Hi,

I'm looking for a nutritious whole grain/wheat bread that also tastes good. I've heard that Ezekiel bread is the best from a health aspect, but does it also taste good? Any others that are tried and true? I also forgot that I'm trying to eat clean, so no HFCS or other additives.

I feed my kids the Hillbilly Wheat brand because it's a step in the right direction without it being kid yucky. KWIM?

I need something for me. Thank you!

I like Roman Meal multigrain always have since I was a kiddo. They did have high fructose corn syrup in it(no wonder) but I notice they have a new formula without it.

Otherwise I get Natures Own sometimes the 100% whole grain wheat or the honey wheat(pretty kid friendly my daughter eats it) which is high fructose corn syrup free. I use it very very lightly as I suspect dd and I may have some Gluten sensitivities.

My friend's sons who are over at my place a lot are mixed on it. One will eat the wheat the other will pick at it he is too used to white bread.

If you have a Trader Joe's near you they have a lot of really good whole grain and multi-grain bread.

Unfortunately, no Trader Joe's close enough. We do have a co-op and a better life health store. I hardly ever make it there, because it's on the other end of town. I was looking for a regular grocery store brand so I wouldn't have to make a special trip. I go to our local fresh market that sells fresher fruits and veggies, but they don't have breads different than the grocery stores.

I miss Trader's and wish we had one close.

Ezekiel bread is by far the best whole wheat IMHO. Not only is it whole wheat, but it's whole sprouted grain. You could darn near live on it. It's more dense than other breads and should be stored in the fridge.

On the other hand, we have a Toastmaster bread maker, which I HIGHLY recommend. It costs around $100 or less, I think. Not quite sure because it was given to us. It comes with lots of bread recipes, none of which take more than 5 minutes and have no more than about 6 ingredients (water, oil, salt, flour, yeast, & lemon juice). You simply dump the ingredients into the maker, turn it on, and voila--fresh, yummy bread in about 2 hours!

Either way, YUM!

I was going to suggest Trader Joe's too. I get my bread at Sprout's but I'm not sure if you have that store. Store brands are hard to find. many of the national brands are full of nasty things. I like Dr. Oz's concept of fewer ingredients. Anyway, I would try a grocery store with a bakery in it like a good Safeway store or a nice Target. They make their own in house breads and they taste good and are cheaper than a national whole grain brand.

Krogers and Whole Foods carry Ezekiel too. And often small health food stores will carry it or have great options.

Yep some Krogers do but some dont. I know ours are in form of Frys or Fry's Marketplace(has housewares, furniture more like a Walmart/Target just downsized a tad) they carry it while most of the regular ones do not. The Marketplaces have a health food section where the others don't always.

I love Ezekiel breads by Food for life. I get mine at Whole Foods and Giant. I buy a regular bread (a lot of the time I get the sesame bread), a cinnamon and raisin bread, tortillas, corn tortillas and they even have a pita bread.

I buy it frozen and keep it in the freezer and take what I need when I need it. I just use a knife to pull the slices apart and it works great. No waste!! I throw it in the microwave for a few seconds to thaw and then usually eat it toasted (except the tortillas).

Love Ezekiel bread.
Usually would get the grocery store variety of whole wheat. Funny story, my DS now 25 y/o moved into a duplex sharing with 3 other guys. He gets the guys all started on whole wheat. DS told me he can't eat white bread, and while they balked at wheat at first, it is working for all of them. The kids will get used to it.

I will go to Kroger's this weekend to look.

I have to agree with most of the national breads being full of crap and too many ingredients. Bread should be simple wholesome ingredients with fiber.

I'm going to check Kroger's this weekend. If they don't have it, I'll have to drive the extra miles to a smaller health store to find it.

So I'll most likely find it in the frozen section. Maybe that's why I've been missing it. I usually do toasted bread too even for a sandwich.

I'm so happy to hear so many good reviews on Ezekiel bread. I'm hoping my kids eventually start eating it instead of what they are eating now. I do want to make my own in our breadmaker, but wanted to buy some for convenience too.

Thanks!
