Biergarten Seating

Every time we have been to the Biergarten we have had the strangest people to sit with and after this summer's trip we are NEVER going back to eat there again!!!!! Its a shame because we love the food but the company tends to be on the idiot side more times than not.

The Biergarten has the seating it does because that is the way restaurants seat people in Germany. You sit down with your companion directly across from you and by the end of the meal, he could be three people down and across the table from you.

Americans are guarded about their personal space. We don't offer for strangers to sit with us even in a crowded food court when we have available seats. We just watch them circle looking for a place to sit while their food gets cold.
Very true about the seating. Space is at a premium in most of the rest of the world and we cannot afford to let tables and seats go empty. However in Germany we nod, acknowledge the person, and then we mind our own business. We tend to be much more reserved than Americans so it is odd how Americans don't want to share a table or a ride car with strangers, but want to talk at meals!

In fact, I was a little taken aback a few weeks ago; I was having dinner with friends in my local village Biergarten (the real one in Bavaria) and a downpour started. We moved under a tree, and ended up sitting with two men; we were the only ones brave enough not to move indoors. In that situation there was some camaraderie and they did start a conversation, but in normal events that would not occur.

OP, I'll sit next to you at Biergarten if you would like, and I promise not to touch your food.... :snooty:

I did however sneeze all over the items in your parcel before I packed them earlier today. Consider yourself warned ;)

Thanks for the heads up on the sneeze thing! Aww, who am I kidding, we both know I'm gonna eat what's in that package anyway!

You, my friend, are welcome to sit at my table anytime, communal or not.

BTW, that little pork cutlet thing and the potato salad stuff were wonderful!
