We arrived in Orlando around 5:30. The weather looked fine, but by the time we arrived through the big purple Welcome sign for Walt Disney World, it was pouring rain and visability was poor. We followed signs for the Magic Kingdom, and at the gate Jason stuttered to the CM "We're checking into the Contem....Contemp...Contemp....Contemporary." The rest of us got quite a bit of laughter out of this. Everyone was pointing to the monorails zipping by, the kids were very excited. Next we had to go through the security gate for the Contemporary, and while Jason was trying to say our last name, Neth and I were stuttering "Ca....Ca...Cas...Caswell." The guard bid us a good stay, and we pulled up under the porte cochiere for the Contemporary. I then suggested that we simply park and walk in, would be much easier. So we parked nearby and grabbed excited children by the hand. The Contemporary Hotel is a very impressive sight, with the monorail line going in and out of the building.
Check in was painless, our CM was very friendly-she gave the kids some stickers and coloring books with crayons "from Mickey". We decided to stay here for four nights through Shades of Green, who had gotten great rates of $89 per night(regular rate for our room was around $200). I had requested a top floor, near the main tower. We were assigned second floor (out of three for the Garden Wing rooms) near the main tower. I was very happy with the location. Quick walk to the main tower, pool, marina, monorail, or the walkway to Magic Kingdom. What I had been dreading was the decor, but surprisingly I didn't mind it. Yes, it was very bright with wild patterns, but it seemed fun instead of gaudy. The elevator in the building talks to you in the voice of Minnie Mouse.
We parked and brought in our luggage, rested a bit. Then Jason decided he was hungry and didn't want to go into Orlando to eat, didn't want fast food. So I picked up the phone and made us a PS (priority seating) at the Kona Cafe in the Polynesian Resort. We quickly got ready, then headed to the main tower to catch the monorail over to the resort. The kids loved riding in the monorail.
Within a few minutes we were at the Polynesian, and at the Kona Cafe. We were a few minutes early, but they seated us right away. The hostess took us by the pastry counter so we got a good look at their signature desserts, as well as a statue of Stitch handmade by the staff chocolatier, out of chocolate. It stood at least eighteen inches tall. Very cute.
We were seated and began perusing the menu. Our server was terrific. She brought out Brenne's chocolate milk with an umbrella, just like daddy's mai tai. Jason had the roast chicken with mash potatos and steamed vegetables, which was excellent. Brenne had the Mickey pasta with top it yourself cheese. Neth and I both ordered off of the appetizeer menu. Neth had the crab cakes on banana bread gratin with baby field greens (our server complimented him on his taste.)
I had the seafood potstickers and fresh made tomato with basil soup. Both were to die for. The best tomato soup I have ever had. And the potstickers? I was tempted to order more. For dessert, Jason had another mai tai. The kids and I split the Kona Kiddie Kone. Our server rattled off the ingredients(superfast) in this, then told Neth she would only bring it once he could repeat them back. Ingredients: scoop of chocolate, scoop of vanilla, topped with chocolate syrup, mickey sprinkles, two butterfly cookies, chocolate mickey mouse, set into a waffle cone, glued to the plate with melted chocolate, surrounded by cotton candy. He said:blblblblblblblb vanilla, blbblbblbblblchocolate, blblblbbblbol surrounded by cotton candy. Very funny, she thought it was funny and brought it out with three spoons.
After we finished, she suggested we go out on the beach to watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks. This was the first I had really seen Jason excited since we arrived. He grabbed Brenne by the hand and ran past the pool (shaped like a volcano!) and out onto the beach. The fireworks are beautiful from here. They seem so much bigger than I remember them in the park. And the bursts are reflected over the water. The kids played in the sand, I took pictures, and everybody around us Oohed and Aahed. When they were done, people broke out in applause. We strolled back into the resort, stopping to watch people splashing in the pool, watch the torches, look at waterfalls and foliage. Inside, we went back upstairs and boarded the monorail back to the Contemporary.
Once back at our resort, we strolled out to the pool. It was still lively, around 10:30, and the kids wanted to play in the jumping fountains. I said to go ahead. They got soaked! The pool here is free form and only three to four feet deep. It has jumping fountains on two sides, a fountain in one section of the pool, a hot tub that sticks out into the middle of the pool that in turn has small fountains shooting out of it back into the main pool. Kind of hard to describe. It also has a great water slide. There is also a smaller, quiet pool that is round and sticks out over Bay Lake.
After playing for a while, we head back to our room. But not before taking pictures with the sculpture of mickey, which is lit up by neon tubes that change color.
Off to dreamland.......
