small portions of bad food is still bad. At least I'l be doing a lot of walking the next few days.

Alan said he wants to grill out. More then likely hamburgers, hot dogs, maybe chicken. I honestly don't know how I'm going to feel come tomorrow so I'll play what I'm going to eat by ear.

The good news is I just came back from my doctor's office. I saw her nurse practitioner because she was completely booked. I don't have bronchitis or phenomnia (sp). She said my sinuses are just really bad. She put me on an antibiotic, nasal spray, and Robitussin with Coedine. I told her the things that were really bothering me were the constant coughing with the mucus and my throat. I haven't slept well in a week. She said the Robitussin will help me to sleep and I should start feeling better by Thursday.

On the scale news:

I weighed myself in the nude before I got in the shower and scale said 200.8! I'm thinking that pretty accurate considering the dr's office scale said 202.8 and I was fully clothed with shoes on. WOW...
