Best way thru D.C. coming from NY

Thanks everyone for your advice. We made it around DC yesterday via the Wilson Bridge. We did hit the traffic afterwards, about 20 minutes not that big a deal. That was pretty much the only traffic we hit. We are at the Hampton Inn in Walterboro right now. It's pretty nice-very comfy beds, clean. Our 2 year old did not want to sleep in the pack and play so the double bed's size was not cutting it! Just an FYI, we pulled into Florence exit 160A for gas and we were able to access the Red Roof Inn's Wifi from in front of the store at the Exxon and check out hotels for Walterboro.

Has there been a time in recorded history when there WASN'T construction on 495/95 in and around DC? Seems like entire families of construction workers have been thus employed over the years---generations of grandfathers, fathers, sons, etc.

mamapajama: Don't fret too much about directions once you hit the DC Beltway at 95--it's pretty well marked.

What was the Truman administration Alex?

I've lived in the area for almost 15 years now and I must say, this is the worst construction I've ever seen down here. The entire beltway is torn apart because of two major projects occurring simultaneously. First you have the addition of "hot lanes" on the beltway, which run through Tyson's Corner. Then, you have the expansion of the DC Metro to Tyson's Corner, and eventually Dulles airport.
