I know that we'll be getting a Dsi for our son for Christmas and I'm trying to figure out what kind of deal i should be looking for. I plan to buy a new one, so Game Stop used deals aren't under consideration. Amazon lists them for $149.99 with free shipping, s I'm thinking I can hope for something a little cheaper as Christmas approaches. Any idea what my target price should be? ToysRUs usually runs some good deals on things, but I havent' paid attention to the DS prices before. I'd love an idea of what to expect to pay for this item so i can plan my Christmas budget accordingly! Any thoughts?

I just got one for my daughter from WM. The price was $189 but you got your choice of colored DS, 2 games which retailed for $30/piece, then an accessory kit that had case, charger, game covers, earplugs, etc. I thought this was a pretty good deal.

I don't know about DSi, but you know 3DS is supposed to be coming out soon, right? The 3DS is supposed to play older DS games plus the new 3D ones.

In two days it sounds like, Nintendo is going to release a price point and a launch date, but speculation is saying some time March/April of next year.

It will be pricier to buy for sure, but is your son the type that will want the new one eventually anyway? If so, and he is old enough you could give him an IOU for Christmas, I would suggest just holding out and getting the 3DS rather than buying something that will only be new for about four more months.

I know that one is coming out. Too bad my kid is 5 and his birthday is in February! He really wants one for Christmas, but I totally see your point about wiating for the 3DS. But, since that will be a first generation thing, maybe I'm OK with waiting a couple of years to upgrade him to that and sticking with the Dsi for this year. Or maybe they'll have good deals on the Dsi for Christmas since people will b waiting for the 3DS instead. Interesting tidbit about the price point coming out in a few days, I hadn't heard that! Thanks!

No problem! Nintendo's first gen hardware has never been anything but perfect for me, but there is a chance they might make a slightly improved unit of some kind after a year or so you could upgrade to.

Also, for possibly cheaper, unless he totally wants the camera and the online DsiWare, nothing wrong with just getting him a DS Lite. It will be cheaper since it's the second-gen DS. More money saved in case you do want to upgrade him later. I personally never bothered with the DSi, as I didn't see the need to be able to buy more games online or take pictures of my friends. The only reason I have a DS Lite over my original DS is because I played it solid for many years and it started to wear the battery and buttons out...:goodvibes

But yeah, whatever you think is best since he's only five. You can't very well explain the concepts of launch dates and price differences to a five-year-old.

"The elves are having a hard time this year making that toy so Santa is giving you an IOU, okay?" :lmao:

Well, he already has access to my DS Lite, and since he's now playing it a lot more, I want to get him his own system! ;) And, he likes the camera feature on the DSi (he has seen friends use it), so I guess I'll get him the one he wants and hope he isn't begging for the 3DS in March! And, i guess I could always sell the Dsi if he wants to upgrade some day.

Ah, well to keep him off of yours is an entirely different matter... ;)

Sounds like you have it worked out fine, then. Good luck!

I was gonna say dell.com too. I got my kids there last year. I think they had a good sale before Thanksgiving.

The cheapest I've seen is $129 at dell.com.

I'm not sure if they will get any cheaper than that.

I'm waiting for the blue one to go to $129 and then I'll probably buy it. I'm also looking for one for Christmas, but my DD wants a blue one.

If your son doesn't care about the color, I'd grab the white one at Dell.com right now for $129.

I got them at Target on Black Friday last year. They had 2 different options, however they both came preloaded with 5 games. The price was $149. They also had a $30 gift card and if you spent over $100 in the electronic dept you got an additional $10 card. I split my order and got all the gift cards.

Dell often has them online or in their flyer in the Sunday paper for $129.99.
