Big Thunder Mountain BBQ - pork in the beans?

I doubt that there will be an issue with you having the chicken and ribs served in two separate bowls, if you'd like. I also think the answers to your questions will depend heavily on your server that day. As for the beans, I don't like pork but I loved the beans and did not taste any pork in them. However if I was abstaining from pork for religious reasons, I probably wouldn't want to chance it and would avoid the beans.

I asked a CM at BTRBBQ today about this specific question. She said that the beans are considered a vegetarian side dish, so there is no pork in the recipe. Also, she said that having the chicken in a separate bucket is not a problem. Make sure to note that request when you make your reservation, repeat it to the CM when you check in, and repeat it again to your server. That should insure that the chicken is served separately and does not touch anything with pork.

The fact sheet just lists some options, it doesn't include every vegetarian item in the parks.

I think it highly likely that Disney has a list of which food items have pork for its Jewish and Muslim guests.

Of course they do. They just don't send it ahead of time so be things can change. Talking with chefs there has showed me that they care about those with reasons to avoid certain things. It's why they have ingredient books.

Hint for those avoiding gelatin; check the ingredients before eating any cupcake.

If I wanted to eat there, and if the beans were the make or break dish (which they would be if I wanted to eat there bc veggie skewers, corn, and cornbread isn't a decent combo for us, and the desserts aren't anything we can eat), I would make the reservation for later in the trip (dlr is now charging for missed reservations right?) but go earlier on the trip and ask to speak to a chef. Or get the ingredient book if the chef is busy. That way it can be cancelled if needed.

like if a dish has a bit of crumbled bacon, he can taste it every time, and thinks it tastes horrible

Does he know that Baco-s are not meat? Fun little factoid that amuses us vegetarians.

Not yet. I believe that's true for some venues in WDW though.

Yes they are. All reservations in the DLR require a credit card to book and I believe it's $10 per person for no shows and/or late cancellations. I'm sure there are exceptions for having it waived, but it is the policy and has been for awhile.

That was the other question I posed to Disney, whether we could get the veggie option in lieu of ribs (but in addition to chicken) for a few members of our party - but, again, they said they couldn't answer that specific question. If anyone has a definitive answer to this question, that would be great!

We have one person in our party that usually orders the vegan option. Those ordering the vegan skewers are supposed to have the skewers as their meat substitute and then enjoy unlimited sides. Our skewer eater really really loves the sausage so she has a couple of pieces (they are fairly small) of the sausage. I don't like the sausage so I figure she is eating my portion of the sausage. I really don't think it would be a big deal for one or two people in a good sized party to take a piece of chicken in addition to their skewers. However to look at the offerings for an individual as all you care to eat of skewers and the chicken would not be appropriate, IMHO. I'm sure you would not get any push back from Disney if those that order the skewers ate chicken, as well!

Ranch beans without a form of pork as a flavor base would be very unusual and not taste right to the average person. I checked Disneyland's website and confirmed that the only thing considered vegetarian / vegan at Big Thunder Ranch Barbecue would be the skewers. The CM (above) assumed it was vegetarian because it didn't contain visible pieces of meat.

It would typically be some sort of salt pork. I don't make it myself, but I've bought canned beans and many have noticeable pieces of pork fat.

Thank you, I learned something. I did go to the Disney website and found this info:
How do I cancel a dining reservation at the Disneyland Resort?

You can cancel your dining reservations online or by calling (714) 781-DINE or (714) 781-3463. Guests under 18 years of age must have parent or guardian permission to call.

All restaurants offering reservations charge a fee for cancellations or no shows. Each restaurant at the Disneyland Resort maintains its own cancellation policy, so be sure to check the policy when making your reservation.

For more information, please refer to the cancellation policy provided in your email confirmation.

So I, my mom, and my kids would all LOVE the all-you-can-eat option at Thunder Mountain; but my husband and his brother and sister-in-law don't eat pork. If this just meant they'd skip the ribs and load up on chicken, while eating everything else, that would work fine; but if it meant they couldn't eat the beans, either, I worry that it wouldn't really be fair to them.

I've tried reaching out to the Special Diets Team to find out the answer to this question, but got the following response: "Due to the volume of meals we serve, we are unable to provide ingredients for
menu items in advance; however we encourage you to speak with your server so they may assist with providing you with the information you have requested."

So I turn to the all-knowing members of the DIS board - does anyone know if the Big Thunder Mountain BBQ ranch beans contain pork? and/or is it possible to get a vegetarian serving of beans?

The beans are pork free. My hubs and I eat here all the time and have never had trouble getting my special requests granted. They can bring you a veggie plate no problem just request it right away at seating as it takes longer to prep. I would also advise hitting the lunch time as it comes with chicken, ribs, beans, slaw, bread and rinks. The dinner service adds sausage and corn. If you have many peeps who do not eat pork then the extras at dinner are not worth it. We've also been able to get items in separate buckets if needed. When we order the veggie option they still bring the bucket of meat for the hubs...no issues.

Thanks, everyone! - I think I will go with the "make a reservation for late in the trip" plan, checking in with the chef earlier in the week... and stop worrying about it now, months in advance! (Of course, if I didn't spend my time worrying about teeny-tiny Disneyland details, what would I do with my day???)
