Biggest Loser 8 Fall Challenge -- for losers and maintainers!

yes, I know feeling sick can really put a stop to your workouts, and even more so when you have a little one that needs attention..god help you if you have both going. My little DD2 has the swine flu...not sure if we will be going to the Doctors today. The fever is so high...it is VERY worry some. I know I won't emotionally eat, I just don't want the stress not to get at me. This is an area of weight-loss I don't have a good handle on. So, here is my question to the group. When you are stressed, very stressed what are some good ways to stay on the path to reaching your goal weight? How do you keep your mind in a place that you can continue to be true to do what you need to do? Ultimately, we have to be healthy for our families, so we can live a long and fun life with them..being stressed, stress eating won't do us any good at the end of the day. Still, it happens...how can we get around this?

 with your daughter. to you.

As for your question - for me - and my journey over the last few years - it's not really one choice to lessen the stress or stop stress eating but to TRY to not be so hard on myself - so all or nothing - I haven't got there yet. But I'm so much better and that's a plus.

Wow.... I can't believe how many of you are sick or have sick children. :confused3 They are calling this flu a "pandemic" and I believe it. Hopefully if it is hitting this early, it will be done early. to each of you who are dealing with this! And another:hug: to your kiddos!

We are (knock on wood) all well here. DD is still coughing, but I expected that. It is definitely improving though.

I am pleased to report I am a SAMER this week. This week was REALLY a struggle for me with the eating, so I am happy to be the same. I kept up the exercise, so that is probably what saved me. Plus no PMS in the house, so that helped!! ;)

Mom and I scrapped for several hours yesterday. I would be up for doing it again, but she might be bored, so I'm not sure what today will bring. DD has a swim event out of town Sat and Sun, so I will be doing lots of driving, but I am already planning on packing healthy lunches and snacks so that we can avoid the drive through and concession stand foods! We may still end up with a meal out Sat or Sun night... but I'm sure I can make a good choice.

I came on here THREE TIMES yesterday to answer the QOTD and I got interrupted every time, so here goes!!

QOTD: If you were given two extra hours to add to your day (JUST FOR TODAY) what would you do with them????

I must say, without a doubt, I would scrapbook. It is one of my favorite activities and I don't get NEARLY enough time to do it. The house is fairly clean because I cleaned for DMom's visit.... I took the end of the week off for the visit, so no work stuff. The kids are in school, so no kid stuff. And I'm not a napper, so I don't really crave that. And while I have kept up with my exercise, I don't love it, so I wouldn't feel compelled to do any extra!

Well... I'm off to hit the shower and see what we are going to do today! Happy Friday the 13th to you all!! (sorry... there was no black cat smilie!)..................P

Pamela - :thumbsup2 on the maintain. It's an underestimated accomplishment in my opinion. Absolutely. All of us will have gains on our journey and maintains are quite pretty during those times.

Sorry to hear about your DD's guinea pig.

Extra two hours - sleep - I adore it.:lovestruc

Congratulations to everyone who has made it this far in the BL8 Challenge! That is a great accomplishment!

A huge Thanks to Jenjolt for being our Coach last week, awesome questions!

Hi! I'm Maria and I'll be our Coach this week. This is my 3rd Challenge, and first time as a COW participant. I coached for a week during the Summer Challenge, and I'm ready to motivate us as we get ready for American Thanksgiving and all the December holidays! I work full-time as a grants professional for a large homeless services agency, and I've been married for 16 years, with one ds11. I have been overweight since grad school, and the pregnancy didn't help. That darn baby weight, still hanging around 12 years later :rolleyes1 This Challenge has been really productive for me, I'm getting to big milestones and loving it! We have an awesome group of participants, and I really think we'll make that 500 lb goal! :cheer2:

Ok on to the Fun for Friday Friday QOTD: Which Disney hero(ine) is your significant other most like? Why is this a good fit for you? And if you don't have one right now, which Disney parent is most like one of yours, and how did that help form your personality?

My dh is like Shang, from Mulan. He's all business, but he can be romantic when he needs to, and he appreciates a woman who can take care of herself - and even save him occasionally if the need arises. ;) He is a great fit for me because we are so different -- while I have a strong core and am very capable, I also like my flights of fancy and imagination. He is very practical, I am very magical :wizard:, it's a great fit!

I can't wait to read your replies!

Maria :upsidedow

Thanks Jen.

Hi Maria. Thank you!:flower3:

Good morning, all! :goodvibes

Please remember to PM those weights to LuvBaloo and COW numbers to donac today. :thumbsup2

Hi MelanieC! Glad to see you back! :flower3:

Interesting question! I would use 30 minutes for exercise (extra), 30 minutes for extra piano time and an hour to get ready for our guests coming tonight.

dreamlinda, hope that you can get in some relaxing time this week-end.

Too bad you don't get to observe him in turn and give him some pointers on how to be a good principal! ;)

redwalker, I think that you answered your own question! :thumbsup2

pjlla, so sorry about DDs guinea pig. Our little furry friends leave a big hole in our home when they go. The other guinea pig is probably lonely and a little freaked out. It may need more trips in the laundry basket to keep it company, unless you are going to get another guinea pig . . . :rolleyes1

:grouphug: to everyone who is sick or has sick family members. It is so scary when you realize that the real flu season -- the one we ususally have -- hasn't even really started yet! :scared1: Take care of yourselves so you can take care of others (and earn points for the COW!)

Have a great day!

I laughed at your response to Dona. So true.

I'm down .9.

I'm finally feeling better - and guess what? Work told me to stay home. I guess no one wants to catch swine flu! I'll get in some good DIS time today, maybe catch up with the laundry (we're out of towels!) and a little exercise.

So I lost almost 5 pounds this week. But I totally feel like I cheated. I've not felt like eating, so it's been easy to stay on plan foodwise. And I exercised only once. I knew I'd have a loss this week since last week I was PMSing and had gained from eating too many birthday treats. But still, not sure where such a big loss came from. :confused3

When you are stressed, very stressed what are some good ways to stay on the path to reaching your goal weight? How do you keep your mind in a place that you can continue to be true to do what you need to do?
When we're stressed, we crave foods for comfort. If you feel you need comfort food, maybe substitute a healthier treat - maybe a nice cup of tea, some sugar free hot chocolate. Alternatively, what can you do for yourself that feels like a treat? Remembering to breathe can really help. Stop what you're doing, take a few deep breaths. Most importantly, as you're still figuring out how to avoid stress eating, don't beat yourself up if you slip up. Just get back on track asap.

I've got to think about the QOTD...I'll be back!

Thank you, Worfiedoodles, for being our coach this week!

Congratulations to everyone who has made it this far in the BL8 Challenge! That is a great accomplishment!

This is so true! We all deserve a pat on the back for sticking with it! :cool1:

Ok on to the Fun for Friday Friday QOTD: Which Disney hero(ine) is your significant other most like? Why is this a good fit for you? And if you don't have one right now, which Disney parent is most like one of yours, and how did that help form your personality?

Great question! I have to say the DH is like the Beast in Beauty and the Beast. He really is a nice guy and takes good care of us but he likes to think he is really grumpy and gruff (which he can be at times) until someone comes along and coaxes him out of his grumpiness. He likes strong, scholarly women and he really gets into planning things once he decides it is a good idea. We are a good fit because I like to be in charge and he likes to be able to do his thing and show up. When I told him about this question and my answer he replied that he needs to work more on his grumpiness! :confused3

Pamela - :thumbsup2 on the maintain. It's an underestimated accomplishment in my opinion. Absolutely. All of us will have gains on our journey and maintains are quite pretty during those times. . . .

ITA, lisaviolet!

, Cinderella Girl, don't let the drama derail you. You can't control your family or what happens at work but you can control how you react to it (that is a paraphrase of the wise words of pjlla).

Good Morning Everyone!

I had a bad weigh in this week. Up 4 lbs!:scared1:
I am so glad it is Friday and I have a weekend to get focused again.
I am determined to conquer my weight once and for all.
The family and work drama in my life has taken over my life and I am tired and burnt out because of it. Something has got to give!

I hope everyone has a Magical Day!!!!pixiedust:

Molly :goodvibes

Hang in there...sorry to hear there is drama in your life.

Did my weigh in and finally - I had a nice loss for the week.. 2.6!

My total since I started Oct 1st is 7.6 so I am finally moving along...

Have an awesome weekend!

Only had a loss of .2 for the week but with the stress and PMSing I should be thankful! Gonna try and stay OP as much as possible this weekend. Really need to go to my room right now and clean it. Sunday will be hard staying OP as I'm going to see Christmas Carol with some other disboards members and eating at 5 guys burgers. Not much that I can eat. Plan on popping my own popcorn to take with me and some 100 calorie bars. I'll try and be good today to help with that. Veggie stir fry for lunch sounds really good and healthy.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Good Morning Everyone! I know this will sound strange to many of you, but today I am celebrating because I weighed in at 199.5. This is the first time in 3 years that I have weighed less than 200. So - 40 pounds to go and a lifetime of maintenance, but I am oh so happy today! :goodvibes

Thanks to Jenjolt for tackling the coaching duties last week! :cool1
Thanks Worfiedoodles for taking the coach role this week :goodvibes

I did my weigh in this morning, and I'm up 0.2pounds. :mad:So I'm going the wrong way this challenge. I was really expecting a small loss this week. Next week will be better, as I continue to get the exercise in (I got 45min in last night:banana:). with the gains the last 2 weeks, I weigh more than at the start of the challenge. I've been stuck inside the same 5pound window since May. So on a positive note, I've mastered maintaining, I just have to kick it up and get back to losing:cheer2::upsidedow

DH is the Seven Dwarves: Sleepy & Dopey this morning, Grumpy last night (often tries to hide his tender side like Grumpy), Happy & Doc most of the time, and sometimes Sneezy! We're a perfect fit most of the time, but it doesn't work well when we're both Dopey or both Grumpy :goodvibes

Ultimately, we have to be healthy for our families, so we can live a long and fun life with them..being stressed, stress eating won't do us any good at the end of the day. Still, it happens...how can we get around this?

When I'm stressed I have to go for easy. Which usually means we end up not cooking proper meals, so I have to get some quick/healthy frozen meals when I'm in the grocery store. I also make sure to have bell peppers around as they are a great stress food: I was told as teenager that the sweet red/orange peppers are loaded with vitamin c and other nutrients that help stress; I've never researched it myself, but I do know that I want them when I'm stressed and not feeling well.
I also have to focus on staying positive. I do mess up my eating when I'm stressed, but I can't let guilt take over and create more stress and then more bad food choices. When I'm really stressed, I also try to have gum around and keep chewing. Sometimes when I'm stressed I'll put fun music on and dance with the kids. Or if I'm dealing with a sick child, I'll put on one of their favourite shows or movies on and snuggle with them on the couch. I tell myself its okay that things (laundry, dishes, whatever) aren't being done, a cuddling break helps me and the sick child.
I will also remind myself that I'm human and when I make a mistake I tell myself "if a drop a dish emptying the dishwasher, I don't throw the rest on the floor".
Other things I tell myself are: "my kids deserve a happy healthy mom"
& "I'm worth it". If I'm stressed and choose to take 20 min for a relaxing tub instead of doing housework, that's okay if it helps me get my mind back in control.
I also like pjlla's attitude of "control what you can control" :goodvibes

I feel your pain! I am up 3.8 this week...grrr. I start training with my dh tonight and I went to the gym and worked out for 40 minutes last night...so I feel like I am on the right track. Plus my eating has been on point for the last two days....just take it one day at a time and try to think of something each day that will get your head in the right place (take a walk, look at pictures of yourself when you were at a weight you liked being, imagine how you want to look this coming spring.) Good luck!

Way to go on maintaining! Way to look on the possitive side. Now that you have that under control, time to start losing again! I loved your comment about the 7 dwarfs! I am going to use that to describe my dh too if you don't mind! Especially the sneezy part! Mostly he is like happy, good natured and can carry on a decent conversation!

Hope everyone is having a good weigh in day and are charged up for this next week! This would be a great week to have a great loss since the week after will be such a challenge with thanksgiving and going into on a high note would help with your self esteem and may help you make better choices that week!

Sarah

Glad you enjoyed it! I just realized I missed Bashful in the list of 7 dwarves.

A new fun game I started this week with my girls. When we're driving in the van, we often sing silly made up songs, for variety the other day, I started singing bits of Disney songs and they'd guess which movie its from. I did that when we dropped the older one of at Brownies, and then the younger one and I went home and she told DH about it. He pulled out his laptop and started playing different Disney songs for Kaleigh and I to guess at it. It was fun and relaxing. Kaleigh's only 4, and we realized that a lot of the older Disney movies we haven't watched enough with her.

Well, decent week for me -- down 1.2lbs. I think I've been fairly consistent each week and down about a pound most weeks and I'm happy with this. I try to do things in moderation so I've been counting my calories but not trying to deprive myself of everything. I work out 5 - 6 days per week, but only for about an hour or so. I don't really enjoy it but understand that it's something that I have to do in order to get and stay healthy. But, it's definitely not something I look forward to everyday :) I'm now only about 20 pounds away from my April "end" goal (Once there, I'll assess whether I want to try to shed 10 more or if I just want work on maintaining that weight) As for NSV -- this is the part that got me more excited than what the scale said! I got out the tape measure and since the end of Sept., I've lost 2" of my waist and hips, an inch and half off my thighs and a 1/2 inch off my upper arms and chest! :woohoo: Thanks to everyone on this board! I really enjoy reading all of your stories and all the words of wisdom and encouragement -- it definitely helps on this journey!

As for weight loss myth that I've needed to "get over". I guess my biggest hurdle was to learn that I can't lose weight and sustain a loss with dieting alone. I lost a significant amount of weight a few years ago only to have it all come back (and then some) because all I did was restrict calories (and restricted them severely). I need to watch my calories -- but still need to know that I can have a day here or a day there where I can "have a little fun." I add in the exercise and the weight is still coming off (in fact at about the same rate as dieting alone), but I don't feel like I'm being deprived, like I was a few years ago. And, I think I'm actually in better shape than I was then because I'm toning muscles!

Okay - which character is my husband? Hmmm - good question. At times I think I'm married to Goofy -- he's just so funny/silly and really makes me and the boys laugh - a lot! At other times -- it's Grumpy lives with us and we all turn on our "Goofy" act to get him to lighten up! We work because we seem to be able to flip flop our personalities -- if that makes sense. When I'm stressed -- he knows exactly which personality to bring out in order to help me be "de-stress" and vice versa with him.

Phew -- that was long winded! to those that are sick or have sickies in the house! :cheer2: to those that have lost or maintained this week! to those that gained -- you know you can do it and get back on that weight loss train again!! Hope everyone has a great weekend!!

Hey everyone! My computer is not working but I'm keeping up with my blackberry. I'm just not that good typing on it so I'm mostly reading. I had a loss this week of 2.8. I'm happy! :)

Well, my husband has always had the nickname of "Doc" because he fixes things all the time, especially computers. He has taught me everything I know about computers. His parents were also in the medical field while he was growing up so he knows a lot. He's a good match because we just click and we have a lot of the same interests.

pjlla, so sorry about DDs guinea pig. Our little furry friends leave a big hole in our home when they go. The other guinea pig is probably lonely and a little freaked out. Thanks so much for the warm thoughts. She is in the basket again right now, loving all the attention.

But you did the right thing! You came here to get yourself BACK ON TRACK! Four pounds isn't the end of the world.... even though it may seem like it when combined with other big stressors in your life. Don't throw in the towel! You CAN get back on track and conquer your weight issues! Come talk to us ANYTIME... we will help in any way we can!

Sorry to hear about your DD's guinea pig.

I'm down .9.

Thanks for the nice thoughts and sympathy. Nice job on the .9!!

Did my weigh in and finally - I had a nice loss for the week.. 2.6!

My total since I started Oct 1st is 7.6 so I am finally moving along...

Wow... you are really doing great with the weight loss! Keep going! This was a GREAT week for you!

Only had a loss of .2 for the week but with the stress and PMSing I should be thankful! Gonna try and stay OP as much as possible this weekend. Really need to go to my room right now and clean it. Sounds like a great plan for the weekend. I need to make a FIRM plan for my eating this busy weekend, so that I don't give in to temptation, exhaustion, or frustration! Let me know how the movie is! I'm the only one in my family really interested in seeing it, but I wouldn't hesitate to take myself if I thought it was worth it.

Great week - 2.8 loss! About time :)

WOOHOO.... 2.8 is GREAT!! (Hey... that rhymes! :rotfl:)

Good Morning Everyone! I know this will sound strange to many of you, but today I am celebrating because I weighed in at 199.5. This is the first time in 3 years that I have weighed less than 200. So - 40 pounds to go and a lifetime of maintenance, but I am oh so happy today! :goodvibes

SUPER DUPER job on reaching "ONE-DERLAND!!" It is a terrific feeling to hit milestones like that, isn't it??!! Just remember that GREAT FEELING and bottle it up somewhere inside... then when you are feeling defeated or frustrated with your weight loss, pull out that feeling and remember how GREAT it is.... and remember that "NOTHING TASTES AS GOOD AS SLIM FEELS!"

A new fun game I started this week with my girls. When we're driving in the van, we often sing silly made up songs, for variety the other day, I started singing bits of Disney songs and they'd guess which movie its from. Kaleigh's only 4, and we realized that a lot of the older Disney movies we haven't watched enough with her.

We have a Disney Music game that the kids and I like to play. It is an electronic game that you punch in codes and it plays Disney songs... and someone has to guess the name of the song, or the movie, or something like that, depending on what card you drew. It is a lot of fun! But we (mostly me) end up humming Disney tunes for DAYS afterwards.

Well, decent week for me -- down 1.2lbs. I think I've been fairly consistent each week and down about a pound most weeks and I'm happy with this. :woohoo: on the 2.8!

SO MANY of you are posting GREAT losses this week!! I am so impressed.

DMom and I went to the mall for a little while today while my car was being fixed. I didn't buy much, but it was fun to walk around and window shop and talk with Mom. We had lunch at Ruby Tuesday's.... I had the salad bar. I didn't try to kid myself that the salad was actually "diet" food (I had pasta and some feta and some broccoli salad and some waldorf-type salad on top of my usual greens and such), but it was a far better choice than some of the cheese, creamy things I could have chosen! For dessert we each got a free sample from the Lindt chocolate store!!:lmao:

I am not such how often I'll be able to come on this weekend.... DD has an out-of-town swim meet on Sat and Sunday... it is a 2 hour drive each way, but we are not staying over.... so lots of time in the car this weekend. Thankfully I will have my Mom along to keep me company at the meet.

Lots of prayers and PD to those battling illnesses!............P

Good Morning Everyone! I know this will sound strange to many of you, but today I am celebrating because I weighed in at 199.5. This is the first time in 3 years that I have weighed less than 200. So - 40 pounds to go and a lifetime of maintenance, but I am oh so happy today! :goodvibes

Fantastic Linda!!!!! Fantastic!!!

Hey everyone! My computer is not working but I'm keeping up with my blackberry. I'm just not that good typing on it so I'm mostly reading. I had a loss this week of 2.8. I'm happy! :)

You should be. Translation: You better be!!! :lmao: Write me and catch me up on life. When you're back up of course. That's a lot to ask on a blackberry. :surfweb::laughing:

Thanks for coaching this week! I look forward to your questions!

Thanks for the nice thoughts and sympathy. Nice job on the .9!!

Wow... you are really doing great with the weight loss! Keep going! This was a GREAT week for you!

WOOHOO.... 2.8 is GREAT!! (Hey... that rhymes! :rotfl:)

It sounds like you have learned a great deal about yourself and weight loss on this journey. You are well on your way to a lifetime of success in regards to a healthy lifestyle!

:woohoo: on the 2.8!

SO MANY of you are posting GREAT losses this week!! I am so impressed.
