I'm lost and I can't get the search function to work, so I'm sorry if this is answered somewhere in the thousands of previous threads.

What is the big deal about picking a home resort? Do you get discounts for staying there or priority booking?

Also, for the FAQ thread, can someone put in a list of what most the acronyms used in messages stand for? It took me a while to figure out what SSR stood for in all the messages, especially since the resort is not listed on the DVC web page. :D

Welcome to the DIS.

DVC Members can make reservations at their Home Resort 11 months in advance. Members may reserve at non-home resorts beginning at 7 months. The Home Resort priority can be important for some types of rooms year round and for some times of the year for any/all room types.

We have a description of commonly found abbreviations already on the site.

SSR information is available on the Member's website, but not much information is available for the general public at this time, except right on this forum.

Enjoy!

Thanks Doc! Fast and a dead on answer.

One last question, is there a list and rates for non DVC locations that we can trade points for?

Love the site, tons of good info!

www.dvcmember.com

you memberbook has the ID and password in it (this is really silly - once you find what they are - I am sure you will agree)

DVC won't allow it to posted on this site.

Hi,

Welcome to disboards & DVC! 1. You have to choose a home resort (for your deed). You get an 11 month priorty there. You can book 11 months from you check out date. For ex: I usually go on vacation in May. So say I wanted to leave WDW on may 8th 2005, I could book it on June 8th 2004. All other DVC (Disney Vacation Club) resorts its 7 months from your check out date. There 20are discounts with your membership (some dining, Ultimate Park Hopper, things like that. So you always want to carry your membership card with you.

As for the shorthand:
BCV: Beach Club Villas, my home resort
BWV: Boardwalk Villas
WLV: Willderness Lodge Villas
OKW: Old Key West
HH or HHI: Disney Hilton Head Resort
Vero Beach: Usually just Vero
SSR: Sarasota Springs Resort sorry I can't spell.
DW: Dear Wife
DH: Dear Husband
DD: Dear Daughter
DS: Dear Son
That should help. I hope it does.

Thanks Spiceycat & Tinkgrl for the tips. Is there anyway to see the list of other properties that we can use DVC points at besides Disney properties BEFORE we purchase? I wonder why they keep it secret.....

They don't keep it secret. If you're interested, contact DVC and they will send you materials. Make sure you ask about the other properties. FWIW, I don't think it's "worth it" to use my points outside of the DVC resorts. The point structure is such that I would be spending more points to stay in a regular room somewhere than a studio or 1BR at a DVC resort.
