What's the best rides to ease kids into the more "thrilling" rides?

IOW I am not about to take the kids on Rock N Rollercoaster or Tower of Terror. Maybe one day but not now. So what are some of the more tame roller coasters or simulation type rides to gauge if they will really like the "good" rides like I do?

I know my son (4 at the time) went of a coaster in MK and said he didn't really like the way it made his stomach feel. Now, he never got sick nor was he traumatized but he did make that comment. Not sure which one it was but it may have had something to do with Goofy or Mickie Mouse???

I'm just hoping he will at least try some of the better rides so I can have some fun too. ::yes:: . But, in reality, the trip is for the kids.

Oh, kids are now 7 and 5.

DD5 was 3 the last time we went on rides, and though she could go on all the 40" rides, we tried Splash Mountain, and when she was afraid of that, we decided not to push her anymore.

This time, we started with the Goofini. It's great because it's over pretty much before it starts. She liked it, so we went onto Splash Mountain, which she liked. Then, Soarin'. Then Star Tours. After that, my normally very cautious daughter suddenly adopted the motto, "I'll try anything once, and if I don't like it, I don't have to do it again." We did TOT, which she hated, but at least she tried it! Then EE, which she also hated, but she tried it! And Dinosaur, which she thought was just okay. She was just a 1/2 inch shy of Primeval whirl, or else she would have done that one, too. I was really proud of her. In fact, it was one of the highlights of the vacation, seeing how she stepped outside her comfort zone and tried new things.

Barnstormer/Goofini and Thunder Mountain are both very tame and are great introductions to the bigger rides, but...

All rides at WDW are relatively "tame" for amusement park rides.

With our kids, if they were tall enough, we let them ride - there's nothing at WDW that I wouldn't let a 5yo ride.

I agree. My wife on the other hand...

This is a hard one. If I considered WDW a trip for the kids, and my kids didn't like the way thrill rides made their stomach feel, but I wanted to start to push them in another direction, I might start on rides that bring in darkness, and try splash mountain. Can he handle Soarin/heights? What about splash mountain? What about the ride in Norway?

If the answer to those three are yes, I think Splash mountain might be worth a try, but that will definitely drop their stomach.

A thrill ride is a thrill because of what it does to your stomach - if they don't like that, then maybe look at other activities.

I've never even done SPlash Mountain. I just read another thread that mentioned it had a "drop". I just never did it because i don't want to walk around in wet clothes during the day. Maybe I'll look into it.

My son did Soarin fine when we went last time. He was youger then then my daughter is now so I'm pretty sure they'll both do it.

Whatever one you come to first!!

Disney doesn't have any really thrill rides. They are all quite acceptable for 5 yr olds.

I would just see which ever ride you get to first and get in line.

I'm curious, if they are tall enough why not RNC? It is very very smooth and a great ride and why not TOT?

It really depends on the child, but most rides are just fine for anyone of any age.

I've only ridden each one of them once or maybe twice. I just know my kids and a rollercoaster that's in the dark and goes upside down probably won't go over so well. And ToT isn't too bad but I am just trying to ease them into this. I'm hoping a couple of the more tame rides early in the week will help them to warm up to the more thrilling rides.

In my experience, you shouldn't bother trying to ease them into it. Kids ride stuff like that when they're ready. Some will go when they're 4 or 5 and others wait until they're 13. Some people never do it.

Ask them if they want to ride something. If they do, take them. If they don't, don't. If they ask what it does, just read what is on the map. Don't put you own "be cautious!" tone into it.

The easiest way to scare a kid is to let them know the grown-up thinks there is a reason they might be scared.

Disney doesn't have real thrill rides by today's standards. Their rides are all very tame. Closest things they have to the real deal are RnRc, EE and ToT. Everything else is wimpy, as far as thrills go. And even the three I mentioned won't be winning any awards for thrills.

i agree - depends on the child. if my kids are tall enough, i am ok with them riding at wdw. one of my kids is a thrill seeker - so she was pretty young when she did goofy roller coaster, splash mountain, soarin, etc...

my other little guy tried goofy and was scarred for life :rotfl:, so he is pretty choosy now...

because of this, we have to split up a bit when we go...:thumbsup2

BTMRR and Splash are the ones I'd try first, and then maybe move on from there. One thing I've learned is that kids always surprise you with their level of tolerance, one way or another!

BTMRR is the one that I think is closed when we go. Although I seem to remember it might be opening near the end of our trip but we might miss it by a day.

Splash mountain should be easy to get them on. Do you get soaked on it?
