And... I can see Oblio is using TWO flash units to achieve the bounce and direct illumination. Plus - of course - the bracket.

AND - while I'm at it - what do you figure is the power (or guide loss) on using a LS clear (or soft/cloud)? I have a 420EX with a 138 GN.

Hmmm... I have just been looking at the deails on the 550EX and 420EX. It seems the last type I body was the D30... so my 10D and all future DSLR bodies are type 2. Since the 420EX is fully compatible only with the type 1 bodies - this implies that some capabilities with a type 2 body are not fully realized. Maybe I should sell my 420EX and get a 550EX or better/newer?

Dunno, I don't like Canon flash. My preference is Metz 54MZ 4 with GF LS2 diffuser

It will only work if it's in horizontal position, just like if you use an empty baby-powder bottle as a diffuser.

Too many people a missing the main point of Gary Fong diffuser: to take vertical orientation pictures, with flash, minues the side-shadow.
