Beware Kohl's Shipping Packages Reveal Contents!

My daughter's janome hello kitty sewing machine I ordered from overstock was in its original box and my daughter answered the door. I was furious!

Wow, I can see how that would be annoying! However, I received 4 packages from Kohl's in the past week and 2 from Walmart and they were all in plain brown shipping cartons with just the address and some bar codes on the outside and packing list on the inside. Course all these items were for me so no surprises anyway.

Microsoft store did that with my son's Xbox. He kind of knew about it anyway, he's ASD and can't handle surprises, but I didn't want him to have concrete evidence of his present! He beat me home and the box was sitting on the kitchen table when I walked in. I tried to play cool, but he gave me a huge hug and then I noticed the lettering on the box

It's not any retailers responsibility to keep things secret for anybody unless they have guaranteed something like plain brown packaging or only Mrs. Smith can see and sign for it. Being angry over a picture being on a box of something you ordered and asked to be delivered to you house just boggles my mind.

I haven't had that issue with Kohls, but I have been nervous about that. I did almost all my shopping online. I will say when I go on Facebook multiple items I bought for the kids show up as the adds and the kids are like cool mom, that's what I asked Santa for

If you sign out of Amazon each time you're done it will take those ads at least off your facebook feed immediately. It is a pain but helpful! I also put passwords on all devices and made accounts for each kid for the computer. I lock screen on the ipad on whatever app they want to play. All necessary at this time of year, and bonus is that the kids get much less screen time because it takes 4 whole seconds to find me and have me enter a password. I might keep everything locked down permanently.

A friend ordered some type of good frying pan for her husband from Kohls and it was shipped with just the pan part in the box and the handle was poking all the way out the side. It wasn't the actual manufacturer packaging....they actually cut a hole in the box and did it like that on purpose. Her husband carried it in from the porch

Because of this issue, I have been shipping everything to my parents house. Well, they have a weird driveway situation. There is a restaurant at the road (busy street). You go through the parking lot and at the back starts their driveway up to their house (about 100 yards). The driveway actually splits off to their neighbor. But its just the two houses back there. They have lived there almost 10 years and never had a problem getting packages delivered to the house. Every now and then something goes to the neighbor, but no big deal. This year, 50% of the time they just leave the packages sitting on the road next to her mailbox. In front of a busy street/restaurant! Its crazy. She's called 3 times now to UPS and the keep doing it because they can't find the house but they assure her its marked in the system to deliver to the house. I ordered a movie theater style popper for my kids/DH last week and it was in a huge box (with colored pictures). They left it on the street in the rain at 7:30 at night last week. Luckily I was stalking the delivery info and saw it was delivered and she drove down quick and got it, but this is beyond ridiculous!

Received basketball high tops (not a surprise) and a hoodie from Kohl's on Saturday in a plain brown box marked fragile!

The only thing I can think of that I've ever received in the box showing the contents was a tv a few years ago. I wasn't home at the time but at least the UPS guy put it on the wraparound porch behind a bush so you couldn't really see it.

A few things I ordered from Kohl's (like a griddle) didn't even come in a shipping box just the regular box and the FedEx guy wrote our address on it - nice for an item that was supposed to be a gift.

And Dick's is putting their packing slip on the outside of the boxes this year too. Everything I ordered from my DH has been perfectly labeled on the box..Thankfully I get home before he does.

I think part of the problem here is that companies are under a lot of pressure to 'go green!' so they are saving a lot of cardboard and $ by not putting something that is already in a sturdy cardboard box inside of another cardboard box. Thus the problem.

Putting a giant little tykes basketball hoop inside another giant cardboard box is wasteful if you think about it, and really, a logistical nightmare for the warehouse because imagine how many more sizes of boxes they would have to have on hand to stick these giant things into in an effort to hide the name of the outside of the original box.

I agree. It is wasteful and would cost more money. That cost would then be passed on to the consumer in increased prices and/or increased shipping costs. No thank you. I don't want to pay even more just because some people are getting upset over such a small thing.

It isn't just Kohl's or Walmart, many retailers have items shipped from third-party warehouses these days. That's the cost of getting items in a lower price, quick shipping system.

This. I work for a toy company and if you order our products from walmart/kohls/some things from amazon/target/etc, it is actually coming straight from our warehouse. It is more likely going to come from Amazon than any of the others because they are very strict about controlling their orders. The only times we will get the orders from them is when their warehouses have run out of stock of an item. When you check out on Amazon, it will always tell you where it is coming from.

Everything I've ordered online, which is about 90% of what I have bought, I clicked the box that asked is this a gift? So far I've had no items come that weren't properly concealed. In fact, with promo codes on Kohls.com it was actually cheaper for me to have them wrap the gift and send it to me. It was great to pull it out and put it straight under the tree.

Mine came in a thick white bag. All you could see was where it came from.

I agree with the PP that says it is not the store's responsibility. I used to be frustrated when I would order a big item and it came in an even bigger box. It seemed like such a waste. This is the retailer's way to keep costs down, and save the environment. They just can't win. Buying boxes for every electric scooter and Little Tikes basketball hoop would cost them a fortune. And this time of year many retailers are offering free shipping, which I really appreciate.

Maybe the solution is for stores to put something that says "ships in original box" on the item description? I know I have seen that somewhere.. Amazon maybe?

We are lucky to have a great ups guy. He always hides packages that are obvious and leaves a note on the door.

I agree with the PP that says it is not the store's responsibility. I used to be frustrated when I would order a big item and it came in an even bigger box. It seemed like such a waste. Thick white bag is fine. I just don't want hubs present revealed. He knows I'm getting stuff from tons of places so seeing from kohl's itself won't tip him off.
