Big scare, and now I can't sleep

In all the years DH has been deployed, this is the first time I've had to call 911. I was just about asleep and a noise woke me up. I didn't hear it again so I thought it was my imagination. A while later I thought I heard the walk out basement door open. I waited but didn't hear anything, so I got up and called the dog to go downstairs with me. He didn't seem bothered by anything while we were downstairs so I again thought it was my imagination.

I didn't go to the basement, but I made sure all the doors were locked on the main floor. As I was about to go back upstairs I heard the basement door slam. I grabbed the phone and ran to DD's room dialing 911. I was so scared. The dispatch had to put me through to the local police and that woman stayed on the line with me until the cars arrived. They went straight to the back. Then they came to the door. It was nothing. The door to the outside storage room was open and had slammed in the wind.

I have never been so happy to feel foolish.

I'm glad it was nothing. My husband travels for business and one night something was banging outside our (outside) bedroom door. I was scared to death thinking someone was trying to get in our house. I had the phone in one hand and a gun in the other. It turned out to be an armadillo banging around under our deck .

Don't feel foolish. I am a 9-1-1 police dispatcher. I have had 2 similar calls tonight. That's what we are here for!

When my dh use to deploy.. many moons ago, I used to leave the radio or tv on... bad habit for me, but it got me thru the night

Hang in there honey, I know how scary hearing those noises can be. I'm glad you called 911, the cops would much MUCH rather come out and investigate nothing than have to investigate something, yknow? I worked as a dispatcher between high school adn the military, so I can't tell you how many calls we got from scared homeowners. It's always such a relief to know nothing's going on.

A suggestion, if I may. This helps me when I'm home alone and freaking out. If you can set up buckets or big tin cans (think paint cans) on the inside of the door, you might get a little peace of mind. The only way they'll knock over is if someone opens it, and that way you know if someone's coming in. I do this when DH has to work nights or is TDY. Even I (being through combat and everything) get scared at night (not to say I'm better than you, sorry if it came out that way), so don't feel foolish at all! Your pup will know if somethings going on, and the vast majority of the time just hearing a larger dog bark (or any size) will run someone off!

The dispatcher was a sweetheart, and the officers were very nice. I apologized for the false alarm, but they assured me it was OK.

Ho scary! My DH is deployed as well and I checked everything about 5 times before I go to bed. The dog sleeps with me every night as well! I am glad everything was okay... I would've called 911 too!

Don't feel bad! I have called 911 twice in my lifetime..both when the ex was deployed.

We had just moved to NC, here about a month, when he was deployed the first time. I had put all the kids to bed and kept hearing a noise. I, like you, thought it was my imagination. Kept hearing it and finally called. I was so embarrassed! There was a door attached to the house that went into a little storage shed. Evidently the kids left it open. While making my rounds, I shut it when I was outside. I evidently shut in the biggest possum I have ever seen in my life. He was trying to get back out and scratching the door etc. Thankfully the two nice policemen did not laugh at me but they did say something along the lines of make sure I put a lock on the door so the kids couldn't let critters in anymore.

It happens. When the spouse is deployed we are stretched to the max. Its better to be safe than sorry in my book!

Your pup will know if somethings going on, and the vast majority of the time just hearing a larger dog bark (or any size) will run someone off!

Good suggestions about the cans. It's still a question what my dog will do in an emergency. He might bark, or he might roll over and asked to have his belly scratched.

That's happened to me before, but there really was someone lurking around in my outer foyer. I saw a dark figure fumbling around with my door - I had the phone in my hand to call 911. I turned on the outer light and he took off. I called my DH (my boyfriend at the time) and he came over - but I had a hard time sleeping the rest of the night. Definitely scary.

I called 911 once when my husband was gone. It was late on a Friday night and some guy was pounding and banging on my front door. It scared me to death! Called the police but the guy was long gone.

They were totally understanding and nice about it, but did gently remind me that all the buildings in the complex looked exactly the same. The guy was more than likely drunk and trying to get in the wrong door.

That explanation made perfect sense, but I was still uneasy for a few days.
