Best/Worst Car Rental Company?

With transportation options looking expensive, we may be better off renting a car while we're there. According to Orbitz.com there are many rental companies that I've never heard of. Any experience with Americar, EZ Rent, or Ace? At less than $100 for 7 nights, we're really considering it but I don't know anything about these companies. Any insight is appreciated. TIA!

The easiest, most time effective car rental agencies are those located at the airport. If you check the codes at mousesavers.com (ground transportation) you will probably find comparable rates. We have found great rates at Dollar and National using the codes I've found at this site.

I recommend bidding the amount you found at offsite places for an onsite place via Priceline. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! I have rented a car at MCO four times via Priceline. I've gotten Avis twice and Alamo twice.

I find my rental experiences with Hertz to be better than the onsite rental agencies. I can be driving out of the lot in less than 10 mins.

Personally, I would not go with any of the rental car agencies you mention. I know people have had good experiences, but I have read too many horror stories of bad cars and hard sell on insurance to deal with them. I perfer one of the majors, Hertz, Budget, National, Avis.

The advantage of a nationwide rental company is that you still have some leverage to resolve problems after you get home. (This does not mean you should ignore the problem until after you get home.)

I haven't used L&M but I would add them to the horror story list. Every now and then on The Dis boards, someone reports a case where they simply refused to honor your rservation.

The most common complaint I have heard (not yet experienced, fingers crossed) with Alamo is long waits at the counter.

I would highly recommend dollar. Try all the various codes on mousesavers and their rates are competitive. We have always had great service with them.

Personally, I would only recommend using Hertz and Avis unless price is *that* important to you ...

I actually did not follow my own advice this weekend while I was down there and I am regretting having rented with National instead.

Hertz is #1 for a reason. Never had a problem, cars are new , clean, low miles and ready to go. You get what you asked for , plenty of cars available. We rent over peak holidays, always have car, can't say the same for National.

Hertz can be few dollars more, but well worth the price.

I used Americar last fall because they had low rates. Shuttle from airport came within about 15 min(or less) from when I called them. No wait at check in(early afternoon Fri). No pressure for insurance.
The car was not so special. Ford escort or somthing. When we wanted to leave the check engine light was on. It had about 40K miles on it. They did not have anything else available, but said they would take care of us if we had a problem.
I took the chance and we did not have any problems. But things could have easily gone the other way and it could have broken down.
No problems with the return. Waited a bit for the return shuttle, but we got to the airport in plenty of time. No weird charges on my charge card.
Long story short: if you want to save the money, try it, but don't expect a fancy car or great service. If that is important to you, pay the extra and go with a name brand.

We've tried several offsite car rentals and have not had any problems with shuttle service, counter service, or vehicles EXCEPT with Payless. I would NOT go to them again. There have been other horror stories regarding them and the cheap price is not worth the hard sell tactics for insurance or upgrades of the counter staff, the rudeness, or inferior vehicles.

We rented from EZ Rent once and the experience was a good one. Remember, you get what you pay for. If cost is a high factor, then you could try some of the lower priced rental agencies but we always try to go with an established one. ie National, Hertz, Alamo, etc. We usually rent from National because we always find good rates with them and have never had a problem.

Like I said, the only one we would never go to again is Payless. The others we've tried have been ok with no major problems.

We've had good luck with Avis. Getting your vehicle is very quick if you join their preferred member club. Just bring a paper copy of your reservation with you. Both are good things to do no matter who you rent with.

I think renters under age 25 may do better shopping with some of the smaller companies otherwise don't bother. Once you take their shuttle you are at their mercy. There have been countless posts in the past about pressure for insurance, bad cars, cars that were smaller than promised, extra fees.

There are enough companies at the airport with discount codes and coupons. I'd stick with the major agencies.

My top five worst rental car experiences:

#1 America
#2 And no one
#3 else even
#4 comes
#5 close.

I see one poster had an adequate experience with Americar, and I never mean my single opinion to be almighty. But I'm the cheapest SOB that ever spent money in Orlando. I like to walk into PI and drop a couple hundred on food and drinks. For that reason, I skimp on hotel and rental car, which I consider utilitarian. But with Americar, I pushed the envelope past breaking point.

It's tough to encompass the experience in a short paragraph, I'll keep this as tight as possible. The line was long and angry even in late September, because almost everyone was going to their car, then coming back in to complain about its condition. I rent literally dozens of cars per year, so I'm used to the insurance pitch. But this was the worst I'd seen. They asked me what my deductible was ($500) then put a hold for that amount on my CC. Note that we went last September when Isidor was threatening the East Coast. I made it clear to the lady I wanted no part of their insurance, then went out the car.

By the time I got back, the lady had convinced DW that Isidor had taken a turn towards Central Florida and was destined to hit Orlando. Upon finding out we were staying at the Best Western Lake Buena Vista, the woman told DW the trees in DTD would make the car a sitting duck for flying branches and our insurance wouldn't cover it (several lies in one statement). And she told her that if something did happen, we'd be liable for repairs, plus list rental cost ($79 per day on a sub-compact) while it was waiting to be repaired, and it could take them up to a month just to get it in the garage. In short, she scared the crap out of my wife and I had to deal with the fallout for the next hour.

Also, and these are smaller points: We rent the cheapest piece of garbage possible because the only thing we want a car for is hotel to airport transportation and our yearly trip to Citywalk. They said when I rented it we'd get a Geo Metro or equivalent. This was fine for me. Give me something small and worthless so no one steals it on my watch. But what they gave me was a Suzuki Swift, which I've since heard referred to as an electric roller skate. Granted, my expectation should be low for a Geo Metro or equivalent, but this was a three-cylinder, which I didn't even know existed. And even though it was an economy car, according to our charts, it got about fifteen miles to the gallon and had a massive pull to the left (no doubt these two things were related).

Finally, when I refused to buy the tank of gas, they informed me the car they gave me was filled 2/3rds full, but I shouldn't worry because all I had to do was bring it back 2/3rds full. Again, small point. Filling it full instead of 2/3rds full probably cost me two or three bucks. But it's the principle: how the heck do you get a small car like that exactly 2/3rds full?

Anyway, maybe it's an isolated incident, but that's the worst rental car experience I've ever had and I feel the need to point the experience out to anyone who ask "what do you think of Americar?" A side note, I THINK Americar and Payless are basically the same company in Orlando. They share a building. The contract I signed was an Americar/Payless contract, and the keychain had Americar on one side, Payless on the other.

Good luck however you take it. But from one cheapskate, rental car is one place I'll not try to save bucks anymore. There are too many decent choices at the airport to take a chance on another experience like that.
