Google maps and AAA seem to have very different opinions on the best route to take to get from Buffalo to the Auto Train.

We are checking to see which our GPS agrees with, but would love some opinions from those who have done the route.

AAA suggests a route that appears to be mostly large highways going through Pittsburg. It is about an hour longer than the route google maps gave us, but that route appears to have fewer 4 lane highways.

We are doing this at night if that makes a difference.

Thanks

When I lived in Buffalo and we traveled to Florida, that is how we went- 90 to 79 in PA, then into WV. So at least that part would be fine In my experience. However, I do not know how to get to Lorton, VA on that route. I'm sure someone else here will!

Personally I'd go to 17 south then pick up I-81 in Binghamton, take that south through PA, then head over to DC area. I bet that's the route Google had you going.

I just checked google maps and this route would be about 2 hours longer than what google suggested.

Buffalo is a tough place to head south from.

The route that google gives is to head directly south from Buffalo on mostly state routes (219).

You can play around with the routing... for example if you want to go through Harrisburg the mapping has you working your way to Corning and then heading south. This is about 8 minutes longer than the default route.

I did a Google maps from Buffalo to Lorton and it has you going the same way we go fromAnnapolis to Buffalo mostly (we are Buffalo natives so have done this a lot, I just wasn't sure where Lorton actually was). It takes you down into PA onto route 15, then south to Harrisburg. That is a fine way to go as well. We travel south/east from East Aurora and head down into PA at the Painted Post exit on the Thruway. ( this is using the 400, then Route 19).

That is a lot of country driving though in NY and can be very dicey in the winter. We almost got stuck heading to Buffalo that way once in the winter. It's also very windy since you said you were driving at night. But that is the best way we have found from our house in MD to Buffalo.
