We live in FL so we don't own any winter clothing. DD just scheduled an impromptu cold weather getaway over New Years. She wanted to go out today and buy a coat and boots. If I recall from my northern living days, all of that stuff will be deeply discounted a day or two after Christmas. Am I remembering correctly? She leaves the 30th so she has a few days after Christmas to shop. Being a poor college student, she needs all the savings she can find.

In Wisconsin a lot of that kind of stuff is on sale now as part of the pre-Christmas retailing.

Is she thinking about getting stuff online?

Thanks! No, she was going to go in person to places like Kohls, JCP, Target, Ross, and TJ Maxx. We don't have a Burlington Coat Factory around here. I'm going by a nice sized Goodwill today, but I'm guessing the choices are extremely limited.

I am sure things will be discounted after the holidays, but there are many deals to be had now. With coupons and online discounts, places like Kohl's or JC Penny are having sales that can't be beat. The stores are trying to get their holiday shopping numbers up.

Where is she going and how long will she be gone? Some jackets are not warm enough for some locations.

Walgreens has gloves/hats/scarves buy one, get one half off all next week.
Kohl's has gloves/hats/scarves 40%-60% off Sunday and Monday; and women's outerwear 50% off.

Thanks everyone! Not a single winter coat or winter gloves to be found (cheap knit gloves but those won't be warm enough). We did find boots, hat, and a super warm scarf. We have a lead on a potential heavier coat from a friend that she can borrow, but we'll have to see if it fits. We also bought some really warm fleece type long john pants that she plans on wearing like yoga pants every day for the rest of her life because they are so comfy! :lmao: We are going to look online for gloves. I'll think she'll be warm enough with what we've pieced together (assuming the coat works). NYC on New Years. Ah.....to be young and nuts again! ;)

When we travel to PA to visit the grandparents, our first stop is shopping to buy snow pants, etc. We have always found better deals up there than in Texas. If she is not a difficult size she might just want to layer for the trip up and then go shopping when she gets there.

Lands End (a Wisconsin company ;)) has a sale on jackets. I can attest that they are very well made. You can pick "warmer", "warmer" and "warmest" depending on your needs.

Yes! A friend just told me that she was able to buy head to toe snow gear for her kids for $10 at a Goodwill store in the cold weather town they visited. Buy items online now at a store you can return to brick and mortar store (Kohl's, Walmart, etc. -- or all of the clothing I've bought off Amazon lately has had free returns), hold on to the receipts, and see if you can find a better deal at a local store or thrift store when you arrive. If you do luck out, return the unused items you bought ahead of time.

Has she experienced cold like this before? Standing outside for hours on end it could be COLD. I would also look for some earmuffs and super warm socks. Santa should also bring her some of those heat packs that you put in your pockets.

I grew up 60min from NYC.. you couldn't pay me to do that, but I hope she has fun!
