Best way to purchase an extended warranty?

Hello! I am in the market to purchase a 2012 toyota camry from a local dealer. The price he quoted he for the extended warranty is pretty high, and if I remember correctly, warranties are a huge profit maker for the dealerships.

So, where is the best place to buy a warranty? I have read online that i could try calling different dealers for better prices.

Does it have any of the manufacturer's warranty left? If so, I wouldn't spend money on a warranty. If there is some left, you should be able to make sure there are no issues while you are still covered. We had a Camry that we bought new years ago and didn't buy an extended warranty.
 
The car has 37000 so just out of the bumper to bumper, but still have some power train left. I am not even 100% sure I need the extended warrany
 
We went thru this when we bought or new truck

They will show you some brochurces with like 3 different levels of coverage. Lets say Bronze, Silver and Gold.

We kinda of liked the Silver "package" but felt like we'd only use about half the services, so we starting asking if we could take some of the items off, and the answer was YES, so we starting crossing items off and it really reduced the price.

The other hang up was that the dealership was sure to tell us that the service department only accepted certain "brands" of ext warranty programs.

That yes, there were other places we could buy an ext warranty, but that their service dept only accepted policies from company A, B & C. And that if we were really considering another policy to call the service center manage and check and see if it was one of the companies they even take.

Now, if that dosent matter to you, just know that you'll be having to seek out a shop that does take your policy and be aware that you may not like the place you're being told to go to

So all in all, we went with modified package thru the dealership
 

Why would you even consider buying an extended warranty for a Toyota? They have some of the most reliable cars. No need to buy any warranty.

Totally agree. If there is a recall on something major, they pay for it. Otherwise, no problems at all. I haven't gotten the extended warranty on any of my Toyotas and I've had five (two with 100K miles right now).

Consumer Reports advises not buying an extended warranty on anything. Most just make money for the seller, not the buyer.
 
Save the money you planned to spend on a warranty and use it for normal maintenance and repairs. You'll like come out ahead.

We had never purchased an extended warranty on our vehicles either - never needed them because the they were hondas, toyotas or subarus, and weren't chock full of electronics.

Cars are a different story now. We just purchased a 2014 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite, and it is full to the brim of technology. We ended up purchasing the Honda extended warranty because if one of our two LED screens go out, the cost of the policy is paid for. After having our home electronics go out on a regular basis, we thought the extended warranty was a good idea just for the technology in the van. The Honda dealer cut the price of the policy in half for an 8 years, 100,000 miles bumper to bumper coverage with no deductible.
 
I went on the internet. There are a number of car dealers that sell manufacturers warranties for less on the web, they are like giant clearing houses.

I agree, extended warranties, just like travel insurance, are almost always a waste of money, what you are buying is piece of mind. I bought extended warranties on both my kids used cars, both Fords, because they were going to be hundreds of miles from home at college. Turned out to be a waste of money because one just turned 100k without a single repair, and the other has 62k on it with no repair costs and the warranty has now expired.
 
The extended warranty paid for itself on my past three cars. One warranty included prepaid maintenance which made the prepayment cheaper then paying as we went.

I have a Toyota now and yes I did buy the extended warranty. I know many people are saying it is not worth it for a Toyota. But seriously I have never had a vehicle with so many little repairs needed. Like every trip to the dealer they have to fix something. My extended warranty is already starting to pay for itself.

I look at extended warranty's now like I do insurance. You may not need it, but when you do you will be very glad you have it.
 
Update: I called two Toyota dealers. One told me that based on the year and miles on the car I had to buy the warranty where I purchased the car. I then called the dealer (different location, same dealer) where I am purchasing the car and got a price of $500 less than the salesman told me.

So I called the salesman, told him I was no longer interested as I found he lied about the price of the warranty and I found the car cheaper elsewhere. Yup. I am sick of car shopping.

Soo he called me an hour later and asked what he could do to make me purchase the car. He did tell me the price was firm (and it really is a good price). So I requested the warranty for 1/2 of what he originally quoted me. Just waiting on the call back:lmao:
 
My husband priced the extended warranty when he bought a Dodge Intrepid years ago. Apparently, the warranties are a way the salespeople can make extra commission. He was given a price of 1200 at one place and half that at another. When the first salesman called him to try to make a sale, he told him he wouldn't buy from him because he lied.

Yup. Which is why if you shop on the internet you can find authorized new car dealers who will sell the exact same manufacturer warranty for a much lower price. They do it as a side line, hey you can make a lot of money selling hundreds of warranties.

I'd be curious what 1/2 is. Years ago I did purchase the 10 year 100K mile Toyota platinum warranty for a new Sienna, which of course we never did end up using. The dealer wanted $2,000 for the warranty which I purchased from another dealer for less then $500.

So you should have told the dealer you your price was $500 below the other dealer's price you would purchase from them and forget the warranty. The price is never firm by the way...

If you have not yet purchased, I would email every dealer withing your willing driving distance asking for an "Out the Door" price on the type of car your are looking for...
 
Here is what Consumer Reports says about car extended warranties:

"After dedicating an afternoon (or more) to test driving, negotiating, and completing a pile of paperwork for your shiny new car, the bubble-bursting finance manager gives a compelling pitch for an extended warranty. It is for your peace of mind, right? Well, not really.

The last-ditch effort to sell you a warranty, or various other unnecessary services, is the dealership's final assault on your checkbook before you tuck it securely away and drive off. Sure, the pitch is convincing: Should an expensive repair be necessary after the factory warranty ends, you'd be protected. No one wants a big, financial surprise, nor wishes to be stranded roadside. (Read: "Watch for these dealer sales pitches.")

But breathe deep and think this through. The sale of the warranty is a profit item, with the dealership serving as the middle man. The premise is that the customer will not need repairs in excess of the warranty cost, minus profit to the dealership and the warranty plan provider. Since extended service contract pricing is not regulated, dealers charge whatever the market will bear, and a 50-percent cut for sales commissions is not unusual. By contrast, our past research has shown that only 17 percent of your annual premium for auto insurance goes to commissions and other selling expenses. In other words, an extended warranty is usually not in the customer's interest.

If that isn't enough to dissuade you, hear me out. A few years ago, Consumer Reports proved the dubiousness of this pitch by surveying 8,000 owners of five- and six-year-old vehicles that had been covered by extended service plans. Sixty-five percent of those surveyed said they spent significantly more for the contract than they got back in repair-cost savings. Respondents said their extended warranty cost them $1,000 on average while providing an average benefit of $700. That means the average loss was $300. A big reason: 42 percent of extended warranties in our survey were never used, in most cases because the vehicle didn't need repairs or the standard manufacturer's warranty sufficed.

Another reason people were dissatisfied was because the repair was not covered. Clichés about reading the fine print are especially appropriate when talking about extended warranties. The brochure may present the service plan as "comprehensive," but the contract will likely have numerous limitations, such as requiring documented service at in-network shops and covering only certain parts, rather than whole systems.

Rather than invest in an extended warranty, we recommend buying the most reliable car that suits your needs, budget, and taste and taking good care of it. Sometimes, this can mean spending more upfront, but the reward is typically lower ownership costs and even better resale value. But, if you're heart is set on a model known to be unreliable, an extended warranty can provide some protection. Just approach with caution, negotiate the price, and be aware that if you roll the cost into your financing, you'll be paying interest on it for years to come.

The salesman told me the warranty would cost $2'800. I called one dealer who told me they couldnt sell me the warranty, it needed to come directly from where I purchased the car. I then called the dealer where i am purchasing the car and they told be it was $2400.

I got the warranty, 5 yrs,/100k for $1,400 with a zero deductible and it is bumper to bumber.

I know warrantiesa re huge money markers for dealers but my last car the warranty paid for itself in the first 4 months
