We'd like to stay at one of the universal resorts to get the front if the line pass. However, for medical reasons we need to be able to cancel things with as little penalty as possible. What's the best way to book? Through universal or the hotel website?

For example at Disney I always book a room only, which lets me cancel with no penalty up until the week of the trip.

Book through the hotel, room only. You can cancel for no charge until 5 days before the start of your stay. I only book room only, as cheaper to cancel or change a room only reservation, and most of the time, it is cheaper to buy your tickets from an authorized reseller or online. And for me, I have an AP, so I always book room only. It's the room key, not the ticket, that gets me the free express pass. I stay at whatever of the 3 is the cheapest, most of the time. If money is not as much an issue, we really like the Portofino the best.

You could also book through a reseller like Orbitz and probably get the same 5 day cancellation policy. I checked Orbitz and I was it was that way. The one way you probably don't want to book is a package.

With a discount code at Orbitz, Cheaptickets, etc you can get the same cancellation policy. You can verify the cancellation policy that applies to your rate prior to booking.
