Beware UPromise, just to be safe

I have had a UPromise Account for years- it's the ONLY place online that stores my bank debit card information. I use a rewards credit card for all transactions, so I only use my debit card once every few months.

That's how I know that UPromise may have been compromised in some way- someone got my debit card number (it's a debit MasterCard) and has been charging up a storm. They used Yahoo Wallet (no idea what that is, I'm thinking it's like Google Checkout, which I've heard of but have never used) to get things from several companies, all of which are Upromise member sites.

I've removed all my cards from their site and am calling to close my account tomorrow (I'm on HST) and they are not open yet.

It's a shame, I think it is a great service, but I know it was them. Just be careful everyone!

Oh no! Thanks for the tip. I hope things get squared away.

Interesting...my parents told me there credit card number got stolen and someone tried to make a big purchase online. They were scratching their heads as to where someone could get it, but I know they had it on Upromise to help the grandkids. Thanks for the heads up!

I'm sorry this happened to you, but keep in mind that just because its the only place you had your data online doesn't necessarily mean that's how it happened.

Even though you don't use the card much, it could be anywhere you've ever used the card, your bank...My has never even been online, and it happened to her.

Hope things get squared away. :)

Interesting! I had my cc number stolen back in November. I don't know where from but UPromise is a possibility. I will have to look into it. Does anyone know where there offices are? I received a letter from a sheriff's department in two different states so I may be able to track it down.

I recently had activity on my debit card, turned out that a local atm had been compromised and they obtained my number that way. It can happen in any way, thanks for the heads up though, I'll keep an eye out.
I once had someone take the numbers off a check I wrote at Toys R Us (an employee) who then ordered checks in their name and began going shop happy. That was years ago and they got caught but what a pain in the butt that was!!! Oh my gosh, it was before you could see check images or even check your account online daily. What a nightmare.

Thanks for the heads up! I only have one credit card linked to Upromise and I was thinking of adding my husband's card that he uses for business but NO WAY if they are having problems. Luckily since I'm trying to be debt free in 2007 I don't use the one card that much so I should be able to keep a good eye to see if there is any unauthorized charges! But I agree with the other posters that your information can be stolen anywhere. We had our cc info stolen years ago after a trip to Disney. I don't know where or how they got it but they bought about $200 worth of CDs from Columbia house and also made a couple of timeshare payments. Luckily our card company took care of reversing all the charges and we haven't had a problem since.
