Beware of "Market Price" - Ruth's Chris - vent

Wow. I wouldn't go back either. You should have received better service.

I also would NEVER order something at market price if someone else was treating. As my Mother would say "It just isn't proper."

We have been to Ruth's Chris in Philadelphia nad enjoyed it very much.

For what it is worth- I wouldn't order "market price" if someone else is picking up the tab.

If I am paying the tab, and want to order somethign "market price", I always ask what market price is before making my decision. (maybe your guest should have asked first the price, before ordering....but than again...they still might have ordered it anyway)

I have eaten at RC several times over the years, always steak, always good. I do have to say that a guest should not, IMO, order a market price item.
Ditto. Eaten at RC's and always had wonderful meals. Loved their lettuce wedge which has always been fresh and crisp. Steaks cooked to perfection and served sizzling.

However, as a guest, I never order anything listed as "market price." That's just rude, but then I've been with people who've done just that. To me, it just seems like one is taking advantage of the host/hostess. (Heck, even when I'm paying, I don't order anything that's "market price." I doubt my heart would withstand the sticker shock!)

DH and I were at a similar restaurant in Philadelphia on Christmas Eve. When the waiter was going over the menu, he said something about the lobster being market price, $23. I said okay, well, I guess we will pass on the lobster. I ended up just going for the lobster tail.

The one and only time I ever set foot in Ruth's Chris was when DH took me there for a special date. I was wearing makeup & stylish walking shorts with dressy sandals. The (youngish) host looked me up and down and said there were no tables available, but there was room at the bar. I told her there clearly were tables available, I could see them! She replied,"You can sit at the bar or leave. I'm not seating someone wearing shorts with all the other customers." I do not sit in, on, or near a bar. :snooty: I took my shorts and we left. I wouldn't return if they gave me a $100 lobster.

Wow! They would have had to call an ambulance to take me out of there!

And I can't believe that your woman friend would order something like that without inquiring about the cost.. That's pretty rude in my book.. :earseek:

No kidding! :earseek: When I treat one of the sisters to McDonalds, I start to panic when they say "super size it" :earseek: :earseek:

Resteraunt here in Miami called: Joe's Stone Crabs......I went ONE time a few years back, and was NOT impressed! :confused3 Not for $250.00 for 3 people! :rolleyes1 I KNOW not to order ANYTHING that states Market Price! ;)

we have been to RC several times and I have never been impressed.

Although I don't think it is up to the server to inform you of the market price unless you ask...at least any finer restaurant we have been to we have never been "informed" unless we ask.

Reminds me of the old adage... "if you have to ask..."

WOW that is crazy...I have to agree wtih many others and say that I would never order something market price when someone else is treating me to dinner.

I have always enjoyed RC and have recieved great service there over the years (we always request the same waitress though). The hash browns there are to die for and the sound of the steak sizzling in butter when it comes out is always nice too.

You're paying for the name. Your local mom and pop steakhouse can give you a comparable cut of meat for a fraction of what RC charges. And probably with better service too! And as a guest, my parent instilled instinct is to order the cheapest thing on the menu! While I have gotten over that, I still would never order a "unknown" price entree when someone else is paying. I don't care how good friends we are. It's tacky.

Obviously, I've never eaten at a place like this because I've never heard of "market price" until reading this thread. LOL! If it were me out with friends, I wouldn't order the most expensive thing on the menu. But as a host, I would be prepared for guests to order anything they want.

I'm sure the lobster was decent or even great, but if I wanted lobster, I think I'd go to a seafood restaurant as opposed to RC. My former boss recently went to RC for the first time. He said it was the best steak he's ever had! Maybe you need to go to the one in Virginia Beach. ;)

::yes::

The last time I ate there (years ago), there were 8 of us, and (with alcohol), the bill came to over $1800 before tip (and yes, someone ordered the lobster :-))-- fortunately, it was a business dinner, so we didn't have to pay!

After that, a per person limit was put on business dinners :-)

No comment on the service because Ruth Chris Steak restaurants will of course vary, restaurant to restaurant and city to city. One thing is a constant however, they do serve Prime beef. Most restaurants do not. The Yachtsman Steak House used to sell prime beef when they first opened but they switched to choice several years ago and have not switched back. I believe Morton's also serves prime. And to weigh in on the guest that ordered the most expensive thing on the menu; NOT NICE!

Even though most of the comments here are negative, I am now drooling for a Ruth Chris filet. ::yes:: We have been about 4 times & I have always been impressed with the food & service. However, $100 for a lobster? :faint: That's just crazy! I would stick with the $30-40 steak for sure, even if someone else was picking up the tab. Unless I knew they were millionaires or something...

I love our local steakhouse and frequent it as often as we can afford to, but it is nothing close to Ruth's Chris. The NY Strip there is a mere shadow of one I could get at Yachtsmans at Disney and that's nothing like the ones I've enjoyed at RC's. You do get what you pay for and it is much better beef at RC's than at my local steakhouse. Service is better, too (but our local place is usually pretty good).

I only have one question, did the couple know you were treating before ordering? If they did than it was in pretty poor taste of your guest to order something that is market price (without knowing the price), most people know lobster is very expensive. If they didn't know in advance of ordering that you were treating than it is a different story.

I was always taught that you don't order anything more expensive than the person who is treating you, so we always ask before hand, what sounds good to you this evening...then we decide from there.

I ate there once and wasn't impressed, could've been a bad day. I would like to go back, but I suddenly became allergic to seafood this summer :(
