Best remedy for sunburn

I love Ocean Potion. Used this last trip when we got burnt after Discovery Cove =)

While it's good to have some sort of treatment plan available, just in case... really the best thing to do is keep reapplying that sunscreen so you don't burn in the first place. ;)

I have found that I only need to reapply it once midday if I'm not swimming. It may be different for you. But it's not so much trouble to put it on before I get dressed in the morning and then once more in the middle of the day. If we're swimming we do morning, pre-swim and post-swim. That's if we're going to be outside all day. If we have a half day in the park and then just dinner that evening, or Disney Quest, or something that's mainly indoors then I don't reapply.

Aloe, aloe, aloe, aloe, aloe. I cannot stress that enough.

And when you are inthe parks, apply and reapply often.

I agree! Find a small bottle of sunscreen and take it to the parks with you. I was just at Disney World over the 4th of July, and I managed to not get a sunburn (I am very fair skinned) because I kept re-applying sunblock every few hours. And don't forget to do your scalp and your ears, those can get burned very easily!

I agree with taking sunscreen along to the parks. Being a nurse,I definitely say the best thing is to avoid sunburn. The continuous sprays like Neutragena are really convenient for the parks. Also, the Ibuprofen or any anti-inflammatory works by reducing your inflammatory response. However, you have to take it right away.

very pale and have always burnt through sunblock but I found the secret. You need to look for sunblock with titanium dioxide in it. It's thick like diaperene and hard to rub in but well worth it. Banana boat makes a spf50 baby that has it in there. The only thing I don't burn through. Otherwise after a sunburn vinegar or aloe are the best two things I've known of and I've had some doosies.

Aloe with lidocaine works well. You can find it at any drug store.

Living in the South and having a pool, despite careful application of sunscreen, I've certainly had a few sunburns.

All of the aloe tips are great, but the absolute BEST thing that you can do when you get a sunburn is take Advil. It really works well for the pain.

Having said that, I also echo what other folks have said. With proper sunscreen and clothing, you can definitely avoid getting a sunburn while at WDW.

Have fun! September is a great time to go!

:thumbsup2 Blue Lizard has an excellent product with this in it!

We're old fashioned here - aloe, either straight from my plant at home or from a botlle of 100% aloe gel that I keep in the room's fridge when we travel. But for the most part, we don't get burns any more. We all have sun hats and the kids wear rash-guard styled swimsuits, and that seems to prevent those few burns that sunscreen wasn't enough to protect against.

What kind of sun hats do you use?
TIA

Just reapply a high SPF, sweatproof sunscreen frequently in the parks. It's much more convenient to carry around sunscreen than to be burnt to a crisp and in pain.

I have a very fair-skinned husband and children of Scottish heritage, and we manage to keep them burn-free on every trip to WDW.

If you do happen to get burned, however, a good soak in a tub of very hot water with some baking soda sprinkled in helps draw out the heat. Make the water as hot as you can stand. It's no fun getting into the tub, but you'll feel a lot better when you get out.

My Grandma applied vinegar to one of the worst sunburns I have ever had. Now when I travel and know I will be in the sun I pack it in one of the cheap plastic bottles then put that in a zip lock bag.

I would like to post a warning against the sleeping in the bathtub suggestion. Speaking from family experience, even an adult can drown in a bathtub without realizing what's happening.

I didn't say sleep in the bathtub... I said STEEP in the bathtub... with the teabags...

I have heard that you can steep (haha literally!!) in a cool bathtub with green tea (like 3 bags) and that helps, and I've also heard that cucumbers help- you put sliced cucumbers on your skin until they get warm, and then put fresh ones on. Aloe (FROM THE FRIDGE... aahhhh) is my favorite, though.

I do not endorse sleeping in bathtubs....

Back int he day - when we all called it "suntan lotion" and laid in the sun for hours and hours - I used vinegar to take the sting and redness out of bad sunburns - it really worked!

Nowadays, my DD looks at me weird when I call her sunscreen "suntan lotion" - talk about the difference in a generation. DD is also a fair-skinned little blonde who burns very easily, so we lather on 50 SPF throughout the day and she has a 50 SPF long-sleeved swim shirt and shorts. We keep aloe on hand for her and it works well.

Solarcaine

Got sunburned in Disney years ago, and auntie picked some up at the gift shop. To this day I still keep it in the house just in case. It comes as an aerosol spray.

Burnjel Plus. Absolutely the best stuff I've ever used, for sunburn or any other kind of burn.

That said, you really should try hard to get a handle on prevention. Sunburn damage is CUMULATIVE -- every burn you have had in your lifetime makes you that much more susceptible to skin cancer. If you haven't tried the aerosol sprays please do -- they really make frequent application easy. They are more expensive because they don't go very far, but I figure the best sunscreen is the one that you will actually USE.

Our first trip to WDW in Sept. for FD,DH and I are on:cloud9:,even with sunblock we will probably get too much sun, searching for best remedies. Thanks in advance.

Do all that you can NOT to get a burn, it's so bad for you! Put on a good water resistant sunblock and get a travel size sunblock stick to keep in your bag for touch ups. Wear hats and seek out the shade when taking a break.

I haven't had a burn in over 15 years (since I found out I have lupus),I've been to WDW 8 times and never avoided being outside. Just used the hat/sunblock/shade strategy.

Aloe, Noxema, Solarcain are all good soothers. They feel BEST if you refrigerate them.
