Better to go on a Sat in June than a grad nite/day? Any good days in June?

Looking ahead to plan our trip next summer (2013) and I'm trying to figure out if there are any good days to go in June between grad nites and AP blockout days. It looks like Grad nites are the same days as the blockouts which means we can't plan for both. From reading other threads, it sounds like grad nites are really crowded days so I'm thinking I should avoid those. I'm wondering what those with more experience think regarding going on a grad nite/day vs. a Saturday where APs are blocked out and there are no grad nites. I was thinking maybe Sat. June 8th, Mon. the 10th, and Tues. 11th for our DL days, hoping that because there are still several non-blocked out S. Cal AP days in June that it won't be super crowded yet. WDYT? Can we do a June trip without huge crowds? If it's going to be miserably crowded we could possibly go end of July/beginning of August but I'm worried about the heat, especially since we will have a 14 mo. old. Also, is there anything scheduled to open next June that might affect us? TIA!

I have found June to be one of the worst times to go to Disneyland. As you point out, you are forced to try to find a few select days the DAPs are not blocked but SoCal are.

Those days that SoCal passes are not blocked, are VERY crowded and should be avoided at all costs.

Thanks, dshimel. Any other thoughts? What about the last week of May? Are crowd levels decent then? If we end up going later in the summer, is there a difference in crowd levels & temps between July & August? Thanks!

Just got back from a week full of grad nights at DL. It really was not too bad and we did not even notice the teens arriving until about 5:00 pm. They were a little rowdy, but most of them just hit the thrill rides. It certainly was not a terrible crowd though they sure weren't low! I would definitely chose a grad night over a saturday, but that was just from my personal experience.

What about a Satuday with block outs like this coming Satuday? Are they still really crowded?

I'll be at DL this weekend as well. Touringplans is only calling for a 5.5 on Saturday and a 4.7 on Sunday. Nothing to be worried about in my mind. Compared to some of the times I have been, it will seem like we have the whole park to ourselves. Especially on Sunday!

I sure hope you are right! It looks like we're both heading out tomorrow. I see you're in Missiouri. I'm in Iowa. Maybe we'll end up on the same connecting flight? We're going DSM to Denver and then on to LAX tomorrow morning? Wouldn't that be a funny coincidence if we both ended up on the same plane from Denver to LAX? :lmao:

General rule of thump. If DAPs are blocked out, it is pretty crowded. DAPs only have 50 block out days, so the days they are blocked are the 50 most crowded days of the year.

On the flip side, if SoCal's are not blocked out, especially in June, then it is going to be very crowded.

So, if you are going next weekend....

Friday, June 1 will be crowded. The SoCal's regular are not blocked out. Selects are, which will help, but there are still a ton of SoCal that will be there getting in one more Firday visit before they are blocked out for 2 months.

Saturday will be better, but will still be quite crowded since the DAP's are blocked out.

Sunday is much better. It won't be "empty" by any means, but still quite crowded.

Monday and Tuesday will be horrid. Those are the last 2 days that the SoCal selects can get in for two and a half months. Ride capacities will be medium, as the park has not yet scaled up to max throughput. I have made the mistake of going on these last SoCal Select days in the past. Never EVER again will I make that mistake. Miserable.

Wed-Fri, 6th-8th will be MUCH, MUCH better.

But, even on very crowded days, there are still things you can do to beat the crowds.

Rules of Disneyland.

1) Even though it sucks getting up early on vacation, you MUST be at Disneyland at opening. On a crowded day, you can get more done in the first 2 hours than you can do in 6 hours late-afternoon.

Saturday is an early entry day, meaning people with 3+ day hoppers or staying at DL hotels are in at 7AM. There will arleady be a line at things in Fantasyland like Pan.

When you arrive, the gates furthest to the left, as you face the park, will be the Early Entry gates. GET in the FURTHEST LEFT non-early entry gate, then watch like a hawk past 7:30ish as they start reducing the number of Early Entry gates... they will flip the signs from Early Entry to Entrance... JUMP with the rest of the crowd into these now regular gates.... They will convert another line every 5 mins or so, and if you are on your toes, you can get VERY close to the front....

Last time I was there, they let us onto Main Street at about 7:45, even though it was Early Entry. Right at 8AM, they release you, and the race is on!

2) The first things to ride are those that are short ride time, but will have the longest waits later in the day. Star Tours, Space Mt., Indiana Jones, Splash Mt.. Avoid things with long ride times (slow rides like Pirates, Mansion, Jungle Cruise, Nemo Subs) until after you have done the short ride-times (coasters).

3) Bogart the FastPasses. You can get another FastPass as soon as the first one is valid to use. As far as I have heard, Disney is still not enforcing end times. I have gotten FPs at 9AM that I have used at 9PM, with no problem. If you get a FP at 8AM with an 8:40 return time, then you can get another FP at 8:40. If you wait until 10AM and get a FP with a 12 noon return time, than you can't get another FP until noon. You can stockpile a lot more FPs when you are getting them every 40 mins than if you are getting them ever 2 hours.

So, my "busy day" touring plan would go something like this....

1) Get FP to Star Tours. (8AM opening, so hopefully an 8:45 return start time)
2) Ride Star Tours. (Should be 10-15 min wait, including post grouping movie and about 5 min ride time)
3) Ride Space Mt. (again, 10-15 min wait and just a few min ride).
4) It should be close, if not time to get your next FP so get Space Mt FP. (9:30-ish return time hopefully).
5) Matterhorn
6) Indy
7) Should be time to get FP, so make it one for Splash Mt FP (Hopefully 10:30 or earlier return time.).
8) Ride Splash Mt.
9) Ride BTMRR.

Should be about 10AM. You have done 6 rides (Star Tours, Space Mt, Matterhorn, Indy, Splash, BTMRR) and have 3 sets of Fast Passes in your pocket. I have actually done this plan in a compressed rush and gotten 8 top rides and 4 FPs, but that requires a non-early entry, uncrowded morning and LOTS of rushing.

At this point you can either park hop to DCA, or if staying in DL, start doing some of the longer ride time rides. Just remember to keep grabbing those FPs as often as you can.

It is very hard to get on Midway Mania with less than 40 min wait. Most of the long wait time rides at DCA (other than Midway Mania) have FP. This park can really chew up a lot of time as the waits are longish for ToT, Screamin, Flight School, Midway, GRR (on hot days), and especially Soarin' (This can take more than 45 mins, even with FP). You can easily spend 45-min to an hour per ride in DCA and be all like... Where did half my day go? And only did 8 things... after doing DCA's top rides)

Afternoon, in DIsneyland, on busy days, you have to do a combination of:
1) Using your FastPasses that you stockpiled in those first 2-3 hours, plus any you pick up later.
2) Longer ride-time, high capacity, shorter wait times (Pirates, Mansion, Nemo Subs, Small World, Jungle Cruise, Mark Twain/Columbia)
3) shorter wait time attractions like Buzz, Fantasyland dark rides (Toad, Snow, Pinnoc, Alice), Tom Sawyer Island, Train, Tea Cups, etc.
4) Shows like Billy Hill, Tiki Room, Parade, the 50th anniversary movie that serves as a pre-show to Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln...

The crowds will linger right through the evening. You may bet a chance at shorter wait times again in those 2 hours after fireworks, but before midnight park closing... however, if you've been in the park since 8AM, good luck with that.

Hope you enjoy your Disney day(s).

I had not noticed that the SoCal can get in on Sunday... yikes. Yeah, in that case, Saturday may actually be better than Sunday.

In prior years that I had been there, all SoCal were blocked on Sunday but not Monday/Tuesday, making Sunday nice, but M/T a nightmare. If the SoCal can get in on Sunday... then yikes.

I won't be flying this time. We are going to be driving cross country. We leave tonight and will be in Anaheim Thursday afternoon.

I have been doing checks on Touringplans for the past couple weeks to see if they are accurate or not. So far the parks have been just about as crowded as predicted. I haven't noticed any days so far that have been way above/below the forecast. I hope that doesn't change....

Oh no, you are scaring me. This time that you have outlined is the entire scope of my trip. I was not anticipating those kinds of crowd levels. I was banking on the 5's and 6s that Touring Plans predicted.

Now Im worried!:scared1:

I was at Disneyland this past Friday which was a grad night and I thought the park was just delightful! It seemed SOO much less busy than I would have anticipated and actually the park seemed much less empty because the walkways and planters weren't clogged up with a bunch of the strollers!

Perhaps I should clarify....

I got really spoiled for a few years when I would go like October, early December, and February.

If the line for any ride was more than a half hour, I would just skip it. So, when I go on a day where there is an hour wait, I'm very much all uppty like "60 mins for Space Mountain??? Nah uh... I wouldn't wait half that long!"

When I go to Disneyland, if I do less than 25-30 attractions per day, I feel like I didn't do ANYTHING! Last time I went was February, and in 16 hours my 21 y/o daughter and I did... if I recall from memory.. something like 38 attractions in a day. That is sort of my "yeah, Disneyland should be like this all the time" case.

So, when I say Mon and Tue will be horrid because the SoCal's can get in, I'm comparing it to a VERY non-crowded base.

Edit: Looks like I was off a tad. Only 36. Here is the trip report:

In short, I got spoiled back a few years ago when the off season still existed.

No matter how "crowded" the park is, just follow the basic rules I laid out on page one, and you will be okay. Arrive pre-open and be near the front for rope drop. Ride the key attractions early (long wait later, but short ride time (coasters, Indy, Splash)) and stock up on FastPasses. Afternoon when the park is crowded is the time for the high capacity, long ride times, the shows, and the lesser attractions.

Well, you're freaking me out too! LOL! We are going to DL for our first time in June. I expect large crowds just becuase it is summer. We are going to be there the end of June 27-29th. How do you find the SoCal blackout dates, or whatever they are called? What should I expect for average ride times? This thread has been helpful to me. Sound like getting up early morning is the way to go.

I wouldn't worry about the grad nights. And this year, I wouldn't worry too much about anything before June 15th either, honestly. My family's last 4 trips were in October 2011 (weekend), December 2011 (Christmas break), this May 17-21 (Fri, Sat, Sun), and just this past Memorial Day weekend.

Predictably Christmas break was by far the most crowded (it always is), but surprisingly May 17-21 were much busier than Memorial Day weekend. Both had plenty of grad night attendees and any difference in the experience due to their presence was negligible. I expected major Memorial Day crowds like usual but this year it was actually pretty tame. More people than going during off-season, obviously, but nothing like what I've run into in the past during major holidays. Personally I think a lot of folks are holding out for all the new stuff opening in DCA on June 15th.

You can find blackout dates via the "View Blackout Calendar" links here under each pass type:

http://disneyland.disney.go.com/passes/

My family has the Premium pass and we saw plenty of other passholders there over Memorial Day, however, so I don't know if even the blackout dates make much of a difference since a lot of Premium passholders will still use those days.

For ride times, my personal experience is that it depends on the type of ride. Thrill rides like Space Mountain tend to be less crowded early in the morning, but late at night after WOC and F! start, the kiddie rides can be done with very minimal waits even on busy days. My personal threshold for patience is about 45 minutes, if the wait is longer than that then I just come back later in the day ... unless it's one that my kids REALLY want to go on, in which case I'll suck it up and wait up to 90 minutes max. Yep, I'm a sucker like that :)

I say don't worry about the dates and just go. You can't plan every variable, and in most cases the schedule is part that's the least flexible, so pick a good date for the trip and don't stress if you miss a ride or two :)

I've been to the park on holidays and the park is fine, if you follow the number one rule of ropedrop, ropedrop, ropedrop! :thumbsup2

This weekend is just a bonus trip for my daughters and I. We have our big summer vacation in August. We are not going to worry if the lines are long. We are there to visit with my sister and soak in the atmosphere. The weather looks lovely!
