I think the title says it all. We've been back for months, and I just now got around to emptying my camera's memory card and pulling my thoughts together to start reviews and such! :rotfl:

I'll be adding pics as I get them sorted and uploaded. And I'll include a total $$ analysis of the DxDDP in the final post.

The basics:
11 nights, staying at the Wilderness Lodge and playing guinea pig for the new deluxe dining plan. 2 adults and 2 kids, all with reasonably adventurous appetites and very excited to try out the signature restaurants

Day 1:
The Plaza

This was the perfect choice for a first day lunch! I wanted something right in the middle of the action, because I knew the kids wouldn't want to hang at the hotel long enough to eat when there were rides to be found. We checked in about 5 minutes before our ADR and had a long enough wait for DH to have a cigarette at the nearby smoking area before we were seated.

I really liked the food here, but the service was just okay. I had chili, a reuben, and the brownie sundae with mint chip ice cream (YUM!). DH had a tossed salad, which DS promptly ate most of, a cheese steak sandwich, and a banana split. DS was feeling a little "ick" from the flight, and ate a lighter-than-usual meal for him, PB&J and grapes, but also snacked off the adult plates. DD was thrilled to see a chef's salad on the kids menu. Both kids passed on dessert to share ours. Everything was really good. The sandwiches were HUGE! If we'd been paying OOP, we could easily have ordered soup/salad apps and shared one reuben & fries between DH & I. The service was on the slow side, especially when it came to dessert and cashing out, and it wasn't because the restaurant was busy.

Overall, it was a good lunch and I'd gladly go back. We're looking forward to this one on our next trip as one of few sit-down meals on baby's first Disney trip.

Chef Mickey's

For the sake of fairness, I need to start this review with a disclaimer - I'm not a fan of buffets. I much prefer to be waited on, and find most buffets to be loud, chaotic, and generally not the relaxing experience I want when eating out. But since nothing screams "We're finally at Disney!" louder than dinner with the Mouse, I booked this for our first night anyway.

I'll start with the good - the food was good as far as buffets go. I really enjoyed the salmon, and the parmesan mashed potatoes are as good as all the reviews here promise. DH wasn't really impressed with anything here and thought the carved meats were just okay, but he didn't dislike the food either. It was just typical buffet food. The kids ate their weight in peel & eat shrimp and sampled some of the salads & sides before hitting the dessert bar for what has become a Disney tradition - a bowl of gummy bears. :rotfl:

The character interaction was very fun. DS was being a bit sulky and not wanting to have pictures taken with the characters (oh the joys of a tired 10yo!), and Donald and Pluto both teased him into smiling. DD was thrilled that Mickey & Minnie both came around twice, since we were there at the end of the night and the place was starting to empty out, and she was so happy to meet Mickey after missing him on our August trip because the line in Toontown was just too long.

The service here was flat-out bad. We had to track the waitress down to get the bill at the end of the meal, which is never fun when the kids are full and ready to get back to the room & unwind. She was slow on refills and hard to find all night, so much so that DH passed on having a second mixed drink because he didn't want it if it wasn't going to get to the table until dessert. And the atmosphere was really loud & chaotic. Lots of ill-mannered, under-supervised little ones, especially around the dessert buffet. I don't mind the expected noise and chaos of the napkin twirling and parade, but I don't like tripping over little ones when I'm trying to carry my plate and I *really* don't like seeing kids eating right off the buffet!

Would I go back? Well, I probably will brave it once more, when the baby is old enough to want to meet Mickey & Minnie. But then again, maybe not... We did have much better experiences with other character meals later in the week.

Day 2 -

Sunshine Seasons

This is one of few counter service places that really looked worth trying, so we picked up our Soarin' fastpasses and stopped in for lunch. The lines here are nuts! It wasn't especially crowded, but just the general disorganization for having different lines for different types of food was enough.

The food here was excellent for counter service and plentiful. DS had a kids' chicken leg meal with potatoes & applesauce. DD wasn't hungry, so she just picked off of DH's rotisserie chicken meal and carrot cake. I had a spicy sushi roll and key lime pie that DS helped me finish.

I don't know that I'd go back, though. Waiting in line at the rotisserie and again at the bakery counter and again to pay was a bit of a pain, even though the food was very good and the selection is great for a counter service. I think next time we'll try one of the many World Showcase CS options if we want something quick in Epcot, unless we just happen to be hungry while waiting for our Soarin' FP return.

DDP Cost - $33.78

Coral Reef

This was one of DS's many must-do meals. He loved the idea of the aquarium in the restaurant. We checked in early and were seated with just a short wait, maybe 5 minutes or so. We were seated about as far from the tank as we could be, on the top tier in a booth, but rather than being disappointed in the lack of a close-up the kids loved being able to watch the fish swim from one side to the other.

Coral Reef has one of the most impressive kids' menus we encountered on the trip, and DS especially took full advantage. Both kids had lobster soup, DS had mahi-mahi and DD had a chicken pizza. They both got sour apple slushies here, included with their meal, *and* pirate punch with the light up clips, which we paid for OOP. I had the shrimp cocktail and crab legs, and a virgin strawberry daquiri. DH had the surf & turf app and the crab legs, and ordered me a second strawberry drink for his dining plan drink since he was drinking mai tais. For dessert, both kids had the make-your-own sundae. I had the key lime tart, and DH had the Bailey & Jack Daniels mousse.

I enjoyed the shrimp, which was very fresh and served with a sauce that had the perfect kick to it. DH liked the surf & turf but thought it was a little on the small side. It ended up working out well, though, because both kids were happy to share their soup! The crab legs were a hit all around, and both kids snacked off our plate as well as eating from their own. DS's mahi-mahi was good, and he shared it with me since he ate about half my crab. LOL. Pizza at Disney leaves something to be desired, but DD seemed to like it okay (not well enough to order it again elsewhere, though). The make-your-own sundaes were a big hit all week, and I really liked the key lime tart. Good key lime pie is so hard to find around here that I'm easily pleased when I can get it! DH liked the mousse but found it too rich to finish, and I could taste the alcohol too much to enjoy it (though that is almost certainly pregnancy tastebuds talking - usually I love anything made with Baileys).

The service for this meal was excellent. The waitress was quick to point out that the frozen drinks were covered by the dining plan, and prompt with refills all evening. We will almost certainly go back at some point in the future, though not for a while because it was a long meal and not some place I'm interested in taking an infant!

DDP Cost - $126.62
OOP Cost - $66.00 (including 2 $8 mai tais and 2 $6 pirate punch)

Roaring Forks

We stopped at Roaring Forks for a late night snack while the kids swam. Two turkey & brie sandwiches, a bag of Cheetos, a cup of veggies with dip, two strawberry yogurts for 2 meal credits. There's not much to say about this - the sandwiches are good and the kids enjoyed the sides when they got out of the pool.

DDP Cost - $20.70

Snacks

Not many today, because we did a lot of eating. Either that or I lost some reciepts, which is entirely possible.

The Land Snack Cart -
Pretzel
Cheese Dip
Water
Slurpee

DDP Cost (estimated) - $9.50

Love your reviews. And wow. . . your kids really are adventurous eaters. What's your secret?

Great reviews so far! :goodvibes I can relate with the "better late than never..." part. I still have a dining review from January that I've been procrastinating on. Maybe you'll inspire me to get started on it! ;)

Great start! Glad to see a review of The Plaza, as we are eating there on our next trip.

Enjoyed reading your report ~ Thanx for sharing.

Mostly luck, I think. :rotfl:

They've both always been that way. We started them eating what we were eating when they were very small because I made most of their baby food. They do a lot of eating straight from my gardens, so getting them to eat their veggies has never been a problem. And I've never been one to serve much "kid food" because I don't care for it! But we've never made any real effort to push them to try new things because we've never had to. They're both easy-going kids who just seem like they were born willing to try out new foods and experiences. I just hope the new one is as cooperative!

DS is definitely the more adventurous of the two, and he's inherited my love of Asian food and sushi. Plus he loves good food of any sort, just like his mom! DD is a little more cautious - she'll try the adult food off our plates, but she likes to have a kids' meal back-up just in case.

Day 3 -

Roaring Forks

Just a quick breakfast before we headed out to Animal Kingdom for the day. There's not much to be said about this - the kids liked having the option of fruit in their cereal, and we liked the fact that 2 drinks come with breakfasts because it gave us some apple juice & water to pack away for later in the day. We're not big breakfast people, so DH & I had coffee/tea while the kids ate. Eating outside there is nice, but watch out for the ducks. They scared DD a little, since this was the first time we'd eaten outside and they were a bit on the overly friendly side. Not as bad as the ducks at the Beach Club, though! Those were downright agressive in trying to snatch our food on our last trip!

DDP cost - $15.69

Tusker House

We loved Tusker House as a counter service, so of course we had to try out the new table service incarnation. One thing that continually impresses me about Disney dining is that they can make even buffet style meals appealing, and this was one of the best we've had.

Our waiter was excellent, attentive but not overly so and very helpful. He recommended the curry chicken, which was a hit with all 4 of us though a little on the spicy side for DD, who had a few bites and then a whole glass of water. We also all liked the pork loin, and enjoyed trying it with the sauces. But what was really impressive here were the side dishes and vegetarian options. I didn't write down what the dish was called, but they serve a veggie dumpling that is a lot like the crab rangoons from a take-out Chinese place, and they were amazing! Crispy-fried but not greasy, with lots of veggies inside. The kids & I enjoyed the hummus more than DH did - he's used to the red pepper hummus I buy at home, and thought plain hummus was a little blah. He really enjoyed the apple & endive salad, which I didn't get around to trying. DD & I liked the spiced tofu, but DS & DH, not being tofu fans, didn't especially care for it. Actually, DS picked out the tofu, set it aside, and ate the veggies it was blended with, so I suppose he liked the seasoning even though he didn't like the tofu. :confused3

And for those of you with pickier kids, there are good options here too. DD had a couple of mini-corn dogs off the kids' buffet, and the waiter happily brought out ketchup at her request. Much to my surprise, she skipped the mac & cheese! DS got a slice of lunch meat and cheese to make a roll-up to dip in the mustardy sauce from the pork.

The dessert offerings didn't really impress my kids, so they stuck with fruit form the salad section of the buffet. DH & I, who aren't big dessert people to begin with, tried a few things but agreed that the desserts just weren't as good as the rest of the meal. There was a soft, gooey brownie that I'm sure would have been excellent if I liked chocolate more, but for me it was just choco-overload. We didn't mind the so-so dessert options, though, because we were well past stuffed from trying so many of the meats & sides!

DDP cost - $67.85
OOP cost - $20.86 (including one Safari Amber)

Yachtsman Steakhouse

This was going to be our kid-free, drink-around-the-World night, but when we found out I was pregnant we decided to change plans and bring the kids along for a nice steak dinner. I ended up being very glad we did, because once again we ended up canceling our coveted Le Cellier reservation later in the week - we're now 3 for 3 in getting the reservation and canceling it when plans change! But that's a story for later...

Yachtsman is a beautiful restaurant, very quiet and peaceful, and one of the more "adult" feeling signature restaurants we tried. I wouldn't hesitate to take my kids there again, but it definitely had a more grown-up vibe than the other Disney restaurants we'd been to at that point and it was one of the longer meals of the trip, about 2 hours from start to finish. The service was absolutely amazing, and we all very much enjoyed the meal.

Since we were at a steakhouse, I went for the classic - Caesar salad and filet mignon. Their Caesar dressing is nothing short of amazing, and the steak was perfectly done (I'm picky about my steaks - I can't stand bleeding meat, so it has to be perfectly medium-well without getting tough). DH had the lobster bisque and the T-bone, which was *massive*. The bisque must have been good, because he didn't offer to share, and he said his steak was perfectly cooked too. DS ordered a salad and steak while DD ordered chicken noodle soup and grilled chicken and they shared both meals between the two of them. They both agreed the soup was amazing. Salad with ranch is just salad with ranch, I suppose - they enjoyed it, but it wasn't anything out of the ordinary. They finished off the steak but only picked at the chicken, which did get eaten later back in the room. This was also the first place they did the "paint your own" puzzle dessert. What a brilliant idea that is! Dessert and entertainment all in one, and our server took their dessert order before ours so they were happily painting while we finished our meal and relaxed. DH & I split a creme brulee for dessert, which he really enjoyed but I was too stuffed to appreciate.

DDP Cost - $154.43
OOP cost - $49.25 (including two mixed drinks)

Snacks

Not many today again, because we had such good meals planned, but we had to hit the fruit stand outside the safari.

Harambe Fruit Market -
Green apple
Banana
Red Powerade
Blue Powerade

DDP Cost - $7.11

Hi Colleen, welcome back!
I am so glad that you went to Tusker House for lunch. We have ADR for lunch there too. Overall, how would you compare it with Boma. I have Boma ADR for dinner the night before Tusker House. Do you find them similar? If so, which one should I change?
