looking to stock a new home bar.
DH mostly drinks wine (or killians), but we want a good variety of stuff for guests, if needed.

trying to decide where to buy the stuff. within an hours drive we have a trader Joes, sams club, couple of beverage stores /state stores ,, but nothing on the scale as I have seen in orlando.

I have yet to go to the trader joes to check it out.

so what store would have a great selection & pricing? & if YOU have a home bar what do you stock it with?

Everywhere is different: here in Minn I just watch the weekly ads and buy accordingly. Just watch for your favorites to go on sale. Also watch for the wine specials that have rebates if you buy 6 or 12 bottles... can save you $2-3 a bottle. You can get some good wines for $6-8 that way. (ok, so I'm not a finatic, just know I don't have to pay $50 a bottle to like a wine selection)

I used to work for a Beverages & More here in California, not sure if you have those there, but they tend to have good sales and a wide variety of alcohol.

If not, Trader Joes & Costco(although usually sold in much larger bottles) generally have good prices. I would buy a mid-level vodka (Russian Standard, Smirnoff), Gin (Bombay Sapphire or regular Bombay), and a scotch-whiskey(Johnnie Walker). Those three tend to be the most popular with guests, and can easily be mixed (cranberry juice, tonic, coke). Best of all, they "keep" very well.

I think you should also get a basic light rum, like Cruzan or Bacardi. Also, you'll want at least tall and short glasses to start. If you don't know a lot about bar tending, you can just put mixed drinks in the tall glasses and alcohol-only drinks (like whiskey on the rocks) in the short glasses.

You should also think about any cocktails you like. If you like Cosmopolitans, then buy stuff for that. If you like margaritas, then you'll want tequila. Etc. Mixers are trickier because they'll go bad eventually. So, I would keep a stock of sodas on hand if you drink them (tonic water, cola, 7-up). If you're going to have people over, get a few fruit juices that will make something good with the liquor you have (pineapple juice and coconut cream for pina coladas, etc.)

It will grow over time, so don't feel like you have to get everything all at once.

Costco does have good prices here, minimal selection and HUGE bottles. If you are buying gin for your friends to drink, a more expensive per oz, but smaller bottle will probably be a better bet. The Trader Joes around here doesn't have liquor, only wine, and I've never found anything there to buy.

As to stocking a bar, there are some good internet sites out there for whats basic - and what's advanced. Generally you want one whiskey, one rum (usually light), one gin, on tequila, one vodka - that should start you off. Brandy used to be a big deal in Wisconsin. With my friends, you could skip tequila. And mixers.

Well most people around here(SE Pennsylvania) swear by driving over the border to Delaware and stocking up once or twice a year, because there's no sales tax. Pretty sure it's legally frowned upon though lol

I think it'd probably be prudent to just buy slowly when you can find good deals on things at your local stores. Unless you're planning a party soon. Unfortunately here in PA, all we really have are state stores, grocery stores can't sell hard liquor, so it keeps the competition down, hence competitive pricing doesn't really exist.

I see you're in Ohio so you'll have to go to a state store for any of the higher proof/good stuff. Trader Joe's only sells wine and beer (at least the one's I've been to). I think the state sets liquor pricing (minimum at least) so there's really not a lot of fluctuation. Now, if you're going on a cruise anytime soon, the duty free prices on board are awesome! We got a 1 liter of Crown Royal for $18 while the 750ml around here runs $25! So, we got 25% more for $7 less!

In my opinion, a well stocked bar would have any of the following, in approximate order of importance:

Wine: At least one red and one white, two or more varieties of each if possible so that you can a drier and a sweeter option.

At least one (preferably 2+) beer options. For basic starters, a Budweiser or similar, and perhaps a Sam Adams variety; that covers your basic standard, and something with a bit more flavor.

For basic alcohols, you'll want a mid grade vodka (as suggested by a PP), and a whiskey, blended scotch, or bourbon. I'd also go for a white rum. I'd put gin and tequila as secondary because most "martini" drinks nowadays are vodka based anyway, and tequila is typically only used in margaritas. (But keep this in mind for later expansion)

MIXERS. This is essential. Unless you're talking about a sipping drink like a single malt or a finer tequila, you won't get many takers for the hard alcohol that don't involve some mixing. If you don't think you'll be using it frequently, the little 8oz cans of coke, sprite, and ginger ale are perfect for this, since the individual cans will keep their carbonation. You'll also probably want to have juices on hand... Orange and cranberry most commonly, pineapple somewhat less so. Having lemons and limes or at least the juices would also be good.

That's a good start. Over time, it's fun to expand a bit, for instance, buying a bottle or two at a time. I'd eventually add on a dark rum and/or spiced rum (e.g Captain morgan), perhaps add a port wine and/or a brandy/cognac option. Then, expand upon the various whiskey varietals: there's basic Tennesse whiskey (Jack Daniels), Kentucky Bourbon (Jim Beam), blended canadian (Seagrams 7 or Canadian Mist), Irish (Jameson), as well as blended (Johnnie Walker or Dewars) and single malt scotches. The last being perhaps the most diverse of all.

You may enjoy checking out some of the various types of flavored vodkas, though in my opinion I can take or leave them. Good drinks can be mixed/flavored from more generic spirits, but some people enjoy the unique flavors.

In terms of liqeurs/cordials, the first three for me would be Peach Schnapps, Kahlua, and Triple sec, because having them on hand quickly opens up a wide array of drink options. (Black and white russians, fuzzy navel, sex on the beach, among others) Then, an Irish Cream like bailey's. (Not only a great sipping drink, but also opens up things like mudslides) After that, expand over time on things you come across that you like, or that you find to be unique. Off the top of my head, a few favorites I'd recommend are Amaretto, Frangelico, Sambuca, Campari, perhaps your favorite flavor of schnapps for something different. Then there's all of the "Creme de" types of liqueurs, mostly with only limited usage, but you may find some favorite flavors.

Okay, that's a long-enough winded list of suggestions :)

yea, when we drive home from a cruise we usually pick up some stuff, in fact most of our stock is from cruises far back as 15 years. I had to weigh the P-I-A of carry ing bottles home, if it was owrth the savings :confused3
no cruises in the near future :sad2:

thanks for the info on the state stores, guess I am stuck with them.
went to one yesterday,, they only take cash!
