Hi everyone. We head out to Florida for a ten day visit starting Sept 4th. Very soon!!! . We are starting at Universal for 3 nights then coming out to a BWV 1BR for a week.

We want to get groceries for the week. I've used Garden Grocer once before for a stay at AS Music family suites. It was convenient but a bit spendy.
We are not renting a car and figure on taking a taxi or Mears to get from US to BWV. ( I admit to being a bit undecided as to how we are getting to the BWV's but as we are just 2 adults we can wing it a bit)

Our choices for groceries seem to be either using GG which ultimately would be fine. Or maybe renting a car for the day and do some other running around or Getting a taxi or limo service and have them stop at a Walmart or something on the way from US to Disney. My biggest worry about that is leaving our stuff in the taxi while running to grab a few things. I think I remember reading that you can get a town car and have a grocery stop included in the service. I think I'd feel better about a grocery stop with a town car service.(Oddly going into a store to pick out our own things rather than online is preferable. Going into grocery stores and perusing the items and prices is quite fun. Just checking out what is different from home and what is the same is interesting. Obviously I am easily amused!)

Anyone have any ideas as to which of my options would be the most practical? Or does anyone have any different ideas?
Also what would be a good store to stop at on the way from US. I just figured a good old Walmart would work and they seem to be everywhere. Or a super Target.

I hope this post makes some sense. It's very early in the am and I'm not thinking as clearly as I should be.:rolleyes1
I am however very excited for my first stay at a DVC property. I'm thinking I might just be spoiled for life after this visit!
Also I find the planning to be so satisfying and fun that I tend to over think things like this. Ah well, less than 2 weeks to go!!
Thanks everyone!

We used We Go Shop when we went awhile back and that worked great for us. She even delivered after 8pm when we got to our room so we didn't have to deal with it the next day which was really nice.

* You could stop at the Walmart Supercenter on Rt. 535 (Lake Buena Vista exit off of I-4). It is south of Vineland approximately 4 miles.

* If you're up for a walk, you could take the Disney bus to Downtown Disney and walk down Hotel Plaza Boulevard. There is a Goodings grocery store in the shopping plaza (Crossroads I think) but it is an expensive one. There is also another grocery store behind the Orlando Premium Outlets.

* You could look into the Lynx Orlando Bus system since they do pick up on Disney property.

* Best option may be to rent a car (compact one) at the Alamo Rental Car facility on property near the AAA Car Care Center. I believe if you make a reservation and ask for pick-up from your Disney resort, they will send the Alamo van to pick you up. When you drop off the car, they shuttle you back.
You could use the car to visit the Orlando Premium Outlet center on Vineland near Downtown Disney and visit the Disney Character Warehouse to get a huge discount on Disney souvenirs.

Have a wonderful trip!

I always have a car.

If you want to do anything else off property, I would rent a car for a day and do it all. I use the alamo/national at the car care center (check mousesavers for a discount code)

Not to deflect your question, but I also always get the unofficial guide (its like 12$ on amazon) to have with me. They cover groceries and everything in it. I have been to the world 15-20 times and still find that a good purchase. I actually ordered mine this week for my December trip.

I do not do groceries, but they have a section on options and price comparisons.

If it is only groceries, the taxis are reasonable and readily available.

We used a town car last time we went. It picked us up at the airport and we stopped at a Publix (I believe) on the way to WDW. I went in and did the grocery shopping while my sister stayed with the car. Very easy and we got what we needed for our week stay.

You didn't mention what type of groceries you were looking to get. If it's just milk, bread, soda, beer, snacks, butter, cereal, etc. you can take a short walk from BWV over to the Hess station. It's about a 10 minute walk. Prices are not bad and it is convenient.

It's usually just DH and myself staying at BWV or BCV. I pack a box of Cheerios for him, coffee, tea bags, sugar, some snacks and maybe English muffins. We make the trek over to Hess and pick up anything else we might need.

I think it depends on what/how much you need. You could use one of the deliver services like you did before. You could use an online service and have them delivered to DVC or you could ship your own for non perishables. BWV may be one that charges for receipt of packages though. You could use a car service with a grocery stop or you could get a taxi to a store then get another taxi if you'll be a while. I think the albertson's will do a fax order for a small fee so you'd just have to run in and pick up.

IF we are traveling without a car or to another country, we try to take as much with us as possible. That way we don't spend time or have aggravations such as this. Then if we only need perishables and have to get them at a small shop, it's not as big of a deal. Personally I'd likely rent a car for the 3 days and drop off at WDW. That way you avoid the 3 issues of travel to your first destination, the grocery stop and the travel to DVC. You could also easily pick up a few things for light meals and snacks for your Universal component.

Our largest 'grocery' expense is beer. A 6/7N requires a 24/32 in room supply. To buy this quantity 'on property' can be a feat of strength without a car.

SSR/OKW is the most convenient to the Hess station, cheapest place to buy beer in quantity on-site, as the buses are also right there to help transport his supply back to the room. BWV are close to the Hess station but you're on your own for transportation back to the room, plus there's a large rode-way to cross w/ no convenient crosswalk.

If we're arriving on the weekend, we can have our FL-based DD deliver when she comes to spend the weekend but mid-week with us at BLT or BCV then we use WeGoShop. They'll look for deals, give the receipt for you to look over when dropping off and help BS store supplies in refrigeration if the room is not ready.

Other than beer, I wouldn't bother with buying food off-site. The DVC discount at the resort stores drops food items to within reason. The few times we've bought food we've tossed 40% away. When you factor the waste the on-site food is more reasonable. :laundy:

Not if you put the beer in a rolling bag, LOL.

The BWV is just across the road from a HESS station - less walking than the trek to EPCOT or DHS, IMO. The OP wouldn't be the only one ever to use a rolling bag to transport a few things to the BWV from the HESS station. :teeth: This option would depend more on how picky they are wrt beer brand and if HESS carries what they want.

I agree. We sometimes rent a car for a day or two depending on our plans. If we're staying at BWV, we arrange to pick up the rental car at MCO and drop it off at the Dolphin. The Alamo desk at the Dolphin closes early but you can just drop the car off with the valet there even after hours. The valet will give you a receipt. It will cost you a tip but it's very easy and convenient.

Huh - totally didn't thinking of using one of the carry-ons - thanks :thumbsup2

WeGoShop several times and had great experiences with them. They shop where you want them to, buy the brands you want, shop specials and will use coupons if you mail them to them and will make additional stops for a minimal charge. We pack a few dry items in our bags but for milk, eggs, bacon, sausage, butter etc. we use them. They also buy our soda and go to the second stop to buy our booze. They do not make up the individual items and charge a delivery fee that is less than a taxi ride.

If you decide to rent a car, you can walk from BWV to the Dolphin. They have a National on the premises. Easy breezy!

I was looking into using WEGOSHOP and was told they can only bring the groceries to the front of the resort. They can not bring them up to the room. We would have to get help from bell services. Well, what if the room isn't ready? I would have to get bell services to hold the food and the have them bring the up to the room later. That mean two more rounds of tips.

Has anyone else been able to have groceries brought right to the room from other shopping services.?

By the way, my DD has decided to drive, so she will be picking up the groceries.

DH and I have used the same town car service with a grocery stop at least 10 times. We love the individual service, picked up at baggage claim. The driver stops at a Publix and we have 30 minutes to get what we need, and then are off to the resort! We have always just kept out bags and belongings in the car with the driver without any worries. Plus, the round trip town car service makes returning to the airport a breeze.

In addition to purchasing the groceries, another reason I really like the town car service, is that once we land, get our bags, stop at the grocery store, and arrive at our resort, no more than 75-90 minutes have passed since landing. Our flight typically lands at 9:30am and we arrive at the resort by 11am. More time to enjoy WDW! If our room is not ready, bell services holds the groceries with our luggage and even keeps cold items refrigerated.

Is there still a Hess near Downtown Disney that stocks a few groceries?

That Hess is still there. You can get off at the Pleasure Island stop, cut through parking lot & it's across the road.

We used Garden Grocer in February and they were great, delivered everything to bell services and bell services delivered it all to our room, fantastic service
