DW and I were on the 8/29 sailing of the Wonder last week and had a WONDERful time. The weather was great we had a very enjoyable time.

There were many great memories with my DW just enjoying the time with each other, the beautiful ship and everything I can think of. There was only one thing that happened during the cruise that was disappointing that I thought I would share a so that others would not have the same experience.

This was our 6th Disney cruise. A few sailings ago, my wife saw an item that she really liked and wanted to bid on. It was the Captain's Hat. We had tried to get it a last September and were outbid, no big deal. The hat wasn't available one the 10th Anniversary Sailing in April earlier this year, but it was there last week. We waited until Saturday night at about 7:50 to put a bid in (the bidding closes at 8:00). We stayed around hoping that no one would bid, but if they did we would be there to up the bid. At about 7:58, a person picked up the clip board and moved to the other end of the table. The person held the board and kept asking the CM over and over what time the bidding ended. The person was basically playing games and kept asking so that the time would expire and no one else would be able to bid. Finally the CM said that the person needed to complete the bid and put the clip board down. Again the individual kept holding it until the CM took it and placed it back down on the table. I picked it up to bid, started writing and the CM told me that time was up and I could not complete my bid. To say the least DW and I were not pleased with how it was handled and how this person was playing games. As the old saying goes, "If you don't have anything good to say don't say anything" so we walked away without a word. My DW was very upset by what this individual did. I think more important was that it was in front of this person's teenage child. It did not set a good example for the child and sent the wrong message on how to get what you want.

We hope that we will have an opportunity again and I know that if we do, we will act more mature and responsibly in front of our children. At least I have a conscience and won't feel ashamed of how I handled myself.

It is rather disappointing that the CM allowed that other passenger's gamesmanship to have its desired effect.

Kevin,

I know how you feel! LOL Remember that happened to me last September and now we only have Scotts chair!

DCL-FAN, visit this, the last page of a Wonder cruise journal I did HERE. About halfway down the page I tell about my captain's hat incident.

Kevin - So glad you and Sue had a really great cruise except for this unfortunate situation. That person was nothing more than a cheater!!! I hate it when nice guys finish last. :(

Dan - I never did hear the story about the auction and Scott's chair.....

Well I hate to tbe the dissenter here but....

1) If you had bid a high enough amount then the person coming in right before the close of auction would not have been able to snipe you.

2) Since this was not the case, I would have gone up to the person and asked if they were done with the clipboard and placed a final bid. I would not waited around while they hung on to it for dear life. I'm sure the presence of the CM would have ensured that you received the clipboard.

My friend just got off the Magic on Saturday and he was telling me of a simililar incident last week onboard the Magic. Someone was holding onto the clipboard until the very end...I am not sure what item it was for.

Well I guess you had to be there to understand how it happened! I did ask for the clip board! Thanks for the insight...it is always great to see how the armchair quarter back would have handled the situation!

I really think you should write a letter. I generally agree that it is more polite not to make a stink, but in this instance, it was not just the other passenger's behavior that was questionable, but the CM's as well. If this is happening often, then DCL needs to revise its procedures with respect to these auctions.

"it is always great to see how the armchair quarter back would have handled the situation!"

What armchair quarterback?

Let's put it this way.......

You picked up the board to bid more money on the item right? That means that you had to have been more than willing to spend more money for the item.

Perhaps, rather than waiting to see if you could have gotten it for less (which is what you were doing-whether you agree or not), you should have bid the absolute highest price that you would have been willing to spend. Perhaps that would have been more than that person would have been willing to spend and you would have won the item.

That is what I do in situations on eBay. I bid what I want to spend.

And I certainly don't complain about it if someone comes along and outbids me at the last minute. I may be frustrated if they do but at least I know that I wouldn't have spent more money on the item.

Why be upset with them because you did not bid enough?

For those of you who aren't happy with the auction process, perhaps you should tell DCL that. Certainly it sounds like changing the auction process would bring them more revenue since people are willing to bid against each other for these items. If this were pointed out to them, perhaps they would make some type of change.

In response to your last statement, I did speak to Guest Services and put it on the survey. I don't have sour grapes about this, it was just how if was handled by the indivudual and the CM. Maybe you have to be a ruthless individual to participate in the DCL Silent Auction. That is not my style.

I am considering writing a letter to DCL. Understand, my main reason for posting was so other people did not get put in the same situation.

As far as what I was willing to bid I chose to start out at the reserve bid with the intention to increase it if someone else put in a higher bid. Sounded reasonable, but that is just me.

Why I would pay more for something if I didn't have to doesn't sound reasonable? I work hard for the money I make, why spend it if I don't have to.

Have a nice day!

A little off subject here but what I am gathering is that you actually see what amount other people are bidding?

Now, along the lines of this why would you bid your highest amount right off the top? What if you are the only person bidding on this item and you put down the maximum amountof money that you would bid - well you just lost money. Yes, these are the chances that you have to take but DCL-Fan went in there with more experience than before and knew the game plan and played by the rules. The other folks didn't and I agree DCL should be made aware of what the CM did in that situation. And for those folks not giving the clipboard to them is just wrong.

I agree with you. Unlike Ebay, you must pay what you bid (not just more than anyone else has bid). It is a poor strategy in a silent auction to immediately bid your highest price.

year2late - I agree with you, this is the way I bid on EBay, however I believe that is totally different then at the silent auction they have on the DCL (which I have never been a part of).

I think it was completely WRONG of the other folks to hold onto the clipboard for the amount of time that they did knowing others wanted to bid on the item. When you are bidding on an item on EBay you don't know how many people are waiting until the last minute to bid on the same item and that is the chance you are taking. See them in person and not giving them the option to bid over you (in this type of auction) is just wrong - IMHO.

"Why I would pay more for something if I didn't have to doesn't sound reasonable?"

But you would have to pay more in order to win the item, right? And you were willing to right? So why not have spent it at the outset to ensure that you would win?

"I work hard for the money I make, why spend it if I don't have to."

Then you should be grateful that you weren't more insistent in your efforts to have the woman relinquish the clipboard. It looks as though you got to save some of that hard earned money.

"Have a nice day!"

You too!!

Ripleysmom,

You seem to know it all, but never did get the message I was sending, so let's just agree to disagree! First, my message was let others know what to watch for. Second, it wasn't about me, it wasn't about the auction, it wasn't about the hat, it was the principle and the example the person set for his child.

P.S. I never said it was a woman! Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't!

I don't want to get into hot water here, I manage to do enough of that with the dress code debate:p but I believe the basic idea of an auction is to start bidding low, working up to your highest bid. I takes the fun out of bidding if you jump right in at your highest price. The issue is that the CM that was monitoring the auction should have been more on the ball and not allowed one person to "hog" the bid sheet for any one item. All bid sheets should remain on the table and not be taken and held onto.

I probably would not have made a stink at the time either:confused: but I definetly agree that the guest was very rude and the CM was wrong to have allowed this to happen.

No flames please!!;)

DCL Fan,

Thank you for letting other considerate DISers know about the games people play while bidding! Remember the person that did this to us last year was also a DISer and went to another board to brag about her accomplishments. Perhaps ripleysmom is close to this situation!

Again thanks for the heads up-from one considerate thoughtfull DISer to another!

Tell Sue and the kids hello.
