Better Subs Than Subway?

In our area, Marianna's subs cannot be beat by anyone. I know they are not available in anyone else's area though.

If I can't have Marianna, I prefer to make my own. I can make a sub that will blow Subway out of the water any day of the week. Of course, it probably does really depend on what type of sub you eat. I pretty much stick to Italian and while it's not cheaper (though I don't think it's more either), I pick up all the deli meats and rolls and just assemble at home. We always have the lettuce, onion, pickles, pepper rings (which I don't eat), oil, Italian dressing, mayo, etc.. at home, so it's basically the meat and rolls (you can buy whatever kind of roll you want).

EDIT: If you ever try making them at home, remember, the key is getting the meats sliced very thin and doing layers.

Man! We always get the Club and a footlong here is $6.50.
Subway is our favorite, but we do like Quiznos!!

My two favorites besides Subway are Jersey Mike's and Penn Station. Niether of them are cheap but you get good quality food for what you are paying.

I'll have to agree with the ones who have said Jimmy John's!

Also, I'm not sure if they have locations outside Wisconsin, but I really like Cousins Subs.

I have to agree with Jimmy John's (went there all the time in college :rotfl:). Potbelly's is pretty good too. :thumbsup2

I am not a fan of Subway either. They have limited their menu so much over the last few years that it is not even worth it IMO. I would rather spend the extra dollar at Quiznos as I can get a sandwhich that tastes better. My favorite sandwhich shop isn't in Michigan, but Ca. It's Togo's. If you ever get out west you ahve to try them. Their prices are good and their sandwhiches much better.

Quizno's are more expensive - and I don't particularly care for them.. So - for us it's Subway - nothing else locally that I know of..

Back when I lived in my own home - up until the late 80's - a family friend had a sub shop that even the chain shops couldn't compete with.. His subs (as well as a wide variety of other items he made himself) were out of this world and very, very reasonably priced!! You always had to call your orders in ahead of time or the line would be out the door.. I don't think there was a business; police dept.; city hall employee; mailman; or anyone else that didn't get their lunch at his place every single day.. Unfortunately he died in his mid-50's - quite unexpectedly of a heart attack - and his "secret" recipes died with him.. His wife tried to keep the place running for a few more years, but the food was never the same, business dropped off, and she ended up selling the place.. Makes me hungry just remembering the "good old days".. Sigh....

Are there any taverns or such places near your home that might sell subs? Up to the lake there are two places that sell them and they're usually pretty good.. The General Store sells them too, but they're just "so-so".. Nothing to get excited about..

odd....it's still going on in Indianapolis.

Yep here too...:confused3 So far I haven't found any that I like better than Subway...we have no problems with the ones around here.

A couple of "Joints in my city have better-way better.

They make real French Bagettes -and the fried Shrimp, oyster or catfish Po-Boys are "to die for"

Check around with different Subways, ours still does the $5 footlongs.

We don't really have any specialty shops around here, we have Subway, Togo's & Quizno's. I don't like Quizno's at all. In the city I work in there's a little deli called Village Deli, they are good but a little overpriced so I'd rather go to Subway.

Gosh, 5 pages of chatter about sub sandwiches! Cool!! :goodvibes

OP here, we live about an hour north of Lansing so not close at all to the Detroit area. I do think there is a local Quiznos, and I've heard of Jimmy John's too so maybe that's another one I can find. We do have a Mancino's but I'm not crazy about their grinders (don't care for their bread or cheese being toasted inside). There are no small deli's around here, and the grocery store does make subs but they only put meat and cheese on them and they're pre-made and pre-packaged. Yuck.

I've made them at home, and enjoy doing that sometimes but can't get the much variety in the bread that way. The grocery store sells "sub buns" but they're just plain, nothing special or different.

Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions and comments! :)

Well, this thread has stirred up some major cravings in this pregnant woman. Tomorrow I'm going to be in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area, so I am definitely going to stop by a Jimmy John's! :woohoo:

We have the $5 footlongs too, but they have a very limited menu. None of the things my kids or I like is on the $5 menu.

Yes, the $5 footlong promotion has been gone for quite awhile now. :(

No Jersey Mike's or Firehouse or Publix here. :(

Maybe I'll have to google to see what's available around here. But I don't want to drive an hour to find a good, reasonably priced sub sandwich either. :)

We can still get $5.00 footlongs in Maryland. Sorry. :sad1:

Here too! I don't like subway though- 6 pieces of meat on a footlong sub is a joke! I go to a local hero place---costs more (like 9.00-11.00 for a hero) but its worth it. Nothing is as cheap as subway is but you get what you pay for!

LOVE Jimmy Johns! Their italian bread is so yummy!

Another place I really like around here is Paradise Cafe and then Beyond Bread.

Well out running errands before work and I ran by Subway....this thread was on my mind. We still have $5 subs in Oklahoma. Except I actually got a kids meal since I didnt' want a whole sub. Ham sandwich on wheat (1/4), baked chips, small coke (I actually wanted milk but they have 2% I like skim). Instead of a toy you get a reusable lunch bag (I admit I love reusable lunch gear). $4.00

Not bad, the lunch bags are from the wildlife fund/federation (?). Anyway donations made to them for every bag sold. I got the Black Rhino bag LOL

A mom at the next table told me if you bring the bag back, on your next kids meal they'll give you a cookie instead of another bag.
