Big Thunder Roller Cosaster - how much more intense than 7 Dwarfs?

Hi all,

I am a self-proclaimed ride wimp so please forgive this question. My DH, DS (10 and autistic), DD (7) and I did 7 dwarfs. It was too much for me and my daughter, but hubby and son loved it.

Because my son has autism, I tend to check a ride out before he goes on. (Very intense / scary rides are no Bueno if you know what I mean!) He had no problem whatsoever on 7 dwarfs and also loved Goofy's barnstormer.

I'm wondering how much more intense is Big Thunder is than 7 dwarfs. Would you consider it a scary roller coaster?

Thanks so much for any feedback,
Marina:flower1:

If he can do Barnstormer he can do BTMRR. He may even love the interactive queue elements in the standby line. I know I do.

Perhaps your husband could ride first and judge it? Mine train is a very tame coaster for me, and defining intensity varies greatly from person to person. Most of the coasters at Disney aren't terribly intense though. I don't think any of them are "scary", except maybe Rockin' Rollercoaster. I saw plenty of small kids getting on BTMRR yesterday.

I am a ride wimp but have done both and think they are similar. 7D seems shorter in the amount of ride time.

Big Thunder I feel like it has more drops, but 7 Dwarfs does have one. 7 Dwarfs is pretty short though. I like to watch the videos online just to make sure...thats how I was able to do tower of terror...finally.

I'm not one for crazy rides and I found Mine Train to be more intense (albeit smoother) than BTRR.

I would say BTMR is more intense but not by a lot. I would say if your son liked both 7DMT and Barnstormer then BTMR is a pretty safe bet. Maybe have him stand outside and watch it first? Videos are one thing, and certainly helpful, but it be good for him see it in person.

I actually think it is less intense. There are more drops, but they feel less intense than the ones on 7DMT. I agree, let him watch it and see what he thinks.

My 4 year old son rode BTMR for the first time in November and loved it! He also is a huge fan of 7 dwarfs and the Barnstormer. As others mentioned above, BTMR is a longer ride compared to the others. I also think there's more movement around in the seat with BTMR. My son is a lightweight and he got some "air time" on the hills, but this appeared to only add to his enjoyment! Hope your son loves it as well.

The seats on BTMR are not as "tight" as 7DMT. You move around in the seat more on BTMR. Also, BTMR is really loud. When you are going up the big hill, the clacking noise is loud. I think it is a great idea to have him watch the video to get an idea of what is going to happen.

Good luck and happy planning!

Also, we noticed this past trip that the front of BTMRR is much less intense than the back. Our first day we rode in the back and loved it and kept saying it was so much more exciting than we remembered from the year before. A couple days later we were in the front and it felt much slower and less wild. So I'd suggest they ask for the front if they go on.

I think BTMR is more bumper then 7dmt but they are about the same intensity BTMR is louder and you move around in the car more

I am a huge ride wimp and have done both rides. I love them both. BTMRR is louder and may scare your son. I agree with PP-watch the videos first.

It probably hugely depends on where you're riding in the train too. We were at the very front for 7dmt and found it to be super tame, then we were in the back for btmrr and it was way wilder.

I love coasters and find WDW coasters to be all really tame and find the 7dmt rather boring compared to BTMRR. On BTMRR you get bounced around and slide in your seat a lot more, which is more fun for our family. Our whole family will pick BTMRR over 7dmt, we have to ride it multiple times during our stays. A PP mentioned the back is more intense then the front and that is true, and we try to get towards the back when we ride.

There is a lot more stimulation on BTMR than 7DMT. My son loves both, however, his anxiety level waiting for BTMR goes through the roof. BTMR is much bumpier and I am small and get "airborn" from the little, consecutive hills. The lap bar fits tight, so I'm not lifted up from the seat but maybe a half inch.
