My wife is a long time vegetarian, but a few months ago switched to a vegan diet. I consider this a strong sign of mental illness, but that's beside the point...

We're looking for some recommendations of the best vegan friendly meals at the World. I think I've seen that some restaurants have off menu vegan choices?

LOL. How can people live without cheese?!?! I could live without meat...but not cheese.

Tangierene Cafe in Morocco has a falafel plate with hummus and tabouleh which is amazing. I've heard good things about Sanaa and Boma as a buffet has a TON of fresh salads, soups, etc. You might have luck there.

I love the vegetarian platter at Tangerine café, Sunshine seasons at the land, the Lighthouse sandwich at CHH, they usually have a good vegetable stir fry at 9 Dragons
I would check out the menus ahead of time.

I have a friend and her husband (both vegan plus allergies) who recently went to WDW - they raved about Hollywood Brown Derby and Trail's End (I think the chef at TE is well known for catering to allergies/special diets, but I can't remember their name off the top of my head).

My wife really enjoyed the vegan meal she had at 'Ohana and Boma, with Boma being her favorite.

Chef TJ - just make sure it isn't one of his days off as the other chef (at least the one I had the time we went and Chef TJ was on vacation) is terrible! I forget his days off but you can search on his name to find more. Also, you need to time dinner so it doesn't conflict with Hoop Dee Doo.

Jiko has incredible vegan offerings and I was quite happy with both lunch and dinner at the Wave. Yak and Yeti is good at AK. Also, I had a great vegan lunch at Rose and Crown in Epcot. Avoid Kona at the Poly - it used to be good but not anymore. Also, Sci-Fi used to have a great tofu dish but alas it is gone too only to be replaced by a veggie burger, which I believe is vegan. our last visit was April 2015 so reasonably current. (At Rose and Crown, you need to speak to the chef; at the Wave, the tofu wrap is really good - just ask for it without the cheese)

Coral Reef has Gardein Chick'n Breast and they also serve bread with earth balance butter. Sanaa has it's own vegan menu! I agree with a previous poster about Boma and 'Ohana. Tusker House is great as well.

We're staying at AKL Kidani, so I'm sure we'll end up at Sanaa a couple times.

Excellent suggestions, thank you all!

I'm tempted to just push her into Living with the Land at meal times and let her forage around, but the fish farming might be too off-putting.

I'm not vegan, I have nothing to add to this thread, but this comment is hilarious!!! :lmao:Good luck to you guys!!

I can't offer any meal suggestions, but make sure the chefs and managers you speak to (especially at counter service locations) understand the difference between vegetarianism and veganism -- some of the soups may have a chicken broth base for example, and some desserts may have gelatin in them which is obviously not vegan.

I think your wife is awesome for going vegan! :thumbsup2 I would really like to soon. We eat a lot of vegan and vegetarian meals at home (my husband is slowly coming around to vegetarianism at least) but I "slip up" when I'm out of the house or don't have a lot of time to prep interesting meals. Some of my favorite vegan recipes are from Oh She Glows (I have her cookbook which says a lot! She also posts a lot of stuff on her blog). I try to stay mostly soy free as well.

Hoop de Doo does a fantastic grilled portabello mushroom and veggies dinner. Then of course Boma is also very nice if you dont want to do a show.

There's an excellent Vegan Disney World blog you should have your wife check out. I'm not sure if it would violate any rules to post it, but she can find it easily by googling. Other than that, my experience with Disney has always been that if I let them know about my dietary restrictions (I'm vegetarian), they can generally accommodate by leaving things off, suggesting alternatives, etc.

I'm with ya on the potential staleness of the wife and must admit I do not know where the line between vegan and vegetarian is, but a few non meat items I've found to be good

Sanaa - bread service and chick pea entree
Sunshine seasons - squash soup and beet salad
Columbia harbor house - lighthouse sandwich
Tusker house - lots of options on their lunch buffet like lentils and a tofu curry dish

Chicken broth and gelatin are not vegetarian either. If a chef or manager has an issue, it is easy to just say no dairy, no eggs, no honey - these three items are the major difference between vegetarian and vegan. Of note too, not all cheese is vegetarian - if they use animal rennet it is not vegetarian. I'm not sure if all chefs realize that.

To the OP, your wife will be fine and you don't need to push her off the boat!

At Sci-Fi there is a vegetarian shepherd's pie as well as the veggie burger, but it has cheese on top which you could probably ask to leave off. It was delicious! My DD12 and I thought it was one of the tastiest meals of the trip.

Yes, you are right...What I meant to say was that some staff members may think a soup is vegetarian or vegan so long as it doesn't have meat, not thinking about more obscure things like broth, gelatin, etc.

I love the vegan menu at Sanaa, it s all flavourful and there is no deciphering the ingredient of every menu item. Gasparella Grill at the GF has make your own pasta or salad and the have Gardein chick'n chunks, so I am definitely trying this out next trip. I also plan on hitting Beaches and Cream for the falafal and a vegan No Way Jose. Good luck to your wife and enjoy your trip.

Yes, you are right. I remember calling a restaurant near us to see if they had a vegetarian option. They replied yes, so I made a dinner reservation. When we got there, our waiter asked "How vegetarian are you?" When I asked what she meant, she said that their vegetarian option is made with chicken stock. I told her that it then wasn't a vegetarian option and we walked out.

The Shepard's Pie is not vegan and can't be made vegan. The veggie burger may or may not be vegan but I think I remember that they did at least offer a vegan burger if you asked for it. Again, they used to have a great vegan curry tofu dish but scrapped it for options that aren't vegan and that you can get many other places. As the chef told me when I asked "There ain't no tofu anywhere in the building anymore."
