Anyone ever crunch the research to see if one particular UY is the best?

I dont think there is one that is specific to all. More likely it would be what UY is the largest at each resort and that may mean it could attract people for add on,

But, people choose a UY based on travel so honestly, I don’t think it matters.

Even if there is a particular UY that fetches a few more dollars per point in resale, if that doesn't work for your travel pattern, it's not worth the potential drawbacks, IMHO.

Have not seen any data here. I can a
see a less common UY being able to sell for a few more dollars to someone looking to add-on to their less common UY (theory is to buy when it comes up because rare). But I can also see Sandi's theory that common use year have a wider net and be popular.

I think it’s important to remember that it’s likely most new (direct) buyers take whatever UY is sold to them. Only on forums like this do you find people choosing a UY. So the UY distributions you see don’t necessarily reflect “popular” UY - they reflect whatever UY the guides were instructed to sell at the time. And it’s anyone’s guess as to why the percentages vary so much from one resort to the next!

Yes - we bought direct, and didn'tknow about resale at the time. or the benefits of a strategic use year. But, based on the fact that we shared with our guide that we planned to use our points in January or February, he suggested a June Use year, and that has been working well for us for over 10 years, now. We also bought in October, so we got the current calendar year's points with no MFs, and have leveraged those "extra" points for years. Then, when looking to add on via resale, we became much more aware of the Use Year significance. It did take quite a while to find the right number of points at the right price, AND with the same Use Year!

In our case we knew about the importance of UYs but didn’t know about distribution/popularity of some UY. When we first look to buy, we wanted an August UY (we like to travel most in Fall Frenzy especially Oct-Dec, but our anniversary is late August so we occasionally travel then).

In some ways I wish I had held out for an Aug UY, but we lost the Aug UY contract we were going for and then the perfect Sep UY contract appeared so we decided to go for it. In some ways I’m not complaining too much, but Sep is the least popular UY overall while Aug is the 4th most popular. And we’ve definitely seen far more contracts - many better priced - pop up over time for Aug vs Sep.
