We are planning a WDW trip for May & I am trying to stay on a low budget. I would really like to keep meals between $500-$600 for our family of 4 for 5 days. I know we want to eat at O'hana & Le Cellier (at lunch to keep the cost down), probably Planet Hollywood too. Can anyone recommend some lower priced restaurants that you like?

I would say go Quick Service. The prices aren't so bad, and you don't have to tip. If you go onto the Disney site and look at the QS meal plan, it will give you all the QS restaurants.

I can give you my favorites at each park....

Magic Kingdom ~ Casey's Corner (they have lunch and dinner)
Epcot ~ Liberty Inn (Lunch and dinner)
Hollywood ~ Starring Rolls (Breakfast lunch and dinner)

I don't know if there is one at Animal Kingdom

Downtown Disney ~ Earl of Sandwich (Breakfast lunch dinner) or Wolfgang Puck (lunch and dinner)

Hope this helps.

The Plaza at MK would be my choice. We love it so much we are even willing to *waste* a Dining Plan credit on it.

:thumbsup2Try splitting 3 meals at counter services between the four of you. It'll probably be enough food. Ask for ice water-FREE!!

Nothing worse than throwing away half of an $8.00 meal because the kids weren't "hungry"

Other good choices are Earl of Sandwich in Downtown Disney
Flame tree BBQ in AK
Columbia Harbour House in MK

I've seen on here that some counter services have combo meals like 1/2 chicken with 2 sides. Could split it with a child or even have the 2 kids to share. All Ears website usually has all the up to date menus so that you can go over them and "plot out" how you most likely would eat during the day. I know i did to kind of get a feel how much I might spend a day. Of course you have to figure in for those unexpected mickey snack too ;)

My suggestion would be to eat breakfast in your room. Have a large lunch at many of the resorts. We usually go to Grand Floridian Cafe or Kona at the Poly
when we are at the magic kingdom. For Dinner we just do snacks.
Portobellas in DTD is great for lunch ask to sit on the outside deck.

PS bring your own water with you.

trip in June with a family of four, we averaged about $30/QS meal. The total ranged from around $23 (for a large pizza and drinks at our resort) - $37 (Wolfgang Puck Express). There were shared meals in some of those cases and we probably could have saved a couple of dollars more if we had remembered to skip the fries on some of the combos. We ended up throwing away fries at almost every meal. There is a wide variety of food available at QS locations so you don't have to have just burgers and pizza all of the time.

Other good choices are Earl of Sandwich in Downtown Disney
Flame tree BBQ in AK
Columbia Harbour House in MK

Those are all m top CS picks.:thumbsup2

We also share and drink water. Also, bakeries are great. Most of sandwiches that are a good size for around $6. Plus ,y 5 year old and I will often share a cupcake or muffin and the two of us can never finish them because they are so rich.

Cosmic Rays in the Magic Kingdom has some great rotisserie meals that can easily be shared.
For table service, the Plaza (Magic Kingdom) is very inexpensive. Also Via Napoli in Epcot, if you all can share a large pizza. Or two can share an individual pizza. Seriously, the individual is about the size of the hubcaps on a car.

Hi, AidensMommy!

We've done many a Disney trip on a strict food budget! You seem to be looking at approximately $100-120/day for food. That's actually fairly easy. Breakfast in the room, one TS meal, and one CS meal you just might be able to pull off each day, depending on what you order.

I see from your signature that you have two little ones, age 4 and 2. If the baby is still under 3 at the time of your trip, you don't need to pay for food at family style & buffet restaurants - something you might want to keep in mind. 'Ohana is a major expense, but not quite as bad if you don't have to pay for one of your kids.

I'd suggest working backwards, figuring out how much your must-do meals will cost. Then figure out how much money you're working with for the remainder of your meals. (Don't forget to add tax & tip at table service restaurants.)

Counter Service meals are typically seen as cheaper, and I think you'll get a good bit of response on those. (I agree with the mention of Earl of Sandwich, btw... and if you have a birthday near your trip date, sign up for their email club to get a coupon for a free sandwich, good about 1 week before birthdate and up to 3 weeks after - basically a whole month that it's valid.)

My family is particularly fond of Table Service restaurants, so I'll tell you how we've saved money at those:

  • Order water to drink. Adult fountain drinks can cost $3/meal. Two adults makes it $6... and sometimes (like in some Downtown Disney restaurants) the kid's meals do not include beverages, which means another $2-3 for each child. So save yourself that $6-12/meal. (Drinks are included at some family style & buffet meals though, so enjoy what you'd like!)
  • Share entrees - goes for both adults and children. Sometimes, there may be a meal that you can order and either the other adult or a child can share it with you. Liberty Tree Tavern (MK) has some big meals we've shared before - especially the Pilgrim's Feast is PLENTY for two people at $14.99, meaning it's costing just $7.50 each! You may not often be able to share a kid's meal, but my kids have shared one meal at Chefs de France (EP) - there's a kid's meal with pasta and chicken strips, and I have one kid who likes pasta and the other likes chicken strips - makes it more affordable!
  • Order appetizers as your entree. Just this past week, I got the Heaven on Earth (baby back ribs) at Raglan Road (DTD) for $14, whereas ribs as a meal in other TS restaurants might cost $25! It may not be served with a side dish, but I don't always need a side dish with a tasty meal like that! Appetizers in other restaurants might appeal to you the same way.
  • Look for coupons. Disney World restaurants take coupons? Well, some of them do... Rainforest Cafe has had some coupons and rewards on their website, and T-Rex has accepted them as well (same company owns both). Sometimes you can get $.99 kids meals with an adult entree. Right now, I believe there's a Planet Hollywood coupon available online, valid through the end of December for $10 off a $20 purchase - maybe they'll have a new coupon in the new year. If you're interested in any of those, do a web search for printable coupons for those restaurants as your trip draws closer.
  • Dessert only. Once in a while, an ice cream sundae makes a great meal - especially when you're on vacation! Maybe go to Beaches & Cream or Ghiradelli for a sweet treat, and make that a meal!

Since your trip is months away. Buy Disney gift cards now thru the time you leave. We get GC's in our stocking and for birthdays too. Our Von's grocery store has them as low as $25. Makes it easy to buy them if your on a food budget too. We will be bringing (flying) some breakfast items for the room as well as granola bars and things for snacks in the parks. :thumbsup2

Thanks NorweJenNY, I found this very helpful! I think we are on the same page as you. I would really like to do a TS & CS meal each day. We plan on eating breakfast in the room, just cereal, muffin or something lite. I went through the menus of all the restaurants we plan to go to & added what the total cost would be. I came up with 5 TS & 5 CS meals for $470 which is under budget so I'm happy with that. That doesn't include tip & tax so it will be over $500 all together. The ways I plan to save money is having the kids share 1 meal (they are both light eaters & I will feed them lots of snacks throughout the day) & taking a juice box in each restaurant to keep from paying for drinks for them (I hope that is allowed?). I definitely think we can stay in our budget after looking at the menus & reading your helpful post. Thanks again!

Most kids meals come with a drink included in the price. Many restaurants also offered our 2 year old a drink for free. I'd bring the juice boxes but you may not need to use them. Make sure to check the menu as I would say that 95% or more of the kids meals included a beverage.

Hi there

For restaurants we absolutely love Wolfgang Puck Express(DTD/QS), Casey's Corner(MK/QS), Liberty inn(E/QS), Yorkshire fish & chips(E/QS) Pizza Planet, my kids love it(HS/QS). Raglan Road(DTD/TS), Tony's(MK/TS), Liberty Treen Tavern(MK/TS), 9 Dragons(E/TS), Y&Y(AK/TS)

I don't know where you are planning on staying but I love playing around on the disneyworld.com site. It's something I like to do so I plugged in prices for 2 adults and 2 children going in May when there is still the room discount promotion; this is what I got;

CBR std pirate room $2717.06 with QS/8 day base tickets
CBR std non themed room $2565.16 with QS/8 day base tickets/ $1991.37 with the 8 day base ticket but no dining plan.

Pop century $2214.78 with QS/8 day base tickets. The cost without meals $1640.99

If you want the table serve dining plan it worked out to about $300 more than QS.

Looks to me like CBR with QS would be your best value. You would be in a bigger room than a value as well as having a fridge as a standard option.

I wish we had gone when our kids were that young. They all count as adults now and we have more than two.

While the large Pizza at Via Napoli seems high priced, it will feed a family. We find Via Napoli to be a deal at WDW. Our last bill was $50 for 3 adults with an appetizer.
We also recommend The Plaza at MK for a budget meal.

Thanks for this! I'm the same way & I have played around with prices to see what it's going to cost us to go. When I checked the Value Resorts, even if they were to offer the free dining plan in May (which I'm sure they are not) for us the stay at ASMU with an upgrade to the DDP from QSDP was going to cost $2200. If we stay offsite at a condo, buy tickets from undercover tourist & eat everywhere we want to eat on property, the cost is going to be $1800. That includes everything, gas (we will be driving), room, tickets, food & parking everyday. I feel like I'm coming out much better staying off property. What do you think?

BTW, my 2 yr old will be 3 when we go so we will have to pay for him as well.

We love Sanaa and the Grand Floridian Cafe. Both are quite reasonable with some interesting menu choices and the food is terrific. Good luck!

Lunch is usually cheaper....

Liberty Tree Tavern lunch is pretty good as well.

You can get a nice quick service at Sunshine Seasons in Epcot, with a lot of variety.

If you will have a "condo off property" you can eat breakfast in your room, and pack snacks and bottled water to save some $$. If you do an early morning, have lunch before you leave the parks, and then return for an afternoon rest/swim, you can eat dinner either off property or in your condo before heading back to the parks in the evening. Then have an evening treat while in the parks.
