New to this, actually haven't booked our first DVC stay yet.. our school hasn't released a calendar for next year. I could guess what the fall break week would be it if they release the calendar between our 11 and 7 month mark is there still good availability if I need to move the reservation?
What size room? Fall is a busy DVC time so you may or may not have a difficult time, depending on what you want, how flexible you are in room size/view and how close to 7 months you are,
There will be a big difference in ease at say 10 months vs 8 months.
All you can do is book when you think it might be and then go from there, Biggest piece is know it’s a busy time for DVC and be flexible!
Ok. We own at board walk and looking at past calendars it seems to fall on the second full week of october. This year we fell on the third week. But the first week of october was a short week.

Have you thought to call the schools? They may have a general idea of how they decide? I know the school District I just retired from started the process of the calendar internally months before it went to our Board of Education for approval around February or March.

It looks like the break is always the week that includes Columbus Day. That's a very popular break week, especially for many Southern U.S. school districts. In 2020, Columbus Day is October 12.
If your school district admin office can't help you, my advice is to book the Columbus Day week as soon as the window opens. Then if necessary, adjust when the calendar is issued. Good luck!
The Thursday before Columbus Day to the second weekend after Columbus Day is one of the extremely high DVC demand periods of the year. With BWV, if seeking a studio or 2BR, you should consider it imperative to make your best guess for applicable time you will need and reserve at 11 months out.
In fact, you should assume that it will actually be difficult to reserve a standard view studio or 2BR even right at 8 a.m. at 11 months out. Such a risk of failure is also possible for a boardwalk view studio or 2BR, although those often last a little past 11 months out. Pool/garden view studios or 2BRs usually last longer but by 10 to 9 months out even many days of a week for those may be gone. If you want a studio or 2BR and believe you may have to modify your reservation by a day or two at 10 or fewer months out, you should likely choose the pool/garden view when reserving at 11 months out, because standard and boardwalk views will have a lower probability for being able to do a modification at 10 or 9 months out.
If seeking a 1BR, you will have more time, and a pool/garden view 1BR may even be open at 9 or possibly 8 month out; however, standard 1BRs tend to disappear 10 months out and boardwalk view by 9.
