Best time for Character Dining in Disneyland

I see some of these character dining restaurants open early in the morning at the hotel resorts before the park opens. I was thinking about reserving their earliest option, but not sure if all the characters will be there. I don’t want to go there and have hardly any characters there to greet my daughter. Is it better to go later, when more of them are awake and at the restaurants, or does Disney make the experience just as good right when they open? I want to go at the best timeframe when we have the best opportunity to see the characters.

The characters will be available when the restaurant opens. They may not be there exactly upon opening, but they will be available even to the people that have the earliest reservations.
