Big Thunder BBQ - Reservation Required

Those desserts sound amazing. I am definitely going to convince my group to try them when we go on Sunday!!

Good luck keeping room for dessert. We have eaten there twice, both times the meat defeated us and we had to retreat dessertless. So wanted the s'mores bake too...

I'm jealous/sad/mad I only got to eat there once. Was really looking forward to it on our next trip until Star Wars ruined everything.

Sorry, dude, your trolling game is off. I seriously doubt anyone will believe that you are upset because an entire land with major attractions based on the most successful film franchise of all time is replacing a goat pen and a moderately popular restaurant. #NotBuyingIt

While I am looking forward to Star Wars land I am also really sad at some of the choices Disney made here. We've only been to BTRBBQ once too and we won't make it back before they close. We're really unhappy about the petting zoo, not so much because of the interactive experience but because of what removing it means in terms of quality of care for the horses. Disney is doing away with the thing that has allowed them to provide an excellent standard of concern for the well-being of those horses.

I have it on pretty good authority that the care of the horses won't decline. They will be moved off site, and shuttled to work, much as they are now. (Except for 1 who needs extra stretching, all are trailered to the front of the park.)

That said, I will be one who will miss the "goat pen and moderately popular restaurant." I really don't believe SWL belongs where they are putting it.

Here's my concern about the quality of care- Currently the CM on duty with a horse on Main Street can pull that animal out of rotation at their discretion, take them back to BTR and carry on with a different horse. It means if a given animal is feeling spooky or stressed they get a break pretty much automatically when they need it. When you move them off-site it makes swapping out a much bigger chore. Making it a bigger deal means more pressure on the CMs to make the call to keep a horse at work instead of pulling them- or it means that when they get twitchy, instead of being take back to the ranch to chill, they're taken back to a trailer. Their overnight care won't decline, but I worry about the park hours working conditions and breaks. The BTR was part of maintaining a high standard of living for the animals an I have trouble seeing it as a non-issue.

There is a big difference between saying you will miss the restaurant and that SWL should have been located elsewhere on the one hand, and saying that you are "bitter" because SWL "ruined everything" on the other. Lots of people will miss the goats, just like I'm sure lots of people miss the mule ride from decades ago. But that hardly means that Disneyland is now completely ruined.

Calm down there cowboy. Obviously I was being hyperbolic. But, yes, I would rather eat at BTBBQ on my next trip and all trips following over going to Star Wars Land. You can choose to believe that or not but not everyone is obsessed with Star Wars. I would watch a western every day of the week and twice on Sunday before watching Star Wars so I prefer Frontierland and would be one of the few people that would love twice as much Frontierland. And while "ruined everything" is obviously an exaggeration, my next trip will be without BTBBQ, the train, Rivers of America, and will likely have huge construction walls up on the whole Frontierland/New Orleans Square/Critter Country hub. So, yes, it's a big deal for someone who is not excited about an even completed Star Wars Land.

There maybe hope that at least some of the food from the BBQ is going to show up at the RBT! The Parks Blog justed posted a piece (New Dining Experiences Coming to River Belle Terrace and Rancho del Zocalo Restaurante at Disneyland Park) which says:

If I'm understanding the blog post correctly, does this mean RBT will no longer serve breakfast? That's a big change! I guess I should make a stop there for my usual Mark Twain once per trip when I go this weekend...

That's what it sounds like! Seems as if some of the items (Mickey pancakes) will move to Rancho. Makes sense they won't serve breakfast if it's becoming TS. They will need to revamp the whole inside (the serving area will go away and they will need new seating). At least the pancakes aren't going completely away! LOL

We enjoy the food. And we had both of the holiday cookie bakes. One is a brownie base, with peppermint ice cream and chocolate sauce. Everyone liked it. The other is the sugar cookie base, with pumpkin ice cream and orange spice and caramel sauce. Despite being stuffed, everyone had more of this. We polished it off fast!

I hope they have other dessert options, too. My DH is super picky and doesn't like peppermint or pumpkin. :)

Looking forward to our reservation in December!

Your point of view may yet turn out to be correct, much the same way that people who preferred the old parking lot to a second gate turned out to be correct when DCA 1.0 opened. But I'm hopeful that when the construction is done you will be able to continue enjoying DLR, including the shorter lines created by the fact that all other visitors to the parks are cramming into Star Wars Land.

They usually also have a s'mores bake (brownie with marshmallow, graham crackers and hot fudge)!

Yeah, it sounds like RBT will stop serving breakfast. I'm also curious to see what they'll do about seating and the indoor areas of the restaurant. The Rancho menu sounds like it'll be a mixture of some items from RBT and some new items.

I personally do not like pumpkin, but this was just so good.

They also have a chocolate chip cookie bake with vanilla ice cream. They have the S'mores bake, which I also love. And they have a fruit cobbler with vanilla ice cream.

They say these serve "2 or more". We ordered 2, and it served 10. Also, it takes 25-30 mins to make so order it early if you want it.

Finally had lunch on Monday and so glad I got to experience it at least once. The BBQ was really as good as everyone said it was, I like my BBQ a little sweet and this had the right amount of sweetness. This was the only meal we had all day and I wasn't even hungry at dinner time. Hopefully the BBQ at RBT will be the same recipe.

Between this and seeing Aladdin four times over the course of the weekend, I'm a bit sad that things we took for granted all these years will be leaving DLR.
