QUESTION: Where was # 1 son at Easter? Was that explained? Bill & Barb's Kid.

Good question. I didn't even notice he wasn't there until you mentioned it. Everyone else was there, that's for sure!!! :teeth:

I guess you would have to withdrawl emotion or not get emotional with sharing a husband & then your children. HOw about all those ladys in the house with Roman. Was that wierd & scary?
Yeah, I suppose so...but it is just strange how the idea is to have a huge family, with all of the Christian values, etc. But then, no one is really all that close and they all seem ready to stab each other in the back...

Roman and all of his wives are just creepy...especially the youngest one. She almost seems demonic...

In the case of Roman & the compound families they are the horror of the Polygamy life & why I assume it was outlawed. The abuse of the young children & teenagers. Old men are stealing girls.

Bill asked his father why did you kick me off the compound at 14. His father answers something like this. So we old men can have the young girls. I read that on the HBO episode blog.

Some people have such abuse in childhood it is amazing they function at all. Some are so damaged they are like the living dead. They make "Bad Choices"
in our minds but its NORMAL for them.

Interesting to note that the people who are the most 'feeling' are those who were not raised in that 'compound' atmosphere, like Barb and Margene, for example.

I also have to say, as interesting as the 'juggling sex with 3 wives' is, I hope they do not keep that as one of the main focuses of the show. I mean, there is so much more to this than the sex angle. It's obviously the beginning, so time will tell where they go with it.

I don't know about removing the "juggling act" from the show. That angle seems to provide fodder for angst between the wives.

I hadn't realized that Ben wasn't at the Easter table. Hmm. That has to mean something. There is a woman at work who is so much like Bill's mother. She looks like her and even dresses like her! Behind her back, people call her, "Mrs. Roper." For me, at least, it makes her character more interesting because I associate my coworker with her. :teeth:

Was there any symbolism at the end of the Easter show with the dog sitting in the backyard? It was an odd way to end the show and there is symbolism with everything else that they do, so I thought maybe there was with the dog.

the thing with the sex is it's an easy way to keep track of who is the favorite. It's kind of funny because these are busy women with tons of kids and responsibilities. Any other time they'd be too tired for sex. But they want to say they had their turn. I just find the thought of him doing it with them and her and then her creepy.

I think the sex thing is also a way to convey to viewers the complications of having multiple wives with multiple expectations. Obviously we can see that just paying and caring for multiple wives and many children would be a juggling act, but the writers seem to want to convey all the problems of polygamy through the expectation of sex by the wives. It's somehow symbolic of their needs for attention from Bill. It's also a heck of an arguement against polygamy because if the average guy thinks "hey three women, wouldn't that be great" the writers are saying it's not all its craked up to be.

I guess what I meant, more than anything, was that I hope they broaden that beyond just sex...there are so many other reasons they will vie for his attention. So many other ways women want their husbands time and attention. I just hope they explore all of the possibilities instead of making it so much about who sleeps with who and who is getting some...kwim? Sex is just the tip of the iceberg here.

That is what I really like about this show, the different dynamics and angles to this sort of lifestyle. I can't wait to see how they handle real issues between Bill and the different wives. That is obviously going to come up with Nicki and the money issue. I also want to see how they handle privacy...like is anything and everything EVERYONES business?

I see what you mean. I think it will be harder to show how they vye for his time, though, because only Barb is legitimately his wife. He takes her to things that she needs to be at but the others are left at home as his dirty little secret. They only show Margene trying to have a life outside of their little three house compound. Maybe she'll be the one that starts wanting to be represented publicly with a husband. Nikki doesn't seem to ever leave the house except to go to the compound or to the grocery store.

I still think that the whole thing with all of the kids having the Henrickson last name will come back to bite Bill in the butt when Wayne goes to school. How is it that their mother has the last name Grant, and is supposedly a single mother but they have the same name as her next door neighbor? And, a high-profile person, at that!

It also seems that while they want some sort of privacy, everything is exposed to the other wives, so they don't have anything that is just between them. In one of the first episodes, Bill was using the same intimate talk with 2 wives. Margene got mad because that was supposed to be "their" lines that he was using with Nikki, I think. Plus, it was in Margie's bed! Nope, I can't see secrets being kept for too long. It'll only be a matter of time until someone discovers Nikki's BCPs when they are looking for something else in her bathroom.

And his being so perfectly white, considering were he lives and then the dirt of the H's back yard....

Maybe symbolizing how the show (everyone and everything in it) is so polarized/opposite? ie...Bill is a taker, his wives are givers. Barb wants a monogomist relationship, but has a polygomist one?...et c.

Does Barb want a monogamist relationship. Can anyone tell me how she came to Marry Bill if she was not from Juniper Creek. I only started watching 2 shows ago. I did read the HBO blog to catch up.

Hey, I thought of another thing that left me scratching my head...does anyone remember when Roman sent Alby on a road trip and he picked up the guy outside of the grocery store and took him back to a motel room? And then when the guy came on to him he started banging his head against the wall, acting crazy. What was that all about?

They met in college, University of Utah, according to the HBO Big Love website.

I think that Barb only agreed to the polygamist lifestyle b/c she had cancer and thought she was going to die and wanted someone to take care of Bill and the kids. Nicky was sent to help Bill out during her illness ... and that's how I think the ball got rolling.

Another thing that I remember my DH saying (from one of the earlier episodes)...they were all carrying dinner outside to the table and my DH said to me, "3 wives cooking dinner and they are eating tater tots?"

After smacking him for the comment, I had to laugh...it was a good point.

I think it's a repressed desire. But someone else pointed out that he was all smiles as soon as the guy left (I don't recall). Or maybe Roman doesn't just fancy the ladies?

Really! Did they show this? So does Barb have a mother?

No, they didn't show any of how Bill and Barb met but maybe they're saving it for "flashback" scenes. The info. re. university was from the HBO Big Love website. The info. re. Barb's illness has been discussed on Big Love in a conversation between Barb and Rhonda (Roman's child-bride) as well as the Nicky-Barb car fight. We were told that Nicky came to help Bill and the kids while Barb was sick. Nicky said something to Barb about taking care of her, praying for her, watching her breathe and Barb said something to the effect of maybe she [Barb] should have died.

As far as Barb's mother ... her name is listed in the relationships portion of Barb's character bio (Barb's maiden name is Dutton) but it's not highlighted, so the character has not been introduced as of yet. Maybe in an upcoming episode?

What about Bill opening the bedroom door to talk to his mother and the
sink-peeing father was in the bed with her?????

Yup, I think Alby is in the closet. I think he's torn apart between who he really is and how his religion feels about homosexuality. I think this is going to be a really good storyline. Maybe he'll be booted from the compound and join forces with Bill to take Roman down?

HBO is showing 3 episodes tonight. pirate: princess: princess: princess:
