Best scooter rental - I'm on crutches - am I allowed to use a scooter?

I'm going to Disneyland in 2 weeks on my first-ever solo trip and I'm on crutches for the foreseeable future. I don't want to cancel the trip, and crutches all over the parks sound like a nightmare. I think the best option is a scooter.

What is the best company lately? I've read the forum and there seems to be some differences of opinion about service quality.

Can anyone give me advice about someone with temporary limitations like me using a scooter? My mom has been in a wheelchair since the 80's and I'm very sensitive to not looking for privileges I'm not entitled to. I can use the crutches short distances but not long ones.

I don't want to cancel my trip, but I find I'm at a loss.

Deckert's is my go to! They have great prices and awesome customer service. Their number is 714-542-5607.

You can most definitely use a scooter!! There are no special privileges, contrary to what a lot of people think! You just don't have to physically wait in line. You get a return time (like a FP) for most rides, one at a time like a FP and when you return you use the handicap entrances. The CM's are awesome about helping you and directing you. Some rides you just take the scooter right in line (not many rides in DL but almost all in DCA).

If you've never used one before, just go slow until you feel comfortable. People think it's ok to run right in front of you and sometimes you can't stop in time! I can't tell you how many people I've almost hit, not by my doing!!

Enjoy your trip!!

If you do a search you'll find Deckert's is highly recommended here on the board.
We used Apple Scooter on our last trip. And everything was fine.
They delivered and pick-up the scooter where we were staying. I'd use them again.

On our last trip my DIL's plantar fasciitis began to act up and we need a scooter quick. I had anticipated the possibility of her having a foot problem and checked briefly into scooters before the trip. So when we need a scooter fast, I could only remember Apple Scooter. We gave them a call and they delivered one in a couple of hours.

A scooter will make your trip so much better. Having a scooter in the parks is nice. Having a scooter to get to and from the parks is even better. That's why it's best to rent from an off-site company.

have fun

Don't feel bad at all about using mobility devices while you are in need of them. You can stop by the information booth and grab a map that will point you where to go for each ride as some, especially in Disneyland, can be quite confusing. The more popular rides will have a return time like fp that you can use in addition to fp. Most you'll be able to take the scooter right up to the ride vehicle but if you're more comfortable you could just use your crutches through the line.

I use ScootAround. Great service and pricing.

Whichever company you choose to go with, it would be worthwhile to ask if they can add a crutch holder, or something similar that might work, so that you can bring your crutches along with you. That way you can maneuver to ride vehicles.

Please use the scooter! There is absolutely nothing wrong with it, even though you can walk somewhat. There is a lot of walking involved in a DL trip when mobility is an issue. We have a family member with partial mobility issues & using a scooter made a world of difference. You can park the scooter to transfer onto rides if you wish, many people do. I hope you have a wonderful solo trip. I see no reason to cancel your trip!

Be aware that when CM's ask if you can walk a short distance to the ride that you may also have to stand for 10-15 minutes at the end of that walk. So if that will be an issue for you, be sure to ask how long you may have to stand.

I have an injury to my foot and ordinarily just use a custom orthotic in otherwise regular shoes. My podiatrist wanted me to use a walking boot for Disneyland because of the amount of time on my feet. He said if I couldn't handle that I should rent a scooter or wheelchair. I was sure I was going to make it through the parks and one walk into Downtown Disney had me on the phone trying to find a company with a scooter available.
I also sometimes felt weird in the scooter because I can walk, but I clearly could not walk all day and there's no way I could have made it through the entire trip. In hindsight I wish that I had set-up something in advance so I would have known what my options were (especially because I ended up renting from Scooter Village which had good customer service but was more expensive).

Thank you all so much. My husband thinks I should cancel, but I really want to go. I really appreciate the support. If I do go, I will definitely rent a scooter in advance as there is no way I can get between the hotel and the parks.

This is a fantastic idea. I had no clue this was possible.

I've pushed my mother's wheelchair in Disneyland on many, many trips going back to the 80's and it can be a nightmare. People never notice and then blame you if they back into you or trip. Several years ago we were there on the night of one the POTC movie premiers and crowds were awful and we had reservations at BB (we were idiots). I was pushing my mom through a big crowd when this guy just stopped in the middle of the path with no warning. The footrests of my mom's chair bumped into him becuase I didn't have time to stop and he screamed at me so much a cast member came over to find out what was wrong. My poor mom was so humiliated.

I like Deckert also and have used them many times.

One thing you might want to do is think about the hotel you are staying at. At some hotels I have had difficulty getting the scooter to fit into the room especially if you have two Queen beds in the room. This is something to think about. You might want to call your hotel and let them know you will be using an ECV.

Wow, after years of thinking of this kind of thing for my mom, it never even crossed my mind to apply it to me. Thank you!!! I'm staying at the Carousel, which I really like. I'll call them today.

If you get an accessible room at the Carousel there is no worry. They only come with one queen bed. I actually parked my scooter in the bathroom and had plenty of room.

I just called Deckert's to rent a scooter, and they're not allowed to rent to someone at my hotel. I'm staying at the Carousel, and apparently they've had problems with the staff there. The woman on the phone was lovely and very apologetic. So, I'll be trying someplace else. Strange.

Now that you mention it, I think the Carousel has one contracted company that you have to go through. I can't remember the name. I'll see if I can find it and post it here.

They recommended DNR Mobility, but their prices were pretty high, even with the "Carousel discount", so I reserved through Apple. I have to meet them at the Carousel, they won't do dropoff, but that works for me.

Make sure you bring the charger with you every day! I had a horrible experience with the scooter I rented from Apple, kept having to find a place to charge it throughout the day, which was quite a pain!! There aren't many places you can charge a scooter in DL!

I second this. And if you get your scooter and it looks trashed, I would tell them to bring a newer one. Chances are the trashed one will die on you in the middle of the park and you will have to push it out to the Esplanade to meet their tech. Been there, done that. I rent from ScootAround now.

It's too bad you can't use Deckert's! I used them this past weekend and the scooter was great! I charged it each night and it lasted from early morning to late night every day! And that was going back to our room each day for a break and traveling all over both parks every day.
