Biggest Loser 8 Fall Challenge -- for losers and maintainers!

QOTD Friday:
What type of weight loss program are you following, and how is that particular program helping you reach your goals?

I just count calories and exercise. No program really.

The scale showed a HUGE gain for me this week. I knew I would see a gain so I deserve it, I guess.

Been a really bad week. Been down in the dumps. And kids are being difficult, not helping etc. Really hoping to snap out of it soon!!

I got in an extra 85 minutes last night at the Y and I did my semi-usual 30 minutes this morning. I just couldn't pull myself out of bed any earlier this morning to do more!!

I am so happy to report that I am down 2.6 lb this week!! :cool1: :woohoo::yay: I haven't had a loss like that in FOREVER!! I have finally broken into the 130's and I plan on staying there!! My revised goal weight of 130 is finally looking doable!! But I really busted my butt this week with the exercise, etc to lose that 2.6, so I really feel like I EARNED it!

QOTD:

What are your favorite vitamins, herbs, methods of healing? There's lot's of different sicknesses and people deal with healing in many different ways.

Well... I do take a rather holistic approach to most illnesses. I am certainly not the type to run to the doctor for every cold and sniffle. That said, I get an "annual" sinus infection most every winter and I do end up on antibiotics once a year for that. But I can usually get that called in without an appointment :cheer2: That makes me very happy. I have never had a flu show and don't plan on one this year. My kids have never had one either. I was almost talked into it for DD this year, but I am holding off still. DH gets one every year, but he has a chronic neurological disorder and it makes his immune system not always work properly (plus he doesn't eat right or exercise or get enough sleep!! :scared1:). He still manages to get some horrible chest congestion type illness most winters anyhow, but not usually the actual FLU.

I don't take a daily vitamin... mostly because I just don't remember. And I buy vitamins for the kids, but they don't remember unless I remind them. DD eats well, so I don't worry about her vitamin/mineral intake... but DS is another story!

When someone is sick we TRY to get extra rest.... but it is hard for DD to miss school now that she is in high school (and in the honors program to boot), so when she was sick a few weeks ago, she didn't miss a day for three weeks (while she coughed and sniffled, etc)... until she went to the doctor and got Dx with bronchitis, double ear infection, and conjunctivitis in both eyes and was told to stay home for a day or so.

I know.... I can hear you now... "how unfair of her to expose everyone else to her germs!!" etc... and I totally agree. But they REALLY frown on missing school in high school and it is VERY difficult to keep up with the studies and make up the work... especially with a FULL load of honors classes. Plus I just figured it was fall allergies and maybe just a cold.

DS, however, will generally stay home at the drop of a hat... with the smallest sniffle or headache he will ask to stay home.... so I have to kind of play it by ear with him. His head and throat hurt earlier this week, so I let him stay home that day. But he was fine by evening and has barely mentioned it again.

I am not one to push cold medicines or such on my family when they are sick. I figure the body can heal itself just fine (most of the time) with extra rest and fluids. But if you can't sleep due to congestion and/or coughing, then I don't mind giving a dose of decongestant or cough medicine. I do have a lemon/orange tea that I love to drink in the winter when I am not feeling well. I don't think that it has any real medicinal qualities, but it just makes me feel better.

DMom swears by honey and lemon and vinegar for a sore throat and/or cough. Mix a few tsp of each, put a spoonful in your mouth and let it trickle down and coat your throat. It really does help it feel better.... plus honey has been shown to have antibacterial qualities.

Well.... I am home today and I had planned on "raking out" DS's room.... but I just don't feel like it. I think I will sit at my scrapbook table (to reward myself for my great loss this week!)................P

Woohoo! 130's awesome. Hey I had a lingering cough-- oh probably lasted a month last year and I was getting so sick of it- I was doing Everything, gargling salt water, taking cough medicine, every kind of cough drop you name it. Then finally I was poring through home treatment remedies online and came up with a tablespoon of honey with some vodka mixed in right before bedtime.:::::::::::::::: poof::::::::::::::: cough vanished!

A big thank you to 50sjayne for being the coach this past week!

I will be your coach for the next week. I've never done this before, so bear with me!

Congratulations to all the losers and maintainers this week! For those who gained, just get right back on program and dedicate this week to turning things around!

I haven't weighed in yet, but since I've been sick and mostly eating for comfort instead of journaling, I don't expect it to be pretty!

QOTD Friday:
What type of weight loss program are you following, and how is that particular program helping you reach your goals?

I'm doing Weight Watchers. I started in May (for the 4th time). ;) I chose WW because I've had success losing weight on the program in the past. I did regain, but that was my fault for quitting the program. I know if I stay on it for life, I will continue to lose until I reach my goal and will be able to maintain after that. I like the personal support that comes with the meetings, and I like the flexibility to be able to eat whatever I want as long as I count the points for it and stay within my points allowance each day. When I've done programs that restrict certain foods, they're usually some of my favorite foods and I just can't stick with it.

Thanks! ::::::::throws baton:::::::::

I have heard a lot of people who do really well with weight watchers. I would have done it but my schedule is too screwy to try. When people ask me what I've been doing I say eating less, exercising more and going to this board. Then I have to explain the board...

I stayed the same this week and I'm really grateful for it. I was doing really good then got hungry and just started wanting to eat. I really think that us being so slow at work has killed me too- when it gets slow I start cooking samples and they are good! Let's just say I had to keep trying them to make sure they were ok....a lot. I don't know what it is about flossing but I keep forgetting to do it...this weeks journaling should give me a kick in the rear end that I need I hope. I'm gonna go put something together now so it's easier to keep up with.

Corinnak - congrats on the new clippie!

Thanks again to 50sjayne for being last week's coach!:cool1:
Thanks to sskem96 for trying out coaching this week!:thumbsup2

QOTD Friday:
What type of weight loss program are you following, and how is that particular program helping you reach your goals?

I'm started WW-online in the spring, and I was having success, but since summer started I've just been moving up & down in the same 5 range. It worked better for me, when I was tracking my food as I was eating it, rather than entering in the food every couple days.

I got up and weighed in this morning and was up 0.2lbs. So now, I've gained for 3 weeks in a row (for a total of 2.4pounds which isn't much, but the trend is bad). Part of the problem is that I've been eating all my points all the time including the activity points. I have been giving into my cravings in small ways, and I need to get myself re-motivated. I decided to be really bad at lunch and I went to McDonalds and had what I would always get last year, and it tasted good as I was eating it, but left me feeling sluggish, and now I'm going to start fresh. No more McD or A&W for at least 2 weeks, not even the McD thai salad that I like.:goodvibes

I'm down .6. It's a two week weigh-in. So I could call it a maintain. Am I?

No friggin' way!:lmao::rotfl:

Here's to all of us for being here.:thumbsup2

I don't have a program. Well that's not true. My plan is to concentrate on exercise because it goes so beyond weight loss for me - I need it for my mental health.

Food - try to eat consciously. Eat only what I love. ( I feel that for me - a lot of overeating in the past came from not really eating what I wanted to and then not being satisfied and then eating it anyway after the big eating search.

And I ask myself once in awhile "Can you keep this up for life?". If the answer is no - I'm not doing it. Because maintaining when I'm at goal is the real focus. So I concentrate more on the being realistic what I want to/can keep up and what I won't/don't want to.

All the best to everyone.

Ok, so tonight I had my one overindulgence of the week. A drink of pineapple juice and coconut rum and a small pepperoni and mushroom pizza and onion rings. Tomorrow it's back to being GOOD and eating healthy! I don't want to have to go crazy to get off the weekend weight all of next week like this past week. I may even have an extra drink as it was refreshing!

Corinnak - congrats on the new clippie!

You could just be plateuing. I did some research on this online and the only real concrete advice I found to combat this was log your food and do strength training exercises. There does seem to be some real evidence of body set points. I know I get in trouble when I get hungry and therefore think it's ok to eat more. Of course to combat that you need to eat more filling foods and get your water in. :confused3

I'm theoretically doing WW, some weeks much better than others. When I follow it, it works great! This week's COW is really going to help me, journaling my food is key. I do WW online, so it's very easy to see what I have left, and how I'm doing. Like Corinna, this BL Challenge is really helping me, too! I really don't like to report a gain, so I rein myself in when I'd rather eat too much.

This week was a bit stressful -- dh had knee surgery yesterday, and I spent the entire day at the hospital. He is fine and now I can take care of him at home while he recovers, he should be back at work Monday, apparently it was a pretty routine operation.

Anyway, I'm handling the stress really well. I'm actually eating less instead of more. I'm about to have a horrendous week at work with way too much to do, but I'm pretty calm about it. I know I can get it all done, I just have to focus and resign myself to no DIS Podcast or DISing time this week...hopefully next week I'll be able to catch up on everything. I am just going to put my head down, keep the workouts coming and the eating under control, and celebrate when the push is over. I am counting the days until Oct. 28th!

I've just started my Half marathon training, so I have to be extra vigilant and not eat more than I really need. I treated myself to a cute top and warm-up jacket for yoga after my last milestone, and now I need to push on to the next one. Rewarding myself every 5 lbs is working for me so far.

Oh! For the celebrity QOTD-- I'm going to say Kevin McKidd. I just want to look at him...It's a "mom crush", don't worry! :flower3:

QOTD --herbs and healing -- I guess I'm a pretty traditional person. I try to avoid medication, but if I feel I need it, I take cold remedies, antihistamines, Tylenol, whatever the illness seems to warrant. I love chamomile tea with honey if my throat is sore...

QOTD -- most embarrassing moment -- I can't think of one instance that stands out, but I am embarrassed if it's hard for me to fit into a seat.

Maria :upsidedow

Well I just got a new computer. How does this relate to weight loss? Well I spend a lot of unnecessary time on the computer due to the thing being 6-7 years old.:badpc:
I couldn't even defrag any more because I didn't have enough virtual memory. Yay. Looking forward to husband setting the thing up. Need to transfer music files and stuff though. In the process of acquiring though had 2 beers-- oops. Long story short- got computer from a computer guy that husband is friends with because his job is next door to that business. Happy to say that all the kitties are indeed gone from my dear orange girl Ginny's former residence.

It's irritating that with all the food I ate today I am still wanting to eat right now....I'm not even hungry. Deeper issues obviously.

Thanks you, 50sjayne, for being our coach last week. :goodvibes And a big thank you to sskem96 for being our coach this week.

A big congratulations to all of the COW participants. :cool1:

QOTD: What are your favorite vitamins, herbs, methods of healing? There's lot's of different sicknesses and people deal with healing in many different ways.

We take plain old Centrum multivitamins. I also take special vitamins for my eyes because my Dad had early onset macular degeneration and my sister and I have it, too. My sinus rinse (like the neti pot) has helped my sinus problems a lot.

We had our flu shots. Don't know if there will be enough vaccine for H1N1 and have to see how this bout is running it's course. After the memorable year where everyone was hospitalized for pneumonia, we get our shots now.

DS shook off the fever Thursday night and kept it away for most of the day yesterday. But then it came back. Now we are at the relapse, worse cough stage. Will have to see how things go today to see if a trip the after hours care is needed to check him out. It's a bad bug but I am thankful because I know it could be much worse.

QOTD Friday:
What type of weight loss program are you following, and how is that particular program helping you reach your goals?

I am doing WW. I like it but haven't been as faithful and journaling as I should have been. Which is why I am a maintainer this week. Going to pick myself up, dust off my seat, and get back on track now. :thumbsup2

The scale showed a HUGE gain for me this week. I knew I would see a gain so I deserve it, I guess.

Been a really bad week. Been down in the dumps. And kids are being difficult, not helping etc. Really hoping to snap out of it soon!!

. Hope that your bad week is behind you now.

corinnak, that new clippie looks good on you! :goodvibes

It will be an easy week-end taking care of DS and staying home. We are having our house appraised on Monday for a refi -- first time in 11 years that the house is pretty much already appraisal ready -- woo! hoo!

Have a great week-end all! Will try and check in later today.

I'm not following anything structured, just moderation in eating and a concerted effort to exercise even when I don't feel like it. When I've tried diets before, I always end up feeling deprived and fall off the wagon in big ways when my frustration reaches the tipping point. This is working much better to get me started; I might need something more rigid when I'm closer to my goal to drop those last few lbs, but this is a relatively painless way to get started for me right now.

Good for you to be able to have the motivation to stay focused on your own! I know exactly what you mean about getting frustrated and falling off the wagon. I guess that's why I need my WW meetings, so my leader can give me a swift kick in the pants when I'm bad and help me get re-focused!

QOTD Friday:
What type of weight loss program are you following, and how is that particular program helping you reach your goals?

Another WW person checking in. I am not a fan of the meetings, actually. I do use the online tools to track my food and activity. I am also a fan of the Eat-Clean diet and incorporate a lot of the ideas into my life, though I do feel a need to track my food intake. Otherwise, I end up eating either too much or too little before long.

I am really enjoying the new WW online community - there are blogs and challenges and home pages. In my opinion, it is taking WW to a whole new level. Here's a link to my blog on there - there are so many different blogs, it is always easy to find something inspiring to read. You don't have to be a member to read, but you do to comment, I believe.

I consider BL to be an active part of my weight loss program as well. The weigh in is vital to me, and the QOTD keep my head in the game.

I'll have to find time to check out the WW online community more. I looked at it a little back in May, but my computer time is limited, and I just spend most of it on the Dis!

QOTD:

I'm not following any plan. I'm doing what worked for me earlier in the year when I lost 30 pounds. I exercise 2-3 times per day and have cut down on portions. I also eat more vegetables. I try and vary my workout as much as possible so I don't get bored with it. I do the Wii Fit and, PLUS, I do WATP, I walk with my mom when she's visiting. I started doing the 30 day shred again yesterday. I drink lots of water and only drink one soda a day. I drink no more than 2 alcoholic drinks a week, sometimes only 1. I eat Skinny Cow ice cream or low fat ice cream. I still have my sweets including a handful of M and M's a day or a 100 Calorie chocolate. I had been doing the ellipitical until hurting my knee so I have just upped my other workouts. Oh yes, I will also be doing the EA Sports Active starting next week I think. Working out has become a habit and I really love how I feel after I have worked out. I can tell when I haven't worked out as I don't feel up to simple tasks. When I start to feel bored and am afraid I am going to eat something I shouldn't I go downstairs and do the Wii or another workout. Having my clothes feel loose on me is a major plus and I use that to help keep me motivated.

Writing all this down and sharing it with others is also really inspiring me to stick with my goal for a healthy and happier me!

Sounds like you've got your own plan down to a science!

QOTD Friday:
What type of weight loss program are you following, and how is that particular program helping you reach your goals?

I just count calories and exercise. No program really.

Sometimes it just takes some simple changes to see results!

The scale showed a HUGE gain for me this week. I knew I would see a gain so I deserve it, I guess.

Been a really bad week. Been down in the dumps. And kids are being difficult, not helping etc. Really hoping to snap out of it soon!!

I hear you! I didn't even make it to weigh-in this week. My last chance was the 9am meeting today, and I was just leaving work around that time. Hang in there. May the housework fairy wave her magic wand and make it all better. :wizard:

Thanks! ::::::::throws baton:::::::::

I have heard a lot of people who do really well with weight watchers. I would have done it but my schedule is too screwy to try. When people ask me what I've been doing I say eating less, exercising more and going to this board. Then I have to explain the board...

This board definitely is the backbone that many of us depend on I think. Maybe we need to plan a Dismeet when we all reach goal! How about a cruise?

I'm started WW-online in the spring, and I was having success, but since summer started I've just been moving up & down in the same 5 range. It worked better for me, when I was tracking my food as I was eating it, rather than entering in the food every couple days.

I'm in the same boat. Do you have the McDonald's Monopoly game in Canada? I always go to McD more during Monopoly. Just trying to stick with buying sweet teas for the kids and nothing for myself!

I'm down .6. It's a two week weigh-in. So I could call it a maintain. Am I?

No friggin' way!:lmao::rotfl:

Hey, if you're going to indulge at least it sounds like you did it with something you love instead of eating a bunch of other stuff and not getting satisfied because it wasn't what you really wanted. Sometimes you end up eating less in the long run if you do it that way.

I haven't been doing very well journaling the past couple weeks, so I'm hoping the COW will get me inspired to do better as well!

I'm using eat less, move more. I like Lisa's idea of "if I can't do it forever, don't bother". I also focuse on quality eating. Our house has very few snacks in it. Pretzels and raisins. Anything else doesn't stand a chance. I get great results when I track - thanks donac!! Really brings things into focus for me.

Part of the move more is simply to get into better shape. My high weight was 245. I couldn't go up a flight of stairs without gasping. A previous QOTD was about embarrassment... I went up some stairs at work and found myself nearly unable to talk to the person I came to see. It was bad enough that she asked if I was okay.

Right now I'm moving lots as I train for the WDW Half Marathon in January. I love what it's doing for me.

I began to realize that what I do now MATTERS. Thirty years from now the effect of my daily choices will be clear. I chose the matra "Live as if your life depends on it"

Saturday QOTD: What's the #1 item on your holiday wish list?

I think my #1 item is an automatic ice maker for my fridge. There's always 5 ice cube trays with only 1 or 2 ice cubes left because the kids never refill the trays, they just grab a full one! We've never had an ice maker before, but when we visit friends who have them, it always makes me want one.

Saturday QOTD: What's the #1 item on your holiday wish list?

I know this is incredibily boring, but a new vaccuum cleaner. Somehow every new tech gadget is a priority, got iphones, ipods and cool laptops and a 12 year old vaccuum that just does not do its primary job very well, in other words, it just doesn't suck (teehee).

On a different note, I just had a very challenging week. Worked registration at an Affordable Housing Conference (great group of people) where I stood for 11 - 12 hours checking in people and answering a million questions. Food was delivered 3 times a day, no options. Conference food is heavy on carbs (not good ones) and short on vegies, fruit and protein. Managed to take off one pound, think I stressed it off. I have been part of this group for 11 years, and love them all dearly - but I need a nap! Guess I will do that next and get it out of the way. :rotfl:

GREAT REMINDER to be kind to grocery store clerks, food workers and Disney Cast Members who are on their feet all day - they are smiling but their feet just want a ottoman...

Saturday QOTD: What's the #1 item on your holiday wish list?

I want one of those toothpaste dispensers. Lol. Those $20 as seen on tv ones. And I saw something cool on a show the other day, they have oil spray cans. I had no idea. You put your olive oil in this thingy and it sprays it out. You'd use it like the little spray cans of Pam. :yay:

Saturday QOTD: What's the #1 item on your holiday wish list?

I want the Toy Story mania game for the Wii. We don't really exchange big gifts my DH and I..just make sure Santa stuffs our stockings and something small.. Our trips are our gifts.

I also rejoined WW this morning! :cool1: Hopfully going to the meetings will make me stick to what I need to do.

Ugh...I've gained two weeks in a row now! Between birthdays, anniversaries, and being sick (yes, even on my deathbed I'll probably still want to eat!), I feel like I've lost a lot of momentum. I need to get refocused on my weight loss goals and get out and exercise as I've learned that's the only way for me to get weight off -- and keep it off!!!

Congrats to everyone that lost weight and a big hug to those that didn't.

Ha. I am always puzzled by those who don't eat breakfast. For me it's one more opportunity to EAT. Yay it's morning I get to eat food....

Ugh. Gain.
Not bad though, considering I gained, like, 2 lbs or something ridiculous like that over Thanksgiving last weekend, and I have been fairly lazy... going to my cardio classes but not doing my runs. Eating smaller portions, but still leftovers... I lost most of my gain throughout the week, but then I caved yesterday again. Poor organization on my part led to working all day on only an apple I grabbed at 6 in the morning, so when my mom visited last night and took me out for supper, I had ceasar salad (most unhealthy ever but so good...), garlic breadsticks, a big bowl of cheesy pasta, and even a slushy alcoholic drink. So yummy, but so not good for me!

I am going to use it as motivation to work extra hard this week. I have a lot of stuff on my "to do" list today and tomorrow, but I hereby swear to get in AT LEAST two solid workouts, and eat healthy... I think I will have to miss a cardio class this coming week (my students have been BEGGING me for two months to come to a volleyball game, and they always happen to fall at the same time as my class), so I want to be proactive in prep for that. If I am going to miss one fabulous workout I will double my efforts everywhere else.

Hoping to get in a run outside. It is gorgeous today - all the snow has melted! But I know it won't last long (sigh), so may as well head out while I can...

Saturday QOTD: What's the #1 item on your holiday wish list?

I only have to pick one? I have two; the one I will probably get is the Dance Dance Revolution for Disney (I think it's Wii). And my request every year is a ring and significant question from DBF... maybe in another year though.

I have been looking at a video camera for a while, but I think it is a ways off. Honestly, finances are bad right now; I would just love money. But I also have requested scrapbooking stuff, movies, clothes, the Wii Toy Story Mania, WiiFit Plus (I think I might get that earlier anyway)...
ETC ETC ETC
