Best time to buy airfare?

Hi all! I'm going on a trip with my girlfriend 11/27-11/30 to AKL. Anyone have an idea as to the best time to buy airfare? I know normally a month or 2 out you should be ok. But looking now the prices seem outragous! Is this because it's still too far out or because it's the day after Thanksgiving? Not too sure how holiday travel works! Normally 2 months out Newark NJ to MCO is about 200-300 round trip but to book today it's almost 500 round trip. Am I better off booking with miles or will the price go down as I get closer?

Prices just don't go down all that often! I've had my Nov flights (Sat after Thanksgiving...Boston to LAX) for months now. I'm not entirely sure that waiting until a month or two out is going to show less expensive fares. The reason airlines would lower fares at that point was to fill seats. But, fewer and fewer planes are flying with more than a few empty seats. So, they seldom feel the need to lower fares.
Flying over this particular weekend can be expensive. I flew on Thanksgiving Day once....it was the least expensive day to fly Boston to Orlando.

Ok thanks for the info! I have miles I can book with I just wanted to save them :/ but o well that's why they are there use in an emergency!
