My DH and I are considering DVC. I am trying to determine what is the best usage year for us to pick.
We tend to visit the parks in either later April or November.
Any help is greatly appreciated!:confused3

I would say April or October would work well for those travel times.

April UY works well for travel April through December (as you can still bank points through the end of November) but is not the best for Jan, Feb, and March travel.

October UY works sell for travel October through June (as you can still bank points through the end of May) but is not the best for July, Aug, or Sept.

You may want to look at when you least likely travel as well. If you don't think you would ever go in the summer, then pick Oct UY.

If you don't think you would ever go in the winter, then go with April UY.

Good luck!

An October UY is great for visits between November and May, the cooler. less humid months at WDW.

Thanks to you who replied. Looks like October seems to be what you guys think we should go with...so we will!:thumbsup2

were you guys allowed to pick my guy just said it would be an aug 1 for my points every year also my guy never said i could buy from anywhere else but akv or blt i might have wanted other choices

We are going to go the resale route as we are fine with OKW. This way, we can wait for an Oct use year to come up for sale.

Ultimately it depends on when you'll make most trips. Given the info you've stated and assuming you'll be about equal on how often youl go for April vs November, I think there are 2 best months (April and Oct) and I tend to favor April. Either way one will be shortly before one trip and 6-7 months before the other. A late April trip will be about 6.5 months after the start of an Oct UY and a Nov trip will be about 7 to 7.5 months after the start of the April UY. Feb, March and August should be workable to stay out of banking issues but April/Oct will give you more time to deal with issues if you have to cancel or change your plans. I wouldn't let a great contract go by waiting for the perfect UY as long as you get one that should be workable for most trips. While I do think UY is important, it is not as important as price or the extra banked or current UY points you get on a resale. It sounds like you're just trying to get into the system since you mentioned "fine with OKW", I'd suggest that price is the ultimate factor assuming on site options but you should also consider expiration. It's likely that SSR or an extended OKW are likely your best values going forward. A non extended OKW would need to be maybe $15 per point less to justify that option on a normal size contract of say 200 points or more. As the contract size gets smaller, the price difference needs to increase a little due to the closing cost issue.

If you bought in through Disney, then yes, you can choose your UY. They typically offer you one but if you tell them you think a better one will work, they will allow you to buy that.

And, if you really want points at a sold out resort Disney will sell you those if you pusch the issue. They don't advertise those resorts as what they have is limited.

Plus, it is more expensive to buy points at the older resorts through Disney than going the resale route.

Yes, if you travel in August, getting the August UY is a good one!

We just got back from WDW and bought 160 points in BLT with a September UY.

Our guide originally wanted to assign us a February UY, but we don't have a vacation planned until August 2011, and he wanted us to be able to use our 2009 points for that vacation. So we got a September UY.

Reading this thread, it looks like we got the worst possible use year, as we usually travel in late August. :sad1:

We are still within the 10-day rescission period, so I am strongly considering calling my guide and switching our use year, or cancelling the purchase if they won't switch it.

If we usually travel in late August, our September UY is not good, right? What months would be better?

If we get an August UY, or the February UY that we were originally offered, our 2009 points will expire before we can use them for our August 2011 visit. In that case, are we better off renting the points, or just living with the September UY so that we can use them for our August 2011 visit?

Thanks very much for any help!

ETA: I just realized that I inadvertently cross-posted this question on two different threads. (I thought that that the post didn't go through, but I opened the wrong thread.) Sorry for the repeated post.

Do you have any children or planning on having any? Not trying to be noisy but you may want to take into account changes in your use pattern.
April UY would be good for your pattern now as well as summer vacation if needed in the future.

We chose Aug because we tend to travel in Aug,Sept, Nov and Feb. We knew any summer vacation would be in August and still allow us to bank into Feb if we did not use our points.

Will most of your vacations be in August? Then I would change it. If I have to cancel 31 days out I want the option to bank my points or reschedual before they expire.
Would a June UY work for you normally. I would go with the best UY for the life of the contract and not just the one vacation planned. You may want to rent out the 2009 points.

We have one child who is 13 years old. We don't like to take him out of school, so as long as he is going with us, we'd only be travelling during the February school break, the April school break, or the summer.

Although we just got back from a February visit (during school break), we usually travel in late August right before school starts.

I agree with the October UY recommendation. We are waiting for ROFR on a resale contract. I chose October UY because we are most likely to visit WDW during my kids' school breaks in November, December, February and April. We don't like WDW in the heat and would not likely travel there June through September.
