Big Thunder introduced in 1980???????

That's what it says in a timeline in Birnbaum's book. I could have sworn I rode that back in the early 70's when I went to Disney as a child. I remember calling it the runaway mine ride. Have I lost my mind???

BTMRR was dedicated in November 1980, according to 'Since The World Began' by Jeff Kurtti, the WDW 25th anniversary publication.

The MK didn't even have a coaster until Space Mountain opened in 75.

Great Adventure has a "Runaway Train" ride in NJ (and probably other parks as well). Could it be you were thinking of that ride?

We also went to Six Flags Over Ga. on one of our trips to Disney. Maybe they have a runaway mine ride. But I really thought for sure it was Disney all these years....

Six Flags in Atlanta does have the Dahlonega Mine Train. That might be what you're thinking of. Good ride, too, though!

You know...the first time I went was in the mid to late 70's & I could have swore I rode it also and that I remember it also being called the Runaway Mine or Runaway Train. The reason I remember that is because for some reason my dad didn't go with us that year...just my mom, sister & I...my mom doesn't ride roller coasters and we made her ride that one. We still make fun of her to this day because of it. I can still picture her hair blowing straight back ....so I think you are right! I have never been to another theme park near there...other then Busch Gardens before it was a real theme park and then Worlds of Fun in KC, Missouri..& I know they didn't have a runaway mine/train ride.

I know the Six Flags in Texas has a ride called "The runaway mine train."

BTMRR at the MK opened in 1980. Have u ridden BTMRR at Disneyland perhaps.It opened Dland before the MK.

There was another train ride at DL before Thunder Mountain - though I don't think it was quite as fast. I remember riding it when I was there in the 70's also (along with other long-gone attractions - like Adventures in Inner Space). Guess I'm dating myself!

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at WDW opened on September 23, 1980.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disneyland opened on September 2, 1979.

If you traveled to either park before then you DID NOT ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
