I would like to buy points for a cruise we want to take. I need about **. Any suggestions? We haven't been DVC members very long

**I edited the original post to remove the specific info about the number of points needed.

You may use our DVC Rent/Trade board, by replying into an existing Points for Rent/Transfer thread, if you wish to rent point for a cruise. Be sure to state you want the points for a cruise, as people who have purchased resale may not be able to use their points for a cruise.

However, I should say that the "per point" value of using points for a cruise isn't the best. If you have points that have to be used, or have a lot of points, then that is one thing....but having to have points transferred for a cruise, you'd likely be better off renting out your own points and using the cash to offset the cost of the cruise.

You should also realize that you can use points for some passengers and pay cash for the others so you do not need the full compliment of points for your entire reservation.

MS can provide exact details about the points/cash needed for the cruise you want to take.

Good luck! :)

Did you purchase your DVC points from Disney direct, or via resale? That makes a difference, too.

I thought I could have someone transfer points over to our account to use for the cruise. It is a better price to purchase points than to use cash to purchase for the cruise. I need to find someone who bought points from disney direct right?

Yes, as long as your contract was also purchased direct or prior to the date that restrictions were placed on resale contracts.

You should definitely check the cost of reserving some cruise guests using points and then paying cash for the other guests. Renting points from another member is not usually cost effective to make a cruise reservation.

I'd be sure to do the math before trying to find a transfer to use points for a cruise. Don't forget about the $95 fee just to make the reservation.

Good luck! :)

I am confused on why you would do this. We choose to use points ourselves on cruises but when we don't have enough, we pay the difference in cash.

Renting the points seems like a unnecessary step.

I don't think I've seen a cruise that was cheaper points than cash at current rental rates. I'm sure you know the listings on the charts are per person. Also, there is far more risk using points and any cash portion is due in full up front if applicable. IMO, esp since you'd be renting points (paying for a transfer), it's not usually a good choice. Just make sure you consider what you're getting and not and what happens if you have to cancel.

Echoing previous posters, and having taken 7 cruises with points. I am finding it hard to see a situation where this would make sense.

Based on the going rate to rent or transfer points of $10 per point or more. You are only going to get around $7.00 or less in value for those points, by using them on the cruise.

We have never realized better than $7.50 in value per point on cruises, and we usually search for the very best value we can find. Usually values run in the $6.50 per point range. And I usually do not factor in the $95 fee, which would lower the value even more.

Although it would certainly be possible to do this by renting or transferring points, it just does not make much financial sense to me to pay $10 or more for something that will only bring me a value of $7 or less.

Without knowing how many points are needed (not needed, though, and know it's a DIS rule) I can't say whether this is financially feasible or not.

Very informative advice, once again, though. I hadn't even THOUGHT of this option for us. We pay cash now (for DCL), but if a year comes that we can't get to Disney on land, and banking would just give us a uselessly high amount of points for the next year, we could do this option! Thanks for the post OP and answers others! popcorn::
