Hi

What is the best and cheapest way to go from the Disney resort to the Universal Studios theme park? Are there any public transportation services. I understnd that a local company Mears? provides some srvices between the parks. How have people found that?

If you rented a car it could be pretty expensive car rental for a day around there can get expensive, though it is pretty cheap near the airport.

If you were going to rent a car for just the one day, that would be a hassle. As far as public transportation goes, I would think there would be a bus to down town Disney area but but not sure if it would take you to the Universal parks themselves. If you are going to stay onsite, you can arrange for a seat on the Mears bus. Have you gone onto the transportation board of this site? They may have more answers for you there. I am sorry I really couldn't give you a positive answer other than try the transportation board.

The cheapest way I can think of is to get the Disney bus to Downtown Disney, then get a Taxi to the bottom end of I drive, then jump on the
I-trolley which I believe makes a stop at Universal studios, but seems like a lot of hassle, A taxi I think would cost approx $30 - $40, but you could ask if they would do a fixed rate.

The Car rental would cost about $35 for a Neon for the day, but that’s a pick up at the airport. I’m not sure what public transport goes from Disney to Universal, sorry.

Good luck.

Welcome aboard. This question comes up a lot.

The #50 Lynx bus can get you from the TTC to SWF, but from there you need to catch 2 more busses if you want to get to Universal. The entire trip will take you about 2 hours and no one has done it. A few people have done the #50 from the TTC to SWF and that works fine.

Renting the car costs more money (rental fee, gas, parking fees), but the convience factor makes up for it. You can go anywhere you want, when you want. You can drive along I-drive and explore. Visit a grocery store and stock a cooler.

Otherwise, you hire a limo service. There are many mentioned on this board. Keep reading and people will post a few they like.

I tell everyone to rent the car.

It's really not. I've done it a bunch of times. There are numerous places on Disney property where you can pick up and drop off a rental car. The easiest is the Car Care Center, which is operated by National and Alamo. Reserve your rental car for pick-up and drop-off there. About 30-40 minutes before your pickup time, go to the front desk of your Disney resort and ask them to call the Car Care Center shuttle, which will pick you up at the resort and take you to the CCC.

Really, it's not that hard and you can often get a one-day rental for as little as $20 plus tax, which is much cheaper than the other options and gives you tons more flexibility.

I just did a test reservation at Alamo.com and got an economy car, picking up/dropping off at CCC, for January 24 for $19.99 plus tax ($26.02 with tax). It would have been only $1 more for a compact car, $5 more for a midsize.

Thanks! I was just about to ask the same question about a one day visit to Universal from a WDW Resort. :)

Is there still a Alamo/National Desk at the WDW Dolphin?

We are planning on doing a taxi from our Disney resort directly to our Universal resort, then again from our HRH to MCO. Most have told me to expect around $40 one way.

We are just back from an 11 day Disney vacation with 2 days spent at US/IOA...we flew and did not rent a car so ended up scheduling Mears transportation for both days to US/IOA. You call 24 hours in advance and schedule a pick up time from your hotel and either at that time you can schedule your return time or you must call at least 2 hours prior to wanting to be picked up. The cost is $15 per person round trip...so for the 4 of us 2 days it was $120. Both return trips we had problems...scheduled for pick up at 6:15 pm and the van was late then we waited about 30 minutes for another passenger who didn't show up at all. The next night we also did a 6:15 pm return and walked up just as they were putting another group in our van (thinking they were us - didn't ask I'm sure) so Mears had to pay for a cab to get us back to All Star Movies - fyi. cost on that was $40 1 way so I'm not sure on the cost effectiveness of a cab.

Long story short...too late....depending on your situation and # of people in party a car rental may be the best way to go.

It's a shame that Universal hasn't picked up on this and could offer some sort of service. I'm sure Disney wouldn't let a Universal bus on Disney property. I guess they need to make it as difficult as possible to discourage you from going somewhere else.
