Best way from Anaheim to Santa Monica

We're looking at going to the Santa Monica pier/beach for a day on our vacation this August, and I'm trying to figure out what the best route to/from would be.

The possibilities I have are:
- I5 North to I10 West: this is the way Mapquest wants to take me, but it goes through downtown LA so I can't believe this is the best route
- I5 North to I105 West to I405 North to I10 West
- I5 North to 91 West to I405 North to I10 West
- I5 South to 22 West to I405 North to I10West

We'll probably be going on a Wednesday. We won't leave until after the morning rush, but depending on how much fun we are having we may end up smack dab in the middle of the afternoon rush coming back. We'll have 2 in the car so I think we'll qualify for most carpool lanes in the area (or do they require 3?). Does anyone have any feedback for me on which of the above routes might be the best general approach? I'll listen to the traffic reports and try to adjust as needed, but I probably won't have access to sigalerts or anything. And I've found by the time a backup usually makes it onto the traffic reports, I'm already stuck in the middle of it!

Trying to predict traffic in LA is impossible. The mapquest suggestion is probably the easiest drive, and the 10 is actually south of downtown, so you won't really have to drive through it. Any of the choices you gave will get you there. There will be much more traffic on the 10 than on either the 91 or the 105, so it may be better to take one of those. BTW, carpool lanes require 2 or more.

Just out of curiosity, why not go to Huntington Beach, Seal Beach or Laguna Beach? All are much closer. Trying to drive south on the 405 in afternoon rush is crazy.

Hope this helps!

Thanks - it helps a lot!

As far as why Santa Monica, my daughter really wants to go there - it's a Disney Channel thing. They filmed a lot of their commercials for this summer there, and so now she really wants to go there in person to see "THAT place". She's a good kid and generally goes along with what I make her do without too much fuss, so I'll let her make the call on this one. My evil Mom plan though is to give her a choice that morning of Huntington vs. Santa Monica with lots of discussion on just how long we will probably be stuck in traffic if she picks Santa Monica. I don't think it will make any difference to her though - she's a Bay Area baby, and used to sitting in traffic unfortunately!

Hope it's OK to do a follow up question here. We're trying to decide which day would be a good day to go to Santa Monica - Thu, Fri or Sat. Which day would be best? Like the OP, we won't go until probably 10 to avoid the am rush, but may end up returning in the afternoon rush (that's why we are considering going on Sat instead). Thanks!

OP, thanks for the routes!
