Hello everyone. I just found this site and thought it might be a great resource for me. Here is my situation. I am recently widowed and have an 8 y/o son. I would really like to take a dream vacation for him this summer since he has had such a tough time.

What would you recommend for a father and his son in this situation?

Thanks for your help!

I bet your son would love AKL (Animal Kingdom Lodge). We stayed there for 8 days in May. My son was 9. If you book a savannah view, you can sit on your balcony and watch the animals. Any time we were in our room, he was on that balcony. You can order food from room service or get it from the food court, then eat out on your balcony and watch the animals. My son says that when we go back to Disney, we HAVE to stay there again. If your son likes to swim, I would also say maybe BC (Beach Club) or YC (Yacht Club), because they have SAB (Storm Along Bay), which is supposed to be a fabulous pool.

 :earboy2: :earboy2: :earboy2:

My 10 year old son really enjoyed All Star Movies and is now excited for our upcoming Pop Century stay. Kids seem to really like the bright, fun theming of the values. That said, I am so sorry for your loss. I was just one year younger than your son when I lost my Dad over 30 years ago. The two of you have each other and you will get through this. Have fun on your trip and God Bless!

Animal kingdom is awesome if he likes animals and yacht and beach club do have the best pool. You also want to consider proximity to the park you are most likely to visit the most.

I am sure many of us would also like to give you other planning tips, such as character meals and attractions. Can you tell us a little about your son? what are his hobbies? favorite movies etc? would he still be into characters, would he enjoy thrill rides?

Hey there! First of all I wanted to tell you that I am so sorry to hear about both of your losses and will be praying for the both of you. Secondly I wanted to mention that if you ever have any detailed questions feel free to message me on here. Theres a private messaging system for specific questions, and I've been to Disney 12 times so kinda know my way around the actual parks and hotels pretty well. At the bottom of this it shows the hotels I have been to though, and as a kid I have to say (I am a girl but a severe tomboy) I really hated the fluffy hotels like the Grand Floridian and the Boardwalk. I honestly think that the AKL sounds like a great fit for the both of you, however I cannot recommend that one since I have never stayed nor visited it, but have heard a lot of great things about it. You can see Animals from your room and you can also learn a lot about them through animal guides they have there. :earboy2:

The Caribbean is also a fun choice. It's very colorful and upbeat, with a private lake of it's own where people can rent boats and spend an afternoon out on the water. That's always fun, and there are bicycle trails there along with an awesome game room. It's just a casual, upbeat atmosphere that he might enjoy. If I could use one word to describe this resort it would be cheerful. :earseek:

The All-Stars are simply fantastic as well. They are considered value resorts so get looked down upon a lot, but I can't wait for our next visit to them. I would take these any day over the Grand Floridian. They are rather colorful, have two shaped swimming pools at each of them, one right up front by each food court and one right out back thats a bit smaller and these tend to be the less crowded ones. There are 3 All Star resorts, Movies, Music, and Sports, and everything is themeed around them. Like the Music one has gigantic musical instruments outside of the buildings, and the Movies looks like a walk down a type of Hollywood Avenue between buildings. The Sports food court has clear statues of football players and other athletes, and pictures line the front halls according to the resorts theme. Like actors for the Movies, Athletes for the Sports, and Musicians for the Music. :rockband:

One thing to keep in mind, is that kids tend to be picky eaters, and I've found that food courts tend to appeal to them. You wont find food courts at any of the Deluxe resorts. Those are only at the moderate and value resorts. That is my big problem with Deluxe resorts, their small slection of qiuck foor. Of course this is because most fast food is just that, fast food, and tends to be greasy fries and everything like that. So the selection of healthier food done quickly is much smaller at the deluxe resorts. To eat there you generally have to sit down in a restaurant or order room service (I'm not fond of either of those). :jumping4:

Another resort that he might like is the Coronado Springs resort. I've heard good things about it but have not been there before, just to visit. You might want to try showing him pictures of different resorts and see what he responds to and what he does not, that way you can get a feel for the type of theming he might want to be immersed into. I wish you the best of luck with your plans though and if you need any help or anything (this goes for everyone) feel free to PM me any time. :) :earboy2:

I forgot to mention that you might want to consider renting a car while there, that way you can venture out of the parks as well and perhaps to Universal Studio's Islands of Adventure. If your sons a rollar coaster fanatic its a great park! I live right by Cedar Point and am pretty used to world reknowned rollar coasters, so it takes a lot to actually get me excited about a theme park, but this one takes the cake. He'd probably really enjoy that. Univeral Studios is interesting, but I think an 8 year old would perhaps enjoy the rollar coasters more. Just thoguht I would mention it. :) :earboy2:

I, too, would like to offer my sympathies to you and your DS. I was fortunate to have both of my parents until I was well into my 40's. I'm sure the two of you will stick together and get through this difficult time.
Having stayed at AKL with my DW, I would stay there, hands down. Of course, we have never stayed at the POP or AS resorts so I can't comment on them. It might be a good idea to split your stay: a few nights at AKL and a few at the POP or AS. Whichever you choose, you will both enjoy it. Take care and welcome to the DIS!

live4vacations,

Hi! I am sorry to hear about your loss! What a tough thing for you and your so to go through. :grouphug:

I just got back from a mother/daughter (11 yr old) DIS vacation myself. I did a lot of research and if I can help, PM me anytime.

Is this his or your first trip to WDW?

We went for 9 nights/ 10 days. That seemed to be a good choice. 1 week is a little short for a relaxing trip. This gave us time to relax and run around too.

I can give you as much info as you'de like about what to see and what could be skipped for his age. If you can tell me what he likes and what he doesn't. Like, for example, my daughter likes thrill rides, anything scary and ones that make Mom scream!

We stayed at the POP Century. There are links to all the resorts on this site. POP is bright and ALL Disney, great for kids!

If you can PM me your plans, like when you think your going and how long, and what your thinking in terms of parks and all that, I would be happy to help you out. I have lots of links and phone #'s that can help you. I already researched so much, I would be happy to help in any way I can :)

PG

ps, you need to go into your control panel and set up to except PM's if you didnt already do that.

A friend in a similar situation as you planned the same activity. The boys got to pick the hotel based on the website photographs and they picked the Board Walk Inn based on the photographs of the pool. Those boys are about the same ages as your son.

So sorry for your loss. May you make some new, happy memories on this trip.

Very sorry for your loss.
As for which hotel to choose, look over the information on allearsnet.com and disneyworld.com. You can see pictures of the hotels and a lot of info.
If you plan on doing Magic Kingdom the most then you would probably want one of the hotels on the monorail. If you like Epcot and the Studios, the Boardwalk area is really great since you can walk or take a boat to either park.
I must add that if you stay in the Boardwalk area please try Spoodles for breakfast. My DS (now 14) and I love their breakfast.....especially their breakfast pizza........TOO good!
You may want to consider splitting your stay between different Disney hotels. Many people on these boards do this and have had great experiences. Disney will even move your luggage for you.
Good luck deciding. Keep reading these boards for great ideas.

Here are suggestions for any budget:

If you want to go for broke, I would suggest the Beach or Yacht Club... best pool on property!

Next step down: Animal Kingdom lodge. I feel the atmosphere is very masculine, and what 8 year old boy wouldn't LOVE to "live" among the animals?

For the moderate, I would suggest PO-R Alligator Bayou. He would love the fishin' hole, the playground is really nice as is the newly refurbished pool and slide. You may also use the pool at PO-FQ, which is a really cool serpent slide!

For Value, I would stay at AS-Mo in the Toy Story Building. What 8 year old boy wouldn't LOVE to stay with Buzz and Woody!

If you go to the official Disney Website they have virtual tours of all of the Disney owned resorts. You and he could go to that site to help you make your decision. The link is: http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/index?bhcp=1. You can put in like you were going to book a package, and when it comes to choosing a resort, you will find a link in the bottom left corner of the picture of the resort for the virtual tour. I did one just to check it out on the Beach Club yesterday, and it was fabulous. It showed the interior of the rooms, the pool, the recreation, the lobby and dining.

I am so sorry for yours and your son's loss. I hope that this trip will help in healing the emotional wounds and put a smile on both of your faces!

Have a great time!

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I'd recommend checking out the Wilderness Lodge. Great theme for boys, fun restaurants, close proximity to MK and Fort Wilderness with petting zoos, pony rides, and lots of other recreation options. There's a good FAQ thread that will fill you in on all the extras.

Also, check out allearsnet.com for more resort details and photos.

Good luck with your planning!

Another advantage to BWI or another Epcot resort is the proximity to the ESPN club. If he's into sports that place is a lot of fun.

I am so sorry for your lost.

a Disney trip will cheer both of you up.

what do you like?

desert - CSR - Colornado Springs Resort (moderate)

mountains - WL/VWL - Wilderness Lodge (deluxe)

Hawaii - Polyn - Polynesian

Florida - CBR - Carribean Beach Resort (moderate), OKW Old Key West (HAFH), GF - Grand Floridian (deluxe)

Disney's version of the future - Contemporary (deluxe) - this is getting a BIG rehab.

atlantic seaboard - BW, BC/YC (all deluxes and HAFH) Broadwalk, beach club and yatch club

camping - FW cabins (HAFH) - fort wilderness

New york - SSR (HAFH)

the South - PO - Port Orleans (moderate) either French Quarter or Riverside

how could I forget
Africia - AKL - Animal Kingdom Lodge (deluxe)

then there are the value resorts
All star sports - just what it says - big Icons
All star movie
All star music

then my favorite of the value resort is
Pop century - it tries in Icons, statues, and signs to tell the history of this country from 1950 to 1990 -it is alot of fun - for adults - kids can either love it or hate it - but hey they are at WDW....

the values are without a doubt the cheapest
then the moderates
then the deluxes

Home away from home - HAFH - generally are between moderates and deluxes for a studio - anything besides a studio they are higher.

HAFH - except for FW cabins - are DVC resorts - studios, 1, 2 or 3 bedrooms.

If you let us know a little more info.........you'll get LOTS more help! When exactly are you thinking about going? How long? Budget concerns......value, moderate, or deluxe?

Here on the DIS, you have some VERY experienced WDW travelers. We try to help each other out and share the best rates, discount codes, restaurant info, touring hints, etc.

The best thing you can do is study! Read these boards and you will discover that, to make the most out of your vacation and have the best time possible, you have to do some serious planning!

Welcome to the DIS. :flower1:

condolences to you and your son on your loss...

my first thought was POR for the fishin' hole! next was all star sports if your son enjoys sports... wilderness lodge has that national park campy feel about it...

my next thoughts were "IT'S DISNEY!" no matter where you choose, it's sure to be a great way to put your cares aside for a few days and enjoy yourselves...

best wishes!

I think part of the fun of going to WDW is planning the trip. I would suggest that you go to www.allearsnet.com/acc/faq_hot.htm and see what resorts are available at WDW and which ones might appeal to you and your son.

For possible discounts check these boards and also www.mousesavers.com for room discounts which can be as large as 40 percent.

To book a vacation with WDW call 1-800-828-0228. You can call this number and touch #4 on your phone and order a WDW planning video and other information. I would call now and get the planning kit.

I think either the Wilderness Lodge or Animal Kingdom Lodge would be excellent choices for you two.

Have a great time.

So sorry to hear about your recent loss - my prayers for you and your son

Having taken my son down for special boys trips, I suggest the following as "best in class"

Contemporary Resort - especially if you want to be next to the Magic Kingdom - the monorail is neat and you can walk to the MK in about 10 minutes

Animal Kingdom Lodge - nothing like seeing the animals from your room (assuming you have Savannah view) - great atmosphere, nice pool, lots of things to do and see and right next to my son's favourite park - Animal Kingdom

Beach Club/Yacht Club - if you son likes cool pools. you cannot beat Stormalong Bay for best pool on Disney property (about 3 acres in size with sand in the pool and a great waterslide)

Port Orleans Riverside - as others mentioned, Ol Man Island is a great pool complex, there is fishing as well and also carriage rides and the bayou area is rustic and a touch rugged

Wilderness Lodge - great lobby, soaring ceilings, rugged decor, fun pools and always a treat to take a boat to the Magic Kingdom

All Stars Sports - fun place for "boys" to go and enjoy themselves at a low price with lots of other kids around

Enjoy!
