Best time to buy airline tickets for Dec

We are planning on flying to Orlando Dec 2-9. When is the best time to buy tickets? Do they tend to go up in price the closer you get or down or does it matter. I've only flown a couple times in the past so not really up on getting the best ticket price.

It does tend to vary. It seems that if I jump on what I think is a good fare now, it is sure to go way down closer to my trip. But, if I hold off, the fares only seem to go up!!! Go figure. What I do now is to set an amount I am happy with...then if I see a fare at, or below, that number I buy it. I am not going to worry about a total difference of $30 or so pp. I used to obsess over it....not anymore!!

I have probably bought most of my tickets for December in August or September from NWA or Spirit out of Detroit I think the earliest I have ever bought is June. Just as goofy4tink stated; just about the time you think you have them figured out something happens to change that. Just start watching, ask what others paid last year, and then just jump in and do it. Have fun planning...December is a great month to go!
